Friday’s Fave Five

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details, and you can visit Susanne to see the list of others’ favorites or to join in.

1. A bonus! My husband received a bonus from his job and distributed a portion to all the family.

2. An excuse! I received notice this week that I am excused from jury duty! I thought for sure I’d have to get something signed from the doctor, but they didn’t ask for that. I am relieved!

3. My mother’s ring. I told about more about this here, but I found out my sister had sent my mom’s “mother’s ring” in a previous package, which I thought I had lost because I hadn’t seen it in the package, and I was looking everywhere the package had been to see if maybe it had dropped behind or under something. Then I found out my husband had taken it out to surprise me with it later and had it in his closet. I felt much like the woman who found her lost coin!

4. Seeing Jesse coach and referee. Every year our school has an elementary basketball tournament: they take the kids who want to play, divide them up into teams, and have volunteers from the JV and Varsity basketball teams coach them. Jesse volunteered, thinking he’d be helping a Varsity guy — but he was given his own team, I think mainly because of a lack of volunteers. Plus he refereed another game. It’s always neat to see your teen-ager begin to take responsibilities and leadership roles and handle them well. It’s not the first time I’ve noticed that he seems to work well with younger kids, and I wonder if the Lord might have something along those lines in his future.

5. Jeremy cooking dinner. I’ve mentioned this before — my oldest has taken an interest in cooking and occasionally will make lunch or dinner, and it’s always nice. But this week I have a lot on the schedule, especially in the next few days. I have the ladies’ newsletter due this week and wanted to get it done early. That didn’t happen, but I was able to get a great lot of it done while Jeremy made dinner last night — and he even unloaded and partially reloaded the dishwasher. So not only was it just nice to have a night almost off in the kitchen, but it was an immense help this particular time. Oh, he made jambalaya, by the way. It was good! I hadn’t had that in years.

Mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Just the right amount of chocolate to satisfy a little craving or to finish off dinner.

And I don’t feel I can close this post without saying this…I mentioned yesterday how neat it is when the Lord sends just the reminder or instruction or rebuke or encouragement I need, and that happened in a special way yesterday and today. I do usually get something out of every encounter with the Bible, but there are times when it is just so incredibly apt for the very particular circumstances of the day, which is even more mind-boggling considering that I am reading a devotional book or e-mail devotional that was written or compiled years ago or following a Bible reading schedule. Somehow the Lord coordinates all of that to get the right message to the right person at the right time. Amazing!

I’ll be around to visit hopefully later on today. Happy Friday!

  1. So many things to be thankful for this week!

You are a lucky lady to have a chef around – even if it is only once in awhile.

How fun for your hubby to be able to share his bonus!

  2. LOL! I use candy kisses – dark chocolate for that! Only 20 calories per! I wonder how much is in a little reeses? I like THEM too!

Congratulations on your hubby’s BONUS! And what a sweetheart to share it with one and all! THAT is wonderful!

Congratulations on your excuse! My son told me that HE has been called for jury duty and I was so jealous I could hardly stand it! He laughed at me! He’s not dreading it… but he’s not looking forward to it either… not like I would!

Good for Jesse! I agree … it is fun to watch our kids grow and take on “adult” responsibilities. Especially if they do it well! I used to go and watch Mathew REF soccer just the same as I went to watch him PLAY! I enjoyed it either way!

That Jeremy is a good egg! Don’tcha hope he NEVER moves out? LOL!

I was just thanking the Lord the other day for speaking so clearly to me through my reading. And it doesn’t ALWAYS come from the Bible – sometimes it IS in those devotionals – or even other Christian books. I’m still enjoying Adoniram Judson by the way! I’m about 2/3 the way through. Nancy has just returned from America, and living up north is NOT what they hoped it would be… And I must go pedal to find out what happens next!

  3. It’s wonderful to have a son who likes to cook, and that you’re encouraging him. You’re both so blessed. I loved your last paragraph. I, too, am constantly in awe of how the Lord speaks to me through so many channels. Now, if only I could stay quiet and listen!

  4. Okay, now I have to confess as to how WEIRD I really am. I have been called for Jury Duty four times and served in a jury three of those times. I loved the experience. I guess I’m the only one, though.

  5. Sounds like a great week for you. Don’t you just love those bonuses!
I love it when God’s word just jumps out at you and it’s so great when it’s just the right word at the right time. There are no coincidences for God’s children.
    Happy weekend.

  6. Would your eldest son like to visit the PNW for about a week. He can cook dinner a couple of nights in my gourmet kitchen and I can get caught up on all my obligations!

And as to your bonus — what other people call coincidence, we call God.

  7. WOOT!! A Bonus is always to nice. 🙂 How nice to have dinner made for you. I haven’t had that in like years. Now it makes me hungry for it. 🙂 Have a wonderful Friday 🙂

  8. WOOT to the bonus shared with the family! It’s always great to have someone cook for you and you just eat 🙂 added points if that someone is a loved one. Your mom’s ring -what a relief and a lovely surprise that must be!

  9. What a great week you have had, Barbara. Congrats to your husband on his bonus. 🙂 And the ring — I love that story! You probably already know this, I have read that the “coins” the woman lost were more like her “rings” that she had gotten for her wedding. So, I can definitely see the similarity there… 🙂 Are you going to post a picture of the ring some day?

  10. What a great week! Must have been such fun to watch your son ref the basketball game, what a neat experience! And I love the fact that your son made dinner. So nice! And yes it is amazing how God can coordinate everything to apply to our lives today and everyday…..amen!
