The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I’m loving the story, but I’m dismayed by a smattering of bad language in it, particularly taking the Lord’s name in vain. 😦 I didn’t think about that when I got it, but I should have.
Up next:
I’d really like to read Rilla of Ingleside by L. M. Montgomery to finish out the Anne series for Carrie‘s L. M. Montgomery Challenge so next year I can start on others of her writings. We’ll see how it goes!
I’m hosting the Laura Ingalls Wilder Reading Challenge in February, so naturally much of my reading will be in connection with her next month. I’ll have more to say about that on Feb. 1, the first day of the challenge. (I invite you to join us!)
I’m definitely addicted to audiobooks now. Once I finish The Help, I think next I’ll listen to Silas Marner. I’ve actually had a CD for that for years, but never got to it. I’ve often wondered about it since one character mentioned it on the Little House on the Prairie TV show a few years ago — and I think I may have seen a version of it on Wishbone when my kids used to watch that (hey, you’ve gotta take your culture where you can find it sometimes. 🙂 )

The language is why I didn’t finish The Help way back when I tried to read it. I don’t know which is harder/worse for me–reading or hearing God’s name as a curse. I’m looking forward to the LIW challenge! Oh, and Rilla is one of my favorite Anne books!
Interesting! I don’t remember the language being an issue at all in The Help! What I remember is Abilene’s prayer life, and being inspired by it.
I have not read The Help but I would like to. I did see the movie and I liked it a lot.

I have a hard time with audio books. I never listen to them when driving, its too distracting but If Jim is driving I can. But then, I find my mind wondering to other things sometimes.
About grocery shopping: I make a list of menus for 2 weeks with a few alternatives and then shop. That way, I know what I can prepare for dinner and don’t have to think about it too much. I don’t assign the meal to a certain day because I might not be in the mood for it on that day…..Jim does have to pick up milk for himself about every 3 days but at least this keeps me from going to the store and buying more than I need…..

Barbara, when you’re reading about Laura, if you can read some books by William Anderson. I heard him at a museum. He’s researched the Wilders and Ingalls for years and has some really good little booklets.

I also have one I bought years ago but only finished reading the last few years called I remember Laura–just interesting to get some well researched back story :). I liked the one about Eliza.
Great list! I loved The Help, of course and I’m also reading some Anne this month – I’m reading Anne of Ingleside right now and loving it so far.
The language was a downer for me too in “The Help.” It seems that it would be SO easy for authors to keep their books family-friendly; why don’t they???
But other than that, I loved listening (and reading) the book. The audio readers (I remember there were at least 2?) did a fantastic job.
Yay for audibooks!! I add 2 or 3 more books to my reading each month by listening.
I’d love to share Farmer Boy with my son, so maybe I’ll put it up next on our list. And that book you are reading with your son sounds really awesome.
Wishbone! I used to LOVE that show! My brother and I would watch it all the time. ha! I’d forgotten about that.
I still have an unlistened radio drama of Ben Hur which was done by Focus on the Family which I’d rather like to listen to. However, I’m not much of an audio learner so I keep thinking I should make time to read the book first.
I have a hard time with audio-anything unless it’s music. For some reason, listening to podcasts, audio books, etc. drives me crazy. I feel lazy if I just sit and listen so I have to multi-task. But then when I multi-task, I end up tuning out what I was listening to. Drives me bonkers! 😉

I think actually hearing the bad language bothers me more than reading it, and I agree it was quite a bit in The Help.
I hope you enjoy Silas Marner. I have read and listened to it and enjoyed it each time.
I hope to join you for the Wilders challenge. I picked Farmer Boy since it is on my son’s reading list. I am hoping to use this to jumpstart him on longer chapter books.
Since last month I read Boyhood & Beyond and working on Created for Work. I have really enjoyed them. Looks like I will have to check out Practical Happiness too!
