What’s On Your Nightstand: August 2013

What's On Your NightstandThe folks at 5 Minutes For Books host What’s On Your Nightstand? the fourth Tuesday of each month in which we can share about the books we have been reading and/or plan to read.

It has been a long and busy summer, but thankfully there have been pockets of time to read. Here’s what I’ve been reading since the last Nightstand post and what I plan to read next.

Since last time I have completed:

The Last Battle by C. S. Lewis for Carrie‘s Chronicles of Narnia Reading Challenge, reviewed here.

The Fruitful Wife by Hayley DiMarco, applying the fruit of the Spirit specifically to marriage, but it had so much and I felt I had only grasped a handful of it, so I’m going back through the chapters and outlining them. I hope to review it later this week or early next week.

The Hidden Art of Homemaking by Edith Schaeffer, reviewed here.

Invisible by Ginny Yttrup, reviewed here. Good!

The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck, reviewed here. Meh.

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach, reviewed here. Interesting, funny in parts, unnecessarily vulgar in a few places.

The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place, Book III: The Unseen Guest by Maryrose Wood, audiobook, not reviewed. It had all the elements I loved from Book I and Book II, with some new information about the children’s backgrounds, but it had the negative element of a seance.

I’m currently reading:

Daniel Deronda by George Eliot for Carrie’s Reading to Know Book Club for August. Enjoying it very much, but I’m going to have to step on it to finish by the end of the month!

On Distant Shores, brand new from Sarah Sundin.

Overcoming Overeating by Lisa Morrone

Next up:

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. I have been wanting to read this for a long time.

Lost and Found by Ginny Yttrup

Jennifer: An O’Malley Love Story by Dee Henderson

I hope you have had a good reading month as well!

  1. LOVE Boy in Striped Pajamas!!! I’m going to have to check out your Edith Schaeffer review. I read a book by her son a while back and thought she sounded like a really fascinating person.

  2. Do let me know what you think about The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I have never read it, but I recorded the movie on my DVR but I haven’t watched it yet. I guess I’m afraid it’ll be too sad….

  3. Loved “Boy in Striped Pajamas.” For another view of Edith Schaefer’s world read her son’s [profane] novels. They are not very positive and are certainly not complimentary, but are hilarious. Great list this month.

  4. I saw the movie Boy in the Striped Pajamas. You’ll have to let me know what you think. I looked for the Fruitful Wife at the Christian book store this morning but they didn’t have it. Is it a newer publication?

    • Hi Susanne,

I had saved this to reply to but then never did, LOL! The Fruitful Wife was published in 2012. At first I thought maybe it was from a smaller publisher and therefore maybe not in the bigger stores, but it says it was published by Crossway, so it seems like it should have been out there.

I’ve been working on my review and hope to have it up tomorrow.

      Barbara

  5. I have The Fruitful Wife sitting on my shelf waiting to be read in the next month or two.

I’ll have to check next month for your review of Sundin’s new book. I didn’t really care for her last book which makes me hesitant to read her again.

  6. Great list! I really want to read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas so that I can finally watch the movie.

I didn’t care for The Wedding Dress either.

I hope September is full of great books!
