Friday’s Fave Five

FFF delicate leavesIt’s Friday, time to look back over the blessings of the week with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story and other friends.

The first official week of fall has felt more like summer, but I’m trusting we’ll get back to those cool temperatures sooner or later. Here are some highlights of the last week.

1. A good visit with my daughter-in-law’s mother who was in town for a few days. We had them over for dinner one night and then all went to what we call “the little zoo” on Saturday and had a picnic lunch there.

2. Patient portals. Two of my doctors have these, where you can log in online and see lab results or notes from your last visit or send a message. I like being able to see the lab results, and I’d much rather write a message than say one over the phone.

3. A helpful nurse. One of my cardiologist’s nurses is just exceptionally easy to talk to, “gets” what I am saying, doesn’t brush me off like she’s in a hurry, listens and talks to me instead of sounding like she’s reading from a script, and explains things very well. I am always encouraged when I see her in the office or when she responds to a note in the Patient Portal.

4. Reese’s candy bars. My d-i-l brought me one this week. It is probably not a good thing for me that I know these are in the world now. 🙂 I found I like them much better than Reese’s cups, but for that very reason I need to avoid keeping them in the house. But it was good while it lasted!

5. The fall TV season. We don’t follow many TV shows, but I’ve enjoyed getting back into the ones we do watch with new episodes this week.

Bonus: My son and daughter-in-law came over and made dinner twice this week!

Happy Friday!

  1. Your bonus blessing made me smile. It is so fun to see you being loved on so well, Barbara.
Hurray for patient portals and nurses who listen well and explain things well. I’d rather write a note than leave a message, too.
I forgot about TV shows starting up. I am still trying to finish watching episodes from last season. It is fun to get back into a “relationship” with the characters.
Oh, man. I am behind the times. A Reece’s candy bar? YUMMMMM.
    Have a great week.

  2. Your son and daughter in law are so thoughtful. Love that they come and cook for you. Those bars would be dangerous at this old house! Hope you have a good weekend.

  3. oh i too like the patient portal…i find it so convenient!!

how awesome that your son and dil cooked dinner for you!

Reeses PBcups come on candy bar style now??? i dont eat candy bars but wow…i am guessing my oldest daughter will be looking for them! ( i do eat squares of dark chocolate though!😜 because it is good for my heart.😀

and how fun to have a picnic lunch! you had an awesome family week!

  4. Barbara, I don’t know if you remember me, but I’m sure I’ve posted comments on your blog a time or two, at least! Today I want to thank you for being consistent with your blogging – I thoroughly enjoy all your posts! You sure keep on top of the books you have to review! I write reviews on Amazon, and I hesitate to take on too many books from Amazon Vine because then I feel obligated to write a GOOD review (not positive necessarily, but well-written and complete and honest), and those take time! Hubby and I are both 64 and hubby retired two years ago, and now he will be going back to work just two days a week as an experiment. We also do childcare for our two families of grandchildren, 2-3 days a week, which keeps us quite busy.

Another thing I wanted to mention – I admire you for having your mother-in-law living in your home these past few years. That’s not an easy thing to do. I suspect you’re somewhat younger than we are, or your generations are shorter, as our parents all passed away between 2010 and 2011. There were many years before that with their declining health, doctor appts, them moving into an excellent care facility (hubby’s parents lived 2 hours away and didn’t want to move closer to us at that point). But there were visits and decisions to be made, and medical crises, etc. We did move my mom closer – she was in a nursing home relatively close to our house. She would not have moved in with us, and our house has a ton of stairs, so that was another issue. She was, however, happy to visit on holidays, but always wanted to get back after a few hours. She was able to meet 2 of her 7 great-grands before she went to heaven to be with Jesus. Those were hard years – from 2002 when they needed more intervention and more help, until they all passed away, often with hubby and I driving different directions to be with our parents on the same day. Then there was the whole life-without-them thing. And I find myself missing my mom more recently than I did shortly after she died.

Also, I’ve been praying for your health situation with the ablation, etc. SO glad you have a kind and caring nurse to communicate with. That means SO much, and I wonder if the doctors know just HOW important those little things (which aren’t little at all!) are!!

Anyway, I’ve written enough for now, but I just wanted you to know that I really enjoy your blog!!

    • Hi Soozie,

Your name does sound familiar. Thanks so much for your encouragement on so many fronts! Just about the time I feel like hardly anyone is reading, God sends me encouragement that there are people out there and He is using me in some way. 🙂 I’ve thought about reviewing more on Amazon but haven’t because of the time – I’d probably need to do a shorter version of what I do here. We’re transitioning into our 60s and my m-i-l is almost 90. It is difficult in many ways, but we don’t feel there are really any other options for her care and this is best for her at this point. She’s bedridden, doesn’t speak, and seems gradually less responsive to us. We’re just trying to keep her comfortable until God takes her home. Thank you for your prayers for my health. This week I am transitioning to a new medicine and have to go off the old one for 5 days first, which made me concerned that I might have more afib episodes in the meantime, but so far everything has gone well. Thanks again for your kind words!

  5. If you feel inclined I would appreciate a post about the TV shows you all enjoy. I don’t have cable, but get all major networks and PBS on the antenna. I don’t take the newspaper or TV Guide, so word of mouth is how I learn about enjoyable programming. Blogs are also a great source for new products, family movies, etc.

    • Hi Mary. A couple I enjoy are NCIs (just the main one – have not watched much of the spin-off in New Orleans) and Designated Survivor (about a low-level cabinet member who is suddenly left in charge when the White House is bombed during the presdient’s speech). We watch America’s Got Talent in the summer, but you do have to be careful with some of the acts. We record shows with a Tivo and so can fast-forward through anything we don’t want to see. We just started watching The Brave and so far it’s good and clean – I hope it stays that way (some degree of violence because it’s a special ops team who rescues Americans on foreign soil in tricky situations). This one isn’t on yet this year, but last year we really enjoyed a show called Timeless about a team that travels through time to thwart a bad guy who is traveling through time and altering history, but in their encounters with him they begin to wonder if he’s really the bad guy after all. I am looking forward to this one coming back on.

  6. A good nurse is a true blessing indeed. So glad you have at your doctors. Those patient portals sound great. Wish we had them here. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. I don’t dare try those Reese’s.

  7. I’m happy to see our favorite shows resume, too. Such a treat!

My doctor uses a patient portal and, like you, I’m happier writing emails than having to talk on the phone. It’s nice that the office nurse keeps the information up to date and responds promptly to my questions.

I probably didn’t need to learn about those candy bars;)

  8. You are lucky with your DIL’s parents, my DIL’s parents are divorced and they are not so interested in a good relationship. Sad. My eyes have healed well and what a difference to before !!!
