Friday’s Fave Five

It hardly seems like it is time for another Friday. They’re coming around fast these days. That makes it a good time to stop and reflect on the blessings of the week with Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story.

1. Turkey bone soup is traditionally the last thing we do with the Thanksgiving turkey. We had all the family over last Saturday to partake.

2. A light cooking week. An overextended shopping outing (one whole hour in W-Mart’s pick-up section waiting for my online order!) led to bringing home Wendy’s for dinner Friday night. We got Panda Express after church on Sunday. Then Mittu came over to make “Taco Tuesday.” Jim had said he’d be home late Wednesday, so I planned to just make frozen pizza. Then he ended getting home at the usual time–but I decided to stick with the pizza. Jason and Mittu asked us to watch Timothy tonight (Thursday) and offered to bring over dinner as well.

3. Online manuals. I was (strongly) encouraged by my dentist to use my WaterPik. I hadn’t in a long time–and it still had water in it. I wanted to clean it thoroughly before using it again and tried to find the manual to see what cleaning items I could and couldn’t use on it. I found the original box, but the manual wasn’t inside it or any of the bathroom drawers. I looked online and voila–detailed instructions for cleaning my model and a link to the manual.

4. A routine cardiologist’s visit. I am thankful for stability in that department and pray it continues.

5. When old blessings bless again. A few years ago, my pastor’s wife gave me a “writer’s survival kit” when I came home from my first writer’s conference. I was looking for something in one of my desk cabinets this week and rediscovered it. I had taken out some of the things, like the candy, but kept the notes with the rest. It was fun to look at them all again and remember her thoughtfulness. One of the items was a small Christmas puzzle, and Timothy and I put that together the other night while his mom was making tacos.

Bonus: Wrapping presents. I try to do several at a time and got the first batch done last Saturday. It’s fun when the kids come over and mosey to the Christmas tree to investigate. 🙂 A few more gifts have arrived this week, so I hope to have another wrapping session this Saturday.

Another bonus: I’m reading Hannah Anderson’s Heaven and Nature Sings: 25 Advent Reflections to Bring Joy to the World this month, and it is wonderful so far.

I didn’t quite get everything done I wanted to this week–like finishing my Christmas letter and getting Christmas cards addressed. But here’s hoping I’ll be able to finish that this weekend.

I hope your Christmas preparations are going well!

  1. What a great week of special blessings. not having to cook some evenings is a huge bonus this time of year I always think.

I love that you can watch your grandson, do a cute puzzle together and have your dil cook!

My dentist recently mentioned going back to my water pik as well!! (because getting under my bridge is hard with floss…even the kind that glides under but apparently a pik will do a better job). I just cleaned out mine with super hot water and a tiny bit of rubbing alchohol. Yikes maybe i better check online! thanks for the tip!

I too have all of the gifts wrapped although only the ones for extended family are under the tree. My oldest girl came over last night and said where’s all of our gifts? hahah I said hiding in your old bedroom! I’ll get a couple more in the mail this week and will wrap those sometime next week an then my shopping is complete. We are keeping it to just a few things per person this year.

    Happy weekend!

  2. Yay for a good report at the cardiologist’s! I had to smile at the WaterPik reference. I recently got a “good” electric toothbrush which the dentist recommended. I had used a battery one, but WOW this one is much more intense! My husband was told to get a Water Pik, which he now has. That took me right back to my grandparents’. I remember as a child wondering what on earth that thing was! I expect soon I’ll be referred for one too. I hear you with the week going quickly. I put on a serum and moisturizer each morning, and a few times this week as I did that I thought how it certainly didn’t seem like a whole day since I had done it before. Happy weekend to you!

  3. I am so thankful for online manuals. I’d be lost without them. I’ve never been to a Panda Express. Maybe that needs to be one of our lunches some time! I’m so glad to hear about your good cardiology report. What a blessing to share so many times with Jason and Mittu and Timothy! Taco Tuesday sounds pretty good! Have a blessed weekend.
P.S. You are a writer! You just need others to appreciate it!

  4. I love reading how you spend so much time with Timothy. And doing the puzzle with him was a fun treat.
No cook dinner after a long day is a treat too.
A good report from the cardiologist is truly something to be thankful for.
    Have a good weekend!

  5. It sounds like you are on top of things in the Christmas department. The report from you cardiologist is something to be grateful for indeed. Glad to hear it. How fun that you and Timothy find so many things to enjoy together.

  6. Your extra bonus (completion of Christmas letter, etc.) has me nervous about mine. With several big work deadlines, it’s been really hard to get my head in the right space for writing year-end letters! Such good (non)news from your cardiologist. May it continue.

Loving those faves that gave you back a bit more free time.

  7. I love turkey soup and always save the bones to make a big batch for the next week. I’m glad we can access manuals online now. I’ve had to look up a few this year. Good for you for getting some wrapping done!

  8. I love those light cooking weeks too. 🙂 I wouldn’t want to eat that way every week, but now and again it feels like a real treat. Glad you are getting good reports from your cardiology visits now!

Congratulations on getting some wrapping done already. I haven’t even begun but hopefully will get some accomplished this week (and hopefully finish addressing and mailing my Christmas cards too). Jeff asked me last night how many Christmas cards would be sent if men were in charge of them…I suggested maybe 1%? 🙂
