Friday’s Fave Five

We’ve had quite a warm week in the high 70s. I even had to turn on the air conditioner yesterday. We’re supposed to get down in the 30s again next week, but I’ll enjoy a respite from winter cold while I have it.

In the ups and downs of life, it’s helpful to stop and think about the good things God has graced us with each week. Otherwise, our blessings can fly by hardly noticed.

I like to pause each Friday with Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story to do just that: acknowledge and thank God for the highlights of the week.

1. My daughter-in-law’s birthday. We enjoyed celebrating her arrival in the world and in our family.

Jason made that gorgeous chocolate cheesecake for Mittu’s birthday!

2. Kidney Day. Jason and Mittu realized this week was the tenth anniversary of my husband’s surgery for kidney cancer (made easy to remember since his surgery was on Mittu’s birthday that year). They decided to surprise him with a “Kidney Day” celebration. Mittu made this adorable kidney-shaped cake as well as chicken tostadas. Jim showed his urologist a picture of the cake, and he got a kick out of it.

3. An all-clear confirmation. Jim had his annual visit with his urologist this week, and his scans and tests confirmed that he is still cancer-free. The type of kidney cancer he had doesn’t usually spread, but it can: thus the need for yearly checks. It’s always a relief to get the results of that visit. The doctor said they don’t usually follow up on it any more after 10 years, since it’s even less likely to spread after that time.

4. Breakfast biscuits. Jim had to go out early one morning for lab work while fasting and brought us some Chick-Fil-A biscuits when he came back.

5. Daffodils have started springing up!

Is there some blessing, large or small, you can give thanks for this week?

  1. Your family is so beautiful, Barbara. What a lovely snapshot. And, my word, I’ve never seen or heard of a kidney cake in my life. Here’s to more joyous celebrations that require a good slice of cake.

    Happy weekend!

  2. I love seeing daffodils out now! The Bradford Pears around my complex are beginning to bud. I hope the cold temps this coming week don’t kill them. We have had some lovely days.

I laughed when I saw the Kidney cake on Face Book and especially when it was cut. Mittu is not only thoughtful but talented. Jason looks like no slouch when it comes to baking. That cake looks amazing! Happy Birthday to Mittu!

Congratulations and thanks to God for Jim’s good medical report. I know you all are so relieved each time you get a good report.

Have a great weekend. Hey, are we on for lunch soon?

  3. Two yummy cakes and good reasons for both. Great news on your husband’s tests. I bought some daffodils to have in the house last week. They definitely brightened up the room. Have a good weekend.

  4. praise God for the cancer free report! that is some cake!! wow!
What a beautiful family pic of your son and his lovely wife and their boy who is growing up oh so fast!
I hope you enjoy the spring weather. I’m sitting here dreading the fact i have to go out in the biting cold for a chiro appt and a grocery run soon. Have been inside all week long due to flu. today is the first day i’m feeling better. I’ll be bundling up and thinking about you down there in nice spring weather with those cheery daffodils!

  5. That Mittu has been such a blessing to your family (and surely to many others as well). Yes, that cheesecake is a thing of beauty — well done, Jason! Praise God for yet another year cancer-free.

I had to smile at your spring weather while we have winter. It does feel a bit confusing, though to run the AC one week and heater the next. Enjoy your beautiful daffs!

  6. Happy birthday to Mittu! She is so lovely and obviously very loved. I love the kidney cake. 🙂 My brother-in-law had a kidney removed years ago due to cancer. He’s done so well ever since. But he’s not very good about getting his annual visits, so I’m glad to hear you say that after 10 years they aren’t typically concerned about it.

  7. Happy Birthday to Mittu!
And congratulations to Jim on his 10 years of being cancer free! Love that cake!
Love those daffodils! They may be my favorite flower.
    Have a good week!
