October’s Party
by George Cooper

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came.
The Chestnuts, Oaks and Maples,
And leaves of every name.

The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.

The Chestnuts came in yellow,
The Oaks in crimson dressed;
The lovely Misses maple
In scarlet looked their best.

All balanced to their partners,
And gaily fluttered by;
The sight was like a rainbow
New fallen from the sky.

  1. I loved this poem!! It created a clear picture in my mind and you could feel the wind and the sun hear the leaves under your feet!!

  2. Here’s the WHOLE poem:

    October’s Party by George Cooper

    October gave a party;
    The leaves by hundreds came-
    The Chestnuts, Oaks and Maples,
    And leaves of every name.
    The Sunshine spread a carpet,
    And everything was grand,
    Miss Weather led the dancing,
    Professor Wind the band.

    The Chestnuts came in yellow,
    The Oaks in crimson dressed;
    The lovely Misses Maple
    In scarlet looked their best;
    All balanced to their partners,
    And gaily fluttered by;
    The sight was like a rainbow
    New fallen from the sky.

    Then, in the rustic hollow,
    At hide-and-seek they played,
    The party closed at sundown,
    And everybody stayed.
    Professor Wind played louder;
    They flew along the ground;
    And then the party ended
    In jolly “hands around.”

  3. THIS IS THE FIRST POEM,THAT I MEMORIZED IN FIRST GRADE ,I HAVE THOUGHT OF IT MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS AND NEVER REMEMBERED WHO WROTE IT .WHAT A WONDERFUL TREAT TO FIND THE WHOLE POEM AGAIN.THANK YOU!

  4. My mother who is 89 has been saying the first two or three phrases of this song to me the last several years whenever the leaves started to fall. Recently she broke her hip, and is recuperating in an extended care unit of the hospital. Today I took her outside for the first time in over a month and she said October gave a party the leaves come one by one. So I decided I should find the entire poem if I could. So Thank you so much for having this on your web site. It made my day and hopefully it will make hers tomorrow. She said she often would here her mother say this poem in the fall, so it must be an oldie goldie. THANKS!
