Thursday Thirteen: Things you might not know about me

teapot.gif

I’ve enjoyed doing “Thursday Thirteens” for weeks now, but today I had a hard time pulling something together. I had two different ideas, but they are not coming together very well, so I put them in storage for another time. πŸ™‚ Barb over at A Chelsea Morning had the idea of posting “Thirteen Things You Might Not Know About Me” since part of this meme is to get to know other bloggers, and I thought that might be a good idea, too….so I hope she doesn’t mind if I borrow it. πŸ™‚

1) I think most anyone who has read this blog for very long knows that I am a born-again Christian, but I wanted to mention that first and foremost. πŸ™‚ I was saved when I was 17 — over 30 years ago.

2) I have been married to Jim for over 26 years and have three sons.

3) I prefer being called “Barbara” rather than “Barb.”

4) I grew up in Texas, though I don’t have a Texas accent. When I was in college and people found out I was from Texas, they’d often ask where my accent was. I was tempted to say, “Back on the ranch with my ten-gallon hat and tumbleweed.” πŸ˜€ Actually, most people I know in TX don’t sound like people think Texans sound like. πŸ™‚

5) I’ve spent most of my adult life in South Carolina and love it. I consider this “home.”

6) I was a Home Economics Education major in college, but I wish I had majored in English. For a long time I felt I had totally missed out on the Lord’s will and wasted time and money in college (though time in a good Christian college is valuable and never wasted even if you don’t “use” your major professionally) but eventually came to see maybe the Lord did have a purpose in it after all (it’s a long story).

7) I was painfully shy growing up. In group settings, if someone would try to draw me into the conversation I would almost panic. Thankfully the Lord has helped me with that over the years, but it still overcomes me sometimes.

8 ) Maybe because of the above, I’ve always felt that I expressed myself better in writing than in talking.

9) I collect Boyd’s Bear figurines and heart-shaped objects or things that have heart shapes (pink, not red) on them. I have heart-shaped bowls, serving platters, mirrors, and I have a number of heart-shaped ornaments hanging from pegs on a rack. Some of them are from different places we’ve visited.

10) I’m very hot-natured. My husband says I keep the house like a meat locker. πŸ™‚ I remind him and the boys that they can always put on more clothes to get warm — I can only take so much off to get cool!

11) I love soft, pastel colors, especially pink, blue, and sage green.

12) My favorite flowers are pink roses, white carnations, and purple hydrangeas, but I do not have a green thumb.

13) My favorite hobby has always been reading. I also enjoy writing, have just gotten into scrapbooking and photography, and used to sew, cross-stitch, stencil, and stamp. I’d love to learn how to knit or crochet some day and get back into sewing and cross-stitch — but I think I’d have trouble seeing it these days. πŸ™‚ I’d also love to learn how to do a little bit of tole-painting.

  3. It is nice to get to know you better. I too am hot-blooded. I love to crochet, but I’m not very good at it and I’d love to learn how to knit! Great list!

  4. Oh, I love Boyds Bears! We used to collect the village pieces and then they retired them. We still have them and someday I hope to get a china cabinet to display them in. I also love reading and scrapbooking.

  5. I’m glad you used my TT idea. It’s nice to get to know you better.

I’ve always prefered to be called Barb but it’s probably because when someone yelled “Barbara Ann” when I was growing, I knew I was in trouble. πŸ™‚ I’ve been Barb all my life.

I’m hot blooded and keep the house cold, too. For exactly the same reasons. Everyone but me wears layers around my house.

This is a great list. I’m glad you did it.

  6. Great list; You can always count on Barb for inspiration! Now I know you a little bit better! Thanks for stopping by my blog and reading Buddy’s list. Have a wonderful weekend and Happy TT!

  7. Great list! It was nice to get to know you a little bit. I have struggled on and off with painful shyness but luckily it has gotten a lot better over the years.

    Happy Thursday!

  8. I am from Texas (well, born in Illinois, but moved here when I was 11), and I do have a Texas accent. I TOTALLY agree with you though, that most Texans don’t speak “Texas” unless they are from extremely East or West Texas. And even then, it really depends on whether they were raised in a city or on a ranch (or “RAY-nch” as they say).

I hate shows where they use the “fake” Texas accent. It irks me to NO END when someone uses “ya’ll” incorrectly! “Ya’ll” refers to a group of people, not just ONE! (Spongebob’s Sandy is the worst at that!)

Anyway..I enjoyed your list. Nice to meet you Barbara not Barb! LOL

  9. We have a lot in common. I consider Texas home, because that’s where my Dad is, and where I spent a lot of my early adulthood. I am really hot natured too…hubby won’t always cuddle me for very long because I’m so warm! :/

  10. This is a wonderful list. I’m glad #1 was #1, if you know what I mean. :o) Thank you so much for visiting my Faith Lifts post, and for the lovely comment. I know I could learn from you if I visit your blog. :o)

  11. Great to get to know you more.

I understand you on the name thingy.

My name is Deborah but people always want to call me Debbie. I don’t mind Deb or Debs but prefer Deborah, and definitely not Debbie, though I was Debbie as a child. I usually correct people or if they ask I tell them what I prefer. πŸ˜‰

  12. Thanks for visiting. I also missed yours. Didn’t get around that much last week.

Great list. #3 caught my eye. I’m also a Barbara, but prefer my middle name of Carroll. Internet people know me as Barbara or Barb, thanks to my husband who set up our first account.

I have a cousin and her family who live in SC. Also, #13 caught my eye, since I used to take oil painting lessons. My grandchildren want to know when I’m going to start painting again. Maybe some day. It sure was enjoyable!
