Thursday Thirteen: Am I the only one who…

1. Likes to shop without help? To me the ideal sales person is one who is close by if you do need help but who doesn’t “hover” or hound you. I realize some may stay close by if they’re watching out for shoplifters. But I hate it when I have my nose in a book and someone comes by to say, “Can I help you find anything?” (Um, no, I found it, thanks.), or if I am met at every corner by someone asking to help me, or if I am trying to make a decision they really can’t help me with, or … well you get the idea. I admit, though, I’d rather have that problem than no help at all.

2. Mutes almost all commercials? I just can’t stand the noise and commotion. They’re usually louder than the show I was watching and usually obnoxious.

3. Doesn’t like slide shows on blogs or web sites? Please, don’t be offended if you use them. I can understand not wanting to take up so much space with a lot of pictures. But I hate sitting and waiting for the next picture to show up. I’d rather see them all at once and then click on the ones that I want to see more of. I’ve seen some slide shows with a “View all pictures” button, and that helps — I click on that and get a quick overview.

4. Doesn’t like instant messaging? I hate being in the middle of reading or writing or thinking and having a window pop up. It feels rude not to acknowledge it, so I just disabled it.

5. Cringes at public proposals? I’ve told my boys they’d better be pretty sure of the answer if they’re going to ask in such a way! But personally I think privacy at such a time is more meaningful. Unless someone really likes being put on the spot.

6. Doesn’t like online articles that just have a couple of paragraphs on the page and therefore take several pages? The prevailing wisdom is that Internet readers like things in short snatches, but I’d rather have the whole thing on one page than have to click over several times.

7. Doesn’t like messy hairstyles?

8. Thinks that there’s not much interesting on the summer TV schedule?

9. Doesn’t unpack my suitcase in hotels? Or even at other people’s homes? I will hang up dresses or things that need the wrinkles to fall out, but the things that stay folded I’d rather just leave in the suitcase.

10. Wishes those who have the right of way would just go ahead and take it most times? We certainly need more thoughtfulness on the roads, but sometimes some dear person is trying to be polite by letting someone else go when they have the right of way, but by the time that’s figured out and signaled and understood, it has taken much more time and effort than if the original person had just gone when they were supposed to.

11. Doesn’t like PowerPoint presentations where text comes up one letter at a time? Get on with it already.

I am sounding awfully impatient, aren’t I? I guess I’d rather use my time in better ways — or, if I am going to waste it, I want to waste it on my own terms. πŸ™‚

12. Thinks pointy-toe shoes are silly?

13. Puts soft drinks in the freezer? Not til they’re frozen solid, but just until they’re slushy. Soooo good!!

  1. I agree with some of your list.. but *love* IM’ing! I can “talk” with lots of people at one time. Have a great Thursday!

  2. I was with you all the way to number 9 –
unpacking my suitcase in an orderly fashion is the first thing I do ( compulsive little spud…)
I definitely agree on #1 and #3 – slideshows tend to lock up my machine.

  3. I’m with you on 12 of your 13 — and it’s about to be 13 out of 13, now that I’ve learned about putting soft drinks in the freezer!

  4. I hate it when a clerk hovers over me, too!! Commercials are way to loud!!
You must have been behind me at the 4 way stop sign!! The girls say , JUST go Mom!!! It makes them nuts when I do this. I haven’t been able to drive since I shattered my knee and hurt my back but I still renewed my drivers license!!
Good post! Love and hugs Grams

  5. I like ot be left alone when shopping.

    I DVR and skip commercials.

Dunno much about TV Summer. I know there is a movie coming on Lifetime I want to see. Otherwise I don’t pay it any attention.

Text one letter at a time? Annoying!!!

I don’t unpack either, and I agree on right of way.

  6. Except for Im’ing – which I can’t live without – I agree with everything else on your list. Especially those people who won’t take their turns at 4-way stops. I, personally, don’t think it’s because they’re being nice, I think it’s because they weren’t paying attention when they got there and don’t know it’s their turn.

    Happy TT!

  7. I hate clerks who want to help me, but why is it when I finally want to pay for something I can’t find anybody !!!! I also am not a fan of messy hairstyles and I don’t unpack my suitcase either though I do hang up my garment bag stuff.

    Thanks for visiting “Got Bible?”

  8. Well… I AM with you on several of these! I definitely do NOT want help when I’m shopping. Just be available if I do have a question. Since I don’t watch tv #2 & #8 do not apply. I do not like slide shows on blogs either – and I have never put one on my blog. (and won’t) I also don’t care for music playing – but I just mute it. I got rid of IM about 5 years ago. I refuse to even have an IMing program ON my computer. Helps keep the KIDS off my computer! I agree that the proposER had best be certain — it could be mighty uncomfortable if an unfavorable answer were to be given! But… I also know that for SOME couples, the publicity makes the “magic”… God did make us all different – huh? No real thoughts on 6 or 7. I definitely DO unpack my suitcase. If I’m going to be there for more than a night or two, I unpack! I DO agree with number 10. We have a 4 way stop at the end of our street – and I have found that MOST people have no idea how to treat a 4 way! It’s amazing! Cuz I KNOW it’s on the driving test!!! My computer can not OPEN Power Point… and I do wish people would quit sending them to me! LOL! I think pointy toes are OUCHY… and I can hardly even drink iced beverages anymore — too many sensitive spots in my teeth and gums! But up until a few months ago I liked my drinks the colder the better!

    That was a GREAT 13!

  9. Hey! I resemble some of those remarks. (In other words, no. You’re not the only one.)

    Good t-13!!

  10. What a great list!! I agreed with SO many.

I don’t do the soft drink thing though–not because I don’t like the idea–but because I forget and end up with a mess.

    Thanks for the smile,

    Julie

  11. I’m with you most of the way, but I think public proposals are neat. Though the man (it should be the MAN after all!) had better be sure!

I do like to put my soda cans in the freezer when I forget to put them in the fridge, but I just like to leave them in until they’re cold (afraid I’ll forget), a little slush is ok but I do want to be able to drink it. I often set the oven timer when I do this so I won’t leave it in too long! πŸ™‚

  12. I agreed with you on several, and found myself blushing over the slide shows on blogs – because I am guilty of doing that! LOL I like being able to get them all in one spot and not have to mess with arranging them and all that.

My husband absolutely HATES having someone wave him on at a 4-way stop when it’s their turn. I don’t see why, actually, but it really bugs him.

And I love IM’ing! LOL It keeps me in touch with my mom and MIL, my boys who are away this summer, and several good friends. What does annoy me about it, though, is that people pay no attention whatsoever to whether I’m actually there or not, and try to get my attention by buzzing and asking “you there?” when my name has “Idle” beside it. That means I am not on my computer, so all the buzzing in the world won’t get my attention.

We mute commercials all the time too. For the same reasons you do.

And if I’m going to be somewhere for longer than a night, I like to unpack. It comes from traveling on deputation and having to live out of a suitcase for weeks on end. I like to make where I am at the moment home.

So you and I seem to be very opposite on these types of things – but I sure do love reading your blog!

  13. This was a clever TT13 list! I so agree with plenty of these. I hat commercials too and that’s why I love my PVR (Canadian version of DVR or TiVo). Nothing like fast forwarding right through the things.
