The Booking Through Thursday question for today is:
What, in your opinion, is the definition of a “reader.” A person who indiscriminately reads everything in sight? A person who reads BOOKS? A person who reads, period, no matter what it is? … Or, more specific? Like the specific person who’s reading something you wrote?
This seems similar to this question from a few weeks ago, but I don’t think what a person reads determines whether he is a reader. To me a reader is someone who reads beyond what he has to to minimally function: he reads some genre and some amount because he wants to, for information and/or for pleasure. For some people reading for information is pleasurable and they aren’t so much interested in “stories.” But they are just as much readers who read interesting tidbits on the Internet as are those who read novels.
Booking through Thursday is a weekly meme around the subject of books. The hostess poses a question which participants answer according to their own thoughts and opinions on their own blogs, linking back to the BTT site, which can be found by clicking on the button above.

I thought the questions were similar, too. I didn’t mind, though, because this was only my second week doing BTT. I think you definately have to read for pleasure to be a “reader”.
I see what you mean, but I agree with thekoolaidmom – a reader reads for pleasure. I think maybe reading for information is a learning process, although it can be for enjoyment as well. When I think of a reader I think of a person who reads books.
I agree, it’s very true that reading for information can be pleasurable – should be, in fact. A reader doesn’t have to be reading novels or any particular genre or type of literature to be a reader.
Your definition makes sense to me… Maybe it has to do with having a hunger for knowledge or imaginative experience, and depending on sources outside yourself to find it. ? I agree that the genre read isn’t what determines whether someone is a reader.
I read just about anything… Am definitely classifying myself a reader. 😉
yes, I completely agree.
happy BTT!
I’ve always thought that a reader is a person who chooses to read books; however, you brought up the point of reading for information. I now realize that whenever we’ve purchased something new (car, appliance, etc.) I read the manual. Yep! Cover to cover! I’m a reader. : )
Oh yeah, I think it’s related. My definition is pretty general when it comes to what I think a reader is, but I think it evolved to a more interesting one haha. Cheers!
I’m with you! I read anything, but my passion is still reading books for pleasure! 🙂
Enjoying what they read is what makes someone a reader. It could be books, newspaper, articles on the internet or anything.
I agree with Nithin. Most everyone can read but I would only classify people who enjoy reading as a reader.
