Thursday Thirteen: Commercials from my childhood

Linda’s post about the Rice-a-Roni commercial the other day set off a stream of memories of commercials that were popular when I was a kid. So I thought I’d see if I could find 13 of them, and I hope this many YouTube videos doesn’t crash all of WordPress! πŸ™‚

1. No More Rice Krispies

2. Mr. Whipple: “Please don’t squeeze the Charmin”

3. Madge and Palmolive Liquid: “You’re soaking in it.”

4. He likes it! Mikey likes it!

5. Have It Your Way…at Burger King

6. The Frito Bandito

7. Is it live, or is it Memorex?

8. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking

9. Where’s the beef?

10. My bologna has a first name..

11. Oh, I’d love to be an Oscar Meyer Weiner…

12. Brylcreem: A little dab’ll do ya

13. And of course, the Rice-a-Roni jingle, the “San Francisco Treat.”

  1. Oh, that was like traveling back in time! I remember several of them. I shall now irritate my wife by singing the o-s-c-a-r song over and over!

  2. Hi Barbara,
I remember a lot of those too. A funny story about the ‘Where’s the beef’. My niece when she was a toddler had such a tiny little hiney that for her 2nd birthday we got her a cute little shorts outfit and had “where’s the beef’ printed across her bottom!
Hope your having a great week.

  3. Some of these were not a part of my childhood but of my married life. I must be much older than you. One that I remember is the comercial for Beyer Children’s Aspirin where the little girl said: “Mothers are like that, yes they are”
A pet peeve of mine is when they use the tune from some popular song and change the words. It messes with my memories.

  4. Oh how fun. Good for you for finding so many of the old commercials. I remember them too!! How our commercials have changed. Another one I sing now and again is “You wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent…Pepsodent…Pepsodent”…
    Thank you for sharing.
    Have a lovely day
    Judi

  5. How fun. I now have so many competing jingles in my head my brains may very well explode.

Gotta love Mikey, who by the way did NOT die from eating poprocks and then drinking Pepsi – a friend of mine dated him when they were in high school and he was most certainly not dead LOL.

  6. My blog is a retro Pop Culture blog so every Monday I do Retro Commercials and add some tidbit about my life that relates – It’s a baby boom ad bonanza, lol. This last Monday I posted a commercial for Lilt Home Perms, did a cartoon about my own experiences with home perms – what a trip down Memory Lane.

My TT ended up being about food because I hadn’t eaten breakfast when I wrote and posted Links to 13 of my favorite Tiny Food Recipes and free recipe cards – Tiny Food is my name for appetizers and finger foods!

    Happy TT!

  7. Great list. I remembered all of those. One of my favorites was the McDonalds commercial where the kids would ramble off all the ingredients making up a McDonalds quarterpounder. Thanks for visiting my blog.
