Friday’s Fave 5

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story has begun a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share out five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details.

1. Ibuprofen. It has been my friend this week. Bless the inventor of it!

2. Finding out that my tooth/gum/jaw ordeal wasn’t any of the bigger things I thought it might be but was just an abscess (relatively) easily fixable with antibiotics and a root canal (and ibuprofen!) Though I am not looking forward to the root canal, I am thinking of it as a means of relief. And though anything dental is not usually on my list of favorite things, I am glad we live in an age and a country where dental problems are easily diagnosed and relatively easily handled. I’ve known missionaries in third world countries who go somewhere to learn how to pull teeth while they are home on furlough because there are no dentists in their area, and they want to be able to do at least that much for villagers with tooth pain. Can you imagine?

3. A comment my husband made. I had put up a few fall decorations while he was out of town, and a day or two after he came back, he commented that he enjoyed them and it was fun to be surprised from room to room seeing what was new. As I am the only female in the house, I had thought no one else really noticed or cared much about decorations, so that was nice to hear.

4. A conversation with my mother-in-law. I’ve mentioned before she doesn’t have Alzheimer’s but does have some confusion and memory problems and enough awareness to know that she does. Once this week, after asking me about something we’ve talked about several times, she said, “I think I’ve had this conversation before…” Then yesterday she mentioned that, though she loves to read, she can’t remember what she read even the day before. I said, “Well, that means it’s always something new.” She laughed and said, “That’s the way to look at it!” I think I actually got that thought from Melli, so thanks, Mel!

5. Word games online. I love word games but my family doesn’t often play, so I was glad to discover Word Twist and Scrabble on Facebook. I think I bug my friends there a little too much with them. 🙂 But it is nice to have that outlet.

  1. It is good that your MIL recognizes her memory loss, so much different from Alzheimers.
I like word games too and would like to learn more about your source.
I’m happy that Ibuprofen is helping your pain and that you’ll soon have that taken care of.

  2. I love it when the guys notice the little decorating touches. I hope you get the relief you need with your tooth soon! Ouch..

  3. While living in the jungle, one night I found my husband in front of a mirror, wearing his hunting head lamp while injecting himself for a nerve block to the lower jaw. I called for a med evac flight the next morning.

  4. Ibuprofen is a wonderful thing!! Prayers for your dental work–I really dislike dental adventures.

It’s neat when “the guys” appreciate our work.

    Have a great weekend!

    Julie

  5. I’m so glad for IB too when I need it! If it makes you feel any better I had a root canal and it wasn’t quite as bad as what I feared it would be.

Isn’t it wonderful when they notice the little things you do and comment upon it? It makes the effort worthwhile!

  6. re one and two hope you are out of pain very soon
praying for you when you get the tooth work done

    bless your hubby

I liked playing online games too
but a facebook virus totally killed my computer (thanks to Mr Wonderful for being a computer techie he was able to give me a second hand one) so Im afraid i am steering well clear of it now 😦 miss it but so not worth it

  7. I hope you are feeling better soon— after the root canal, that is. Fortunately, you have that ibuprofen! That is a wonderful conversation that you had with your MIL. It must be really hard for her. My grandmother has dementia, but it is so severe that she doesn’t even know she is confused anymore. I guess that is a blessing for her, but it is sad for us to watch. I did my first FFF today 🙂

  8. You’re welcome! If I had a Facebook account and started playing scrabble with friends on line I would NEVER get anything done again in my life…. it would be THAT bad! I’m with ya on the Ibuprofen! (or Aleve) … I’ve had an elbow giving me trouble for weeeeeeeeks — since way before the beach… and now my left knee is swollen and hurting too! LOL! (I believe that is due to up and down the ladder… *sigh*) How SWEEEET that hubby noticed your decorations!

  9. Ibuprofen has been my companion this week, too. We were missionaries who lived at the end of the world and while I never learned to pull teeth (a health worker from a neighboring tribe came and did that–no pain killers!) I gave my first shot to my own son. Online games are great to play when you’re tired–my fav is Jewel Quest Quick Play.

  10. Ibuprofen is definitely a must for the medicine cabinet!
Hope that tooth gets better and I love that your hubby noticed the decor- cute!
I love word games also oh and Sudoku too!

    Have a great weekend!

  11. I’ve had to make friends with ibuprofen a bit here lately too! 😉 I know you’ll be so glad to get that tooth taken care of.

Love your answer to your mother-in-law. I’ll have to remember that. Maybe.

And you have not bugged me with too many games! I love them – I’ll play as often as you want!
