From the infirmary….

When I bought my cookware, there was a large pan called a Dutch oven in the set. It’s probably the least used of my pots and pans. Occasionally I’ll prepare corn on the cob in it, or a big pot of soup.

Sometimes, however, it is used in a manner for which it was not originally intended. Once when we were waxing alliterative, we came up with these appellations:

Barf Bucket

Vomit Vessel

Upchuck Urn

Retch Receptacle

Hurl Holder

Puke Pot.

Forgive me — I have all boys. They’ve rubbed off on me.

When they were sick when they were little and couldn’t always make it to the bathroom in time, we kept the pan by their beds “just in case.” I don’t know about the older boys, but Jesse, at least, still likes the security of having the pan nearby. He used it once today — the other times he made it to the bathroom.

The poor guy has had a sore throat for several days, which progressed to some coughing, which today led to nausea.

Since it seemed like an abundance of mucus was the main culprit, I gave him some Dayquil this afternoon, which actually seemed to help. He hasn’t been able to eat much but was finally able to keep some chicken and rice down for dinner. He’s still feeling really crampy, though. I’m hoping he is able to get some sleep and feel better by morning — and I’m hoping all the rest of us don’t get whatever it is.

Then Jim went to the dentist to see about a filling that seemed to have come out. I thought they were just going to look at it, see what needed to be done, and then reschedule him, but I didn’t know he had told them he wanted to go ahead and get it taken care of today. And then I thought they’d just replace the filling, but they did a root canal. So he wasn’t feeling too wonderful when the numbness wore off.

So this has been not the best start to a week — here’s hoping tomorrow is a better day!

  1. I could just see all of you sitting around the table coming up with those.
    I grew up with 5 brothers…I know!
    Too funny.
But sorry your son is so sick.

  2. Whew! What a day!!! My mom used to have a big green tupperware bowl that we used for that purpose, then she would make something in it, and I had a hard time eating it! LOL

  3. We have these pink bathtubs that they gave us at the hospital to bring home when each of the boys were born (but somehow we have 3 and only 2 boys…. go figure). I guess they were to bathe the baby in, but we already had a “baby tub” so we use them as barf tubs. Everyone has to have something, right? Hope your son and husband are feeling better. It’s miserable to be sick 😦

  4. Poor baby, to have sickness and sore mouths in the house.

I just noticed that you comment on your comments. If you ever want to respond to what I’ve said, either leave me a comment or shoot me an email. I never come back to read comments.

  5. Oh I hope whatever Jesse’s got does NOT go through your family! We had a large bowl — the BIG BIG Tupperware bowl – that we always kept by the bedside… and then one day it just disappeared. I’ve always wondered HOW a bowl that big could just disappear — and what EVER happened to it to MAKE it disappear!? LOL! So now we use the dutch oven too!

Hope EVERYONE is feeling better in your home soon! (and that NO one is feeling worse…)

  6. i have had all girls until my youngest. he has “educated” me as to the utter hilarity of bodily functions. how i have ever lived and laughed prior to this enlightenment, i know not;)

hope your boy feels better soonβ™₯

  7. I do hope today was a better day, and everyone’s on the mend.

We need full-fledged spring here — so we can open the windows and have the fresh air blow all the germs out! Still in the 40’s this week.

  8. Sounds like my life! My kids have been sick a lot already this year. I also went in for a filling and they told me I might need a root canal. Thankfully it wasn’t necessary after all! Hang in there. Wish I could tell you in gets better! πŸ™‚

  10. LOL I’m dying laughing here! Isn’t it great growing up with your boys? Daniel and I have done so many crazy things through the years, too!
We have a gold plastic bucket that I have had for decades that we use for barfing. And then guess who gets to clean it out? :-/
