Booking Through Thursday: Discuss!

btt button I haven’t done a Booking Through Thursday for a while, but today they used one of my submitted questions:

I was wanting to try a certain author and wished I knew someone who had read her works so I could get a recommendation when it occurred to me that having a “YOU ask the question” Booking Through Thursday might be fun. Each participant could ask a question they’ve wanted to discuss with other readers. Perhaps, like me, you’d like a recommendation of a certain author’s best work, or perhaps you LOVE a certain genre or series but no one else you know does and you’d just like to discuss it with someone. Or perhaps you want to try a new genre and would like recommendations from seasoned readers.

I’ve been wanting to try something written by Agatha Christie, probably either dealing with Miss Marple or Poirot, but I am open to anything else she has written.

Do you like Agatha Christie? What do you like about her? Which of her novels would you recommend and why?

And thank you for your responses!

  1. So sorry my friend. I’m not a big fan of Agatha Christie. I don’t know why cuz I do like Mysteries. Makes no sense to me LOL

  2. You know, I don’t know why I have never read any Agatha Christie, but I do like the movies made out of her books..hmmm maybe we need a Agatha Christie challenge to get us to reading some..LOL

  3. I loved her books growing up (which is when I read them). My favorites were the Marple and Poirot books too, particularly the Marple. I read the other books, some featured a young couple of detectives whose names I cannot remember, and then there were several stand-alone books not in any series. I didn’t take to those as strongly. There is a new biography out of her which I have heard is very good.

  4. I remember reading one of hers years ago.

Recently, on a trip to the beach we listened to one of the Poirot ones on tape. I don’t believe I would have enjoyed reading it because it got a bit tedious and all of us knew he was overlooking a maid who should have been questioned and wasn’t.

  5. When I was in my 20s I read every Agatha Christie in our local library. I loved Miss Marple and Hercule Peroit. By all means, indulge!

  6. Barbara,
I’ve just geeked up and grabbed my “New Bedside, Bathtub & Armchair Companion to Agatha Christie” to help me remember titles… I read all of her books some years ago, and I loved them.

    Here are some suggestions:
    – And Then There Were None (stand-alone, classic)
    – The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (ditto)
    – N or M? (Tommy & Tuppence; I loved this one, for whatever reason)
    – The Body in the Library (Miss Marple)
    – The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercules Poirot)

Please let us know what you read, and what you think of it!

  7. My mom really enjoys reading Agatha Christie books; I find them to be enjoyable, but not over-the-top fantastic. We share the Hercules Poirot ones. I have read “Murder on the Orient Express” and “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.” “The Orient Express” might be a good one to start with. Sometimes things can be a little tedious, but they are very quick reads. They are just not as suspenseful as I thought they would be.

  8. Hi Barbara, I’ve always been curious about Agatha Christie’s mysteries dating back when I was in school, but never read it until sometime in December last year.

The only one I’ve read is The Body in the Library dealing with Miss Marple. I have another book featuring Poirot but have yet to read it.

  9. You know what? I have NEVER read Agatha Christie! And my mother LOVED her – loved EVERYthing she wrote! (that’s probably why I never read her…) But I should! Ohhhhhh perhaps when I get through this PILE next to me… Sorry – I’m of NO help! (unless my mother’s recommendation counts!)

  10. thx for the great topic 🙂

I only read Agatha’s when there’s Poirot in it…I tried reading other books by him and I find it abit boring coz I can guess who’s the bad guy is

  11. Someone already mentioned it, but I love And Then There Were None. It was originally called Ten Little Indians after a poem framed on the wall of the house the victims… I mean guests are staying at. It is a true classic with everything you could hope for in a who-done-it.

  13. I wouldn’t say there was a bad one.
Some I’ve read recently and enjoyed:
    They came to Baghdad
    N or M?
    Murder in Mesopotamia (Hercule Poirot)
Hercule Poirot’s Christmas (also pub. as: Murder for Christmas, A Holiday for Murder).
    At Bertram’s Hotel(Miss Marple)
    Death in the Air(Poirot)
