Friday’s Fave Five

FFF fall leaves 2

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details, and you can visit Susanne to see the list of others’ favorites or to join in.

1. The Lord’s compassion and patience in His correction. My earthly father wanted my good in teaching me right from wrong, but his way of discipline was harsh and authoritarian. Plus my parents were from an era in which it was thought that loving or hugging after discipline would somehow take away from the discipline. Thankfully I was taught differently before I had children. A child’s heart is often most tender right after correction, and that’s when they most want to make sure the relationship is restored and everything is okay between you. There is a particular “besetting sin” the Lord has been bringing me to conviction about, and I am just so grateful for His tender hand.

2. Jeremy and I are often home during the day but don’t often eat lunch together as we get up and eat breakfast at different times. But one night when I had a lot of leftover rice from dinner, he suggested making fried rice for lunch the next day. He went out and got shrimp and snap peas to add to the chicken and rice we had. It’s fun having a son take an interest in cooking! It was very good — we’re talking about making it for dinner for everyone else some time. I had planned to take a picture but forgot.

3. An unexpected package — though I should have expected it. Carrie at Reading to Know reviewed some Little Pink Books a while back, and, remembering how much I love pink, she e-mailed me and asked me if I’d like them. Wasn’t that thoughtful? I had forgotten in the mean time that they were coming, so it was a pleasant surprise to get her package in the mail this week.

4. A fun excursion to Tuesday Morning. It’s tucked away behind some other stores and I often forget it is there, but a sales flyer this week had some items I was interested in. They didn’t have one thing I wanted — I have been searching for a new bedspread or quilt for some time in the right colors, but nothing they had would really work. But I did pick up a few neat things, one of which was this:

Not quite sure where I will put it yet: I have a couple of ideas but usually have to think about it for a while.

5. Two unusual music videos, both fairly short:

Bach on the big piano at FAO Schwartz:

Music made with bottles and roller skates:

(If for some reason the videos aren’t showing up for you, you can find them here and here.)

Happy Friday!

  1. The videos didn’t come up for me. I’ll have to check back later.

Books arriving in the mail make me smile anytime! How sweet of Carrie to offer them to you!

I love when my kids show interest in cooking. I love when my girl who’s away at school texts me asking how to make a certain something. Does me good to know she’s eating nutritious, homemade meals. Well at least once in awhile. LOL.

  2. “The Lord’s compassion and patience in His correction.”

    AMEN!

And it took me long enough to mail that package off to you that it’s quite expected that it would have been unexpected. 😉 Glad you got them safely though!

    Have a great weekend!

  3. I just played the oversized piano board for Bookworm1 here and he declared it a, “VERY FUNNY VIDEO!”

He chuckled throughout. Thanks for the fun!

  4. My son is a really good too and he will often have ideas when he comes to our house. Since I will be ill at Thanksgiving, I am commissioning him to cook that meal this year. I am pretty sure he can do it!

  5. Mmmmmmmm fried rice. I love it. And you can do so much with it. Those pink books are so you my friend. And I love those videos. Well done. Great week and I hope you have a wonderful weekend 🙂

  6. We have a Tuesday Morning nearby, but I’ve never gone in there, even though I keep thinking, “I need to stop by and check that out.”

And thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Lord and his loving discipline. I’ll add a heartfelt “Amen.”

  7. #1 is such an insightful lesson to learn. I’m thankful for God’s gentleness with us…
It is fun to have someone get inspired for a meal other then the mom :0)
    Have a great weekend…

  8. #1 — and always remember to tell children it is their actions or their behavior you don’t care for, and not THEM. They don’t always get the difference and a child left to think he or she is bad, often does not have the reasoning capabilities to understand change is possible. What seems clear to adults, isn’t always clear to children

Through the window I often hear the mother next-door telling her daughter she is an idiot. That is the self-concept the child will grow up with and she will be very resistant to changing it because if her mother said it, it must be true — after all, no one loves her more.

I very much enjoyed the Big Piano at F.A.O. Schwartz. I have seen such demonstrations in person and they are pretty awesome.

The other guy was very talented, but in a weird sort of way. How did he ever think that stuff up?

  9. You and I must have grown up in separate homes together! Thankfully, God is merciful, and full of love!!! And gentle… yes… Amen!

Those little books are PERFECT for you! Too cute! I like the new plaque too.

I have seen the FAO Schwartz video before – but that other one! Thats crazy!

  10. My grad school son calls me and asks me for cooking advice. I love it! He’s becoming quite an accomplished cook. Oh, Tuesday Morning! Thanks for the reminder 🙂

  11. I agree wholeheartedly with #1 on discipline.
Looks like you have such a bond with your son.
    Have a great weekend, Barbara!

  12. You’re making me crve fried rice Barbara! I can so understand what you mean in #1.
This looks like a wonderful week, any week with a surprise package in the post is a good week! Loved both video’s but the one with the big piano is really amazing!!

  13. Your #1 was very touching, Barbara. So right about the necessity of loving discipline.
Daniel and I share a love of cooking, though he REALLY loves grilling out which I’m not to great at.
I’d LOOOVE to try out one of those keyboards! Wow!
Oh, and I loooove fried rice.
    Another great post, my friend!
