The Booking Through Thursday for today is one that I submitted:
Do you think any current author is of the same caliber as Dickens, Austen, Bronte, or any of the classic authors? If so, who, and why do you think so? If not, why not? What books from this era might be read 100 years from now?
I don’t have an answer for this one — which is one reason I asked the question. I guess one consideration is what defines a classic: what still speaks to people years later even though language, dress, mannerisms, culture, etc. has changed?
What do you think?
The Mysterious Benedict Society!!! I know I keep harping on it, but it really is a timeless, classic battle between good and evil. There are no pop culture references to distract (like so many books today seem to include) and I have a firm feeling that this book will be around for a long time to come!
Great question!
Those who write timeless, and are great story tellers always survive.

I agree with you difination of classic and I think those types of books will forever remain in style. Happy BTT!
The Narnia books.
Lord of the Rings, because it represents such a complete, detailed imaginative universe that sheds light on this one.
And lots of others, I’m sure, that I haven’t read… or may not like personally.
I’m not a big book reader at all. I have read Sydney Sheldon, Sue Grafton, Danielle Steele, James Patterson to name a few…I hope they live on 🙂
Well… I think Narnia is already considered “classic” isn’t it? It’s been around for quite awhile… I have a few favorite authors that I would LIKE to think are good enough – but I’m not sure that the subject matter really IS good enough. Like Thom, I LOVE James Patterson — but is he an Agatha Christie? Danielle Steele writes a great love story — but is she “classic”… I dunno. The only “current” thing I can think of that I am POSITIVE will become “classic” is the Harry Potter series. Everything else that I can think of that I have enjoyed GREATLY really are time stamped by our era.
I enjoyed your question and your response to me!
