Welcome to Friday’s Fave Five, hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, in which we can share our favorite things from the last week. This has been a wonderful exercise in looking for and appreciating the good things God blesses us with. Click on the button to learn more, then go to Susanne’s to read others’ faves and link up your own.
Here are five of my favorites from the past week:
1. Dinner For Six. This is a program our new church has for people to get to know each other. Everyone who wants to participate signs up and then someone divides them into groups of six. Within each group of six, each couple (it’s usually married couples, but not always) takes turns hosting the others over the next three months, divides the meal among them (host family does the main course, one couple brings salad and bread, another brings dessert and beverage, then they rotate each month). We had our first dinner last Saturday, and I really enjoyed it.
2. Antibiotics. Jim was about as ill as I have ever seen him the first part of this week. First we thought it was an allergic reaction to something he ate, then we thought it was flu, then we thought maybe a urinary tract infection. He went to the doctor Tuesday and he was diagnosed with a UTI. I don’t think that accounts for all the symptoms he was having, but maybe it does. But within less than a day of being on antibiotics he was starting to feel better, and he was able to go back to work Thursday.
3. Leftovers. We’ve been having more of them with just the three of us home! I usually have leftovers for lunch but haven’t been able to keep up with them all. I was trying to decide what to do for dinner last night and didn’t really feel like expending a great deal of effort, and Jim suggested just heating up leftovers. It was nice to be able to do that — we had enough for a full meal and then some. Though probably not anyone’s first choice for a meal, it is nice for the cook sometimes.
4. 9 a.m. school. Jesse’s school usually starts at 8, but this past week they started at 9 every day except today because the church the school was associated with was having a mission’s conference. I’ve never heard of a school doing that, but it’s a great idea! It’s hard to take younger ones to evening meetings and then get going the next morning. And even though mine is older and we only went to one of the evening meetings since we do not attend that church, it was still nice.
5. Hearing Jesse’s choir sing. The high school choir sang at that church’s mission’s conference Tuesday night and did a great job. I had never heard the song before.
Another favorite is something that didn’t happen. Wednesday night I was taking a pan of enchiladas out of the microwave, and I dropped it. It wasn’t hot — it just slipped. It was a glass pan, and it fell on another glass pan, skidded off the top onto another smaller glass dish and landed on the counter — and nothing broke! I was certain dinner was ruined by bits of glass, but, thankfully, everything was intact. Thank You, Lord!

Love reading your Faves each week. You were lucky to find a church where you are happy so soon….They have these groups at my daughter’s church.
I would be in favor of later mornings, too.
We usually have leftovers, too. I sent a casserole from the weekend home with my daughter yesterday. Sometimes, I freeze them, sometimes Honey Bear has them for lunch or I have them for dinner.
Mama Bear
I absolutely LOVE that Dinner For Six idea… now… I wonder where I can get me a substitute SPOUSE to play it with!? (sometimes he really DOES take the wind out of my sails…)
I’m sorry Jim was feeling so bad – and I’m glad he’s feeling better! And do not be surprised by the symptoms caused by UTIs… I have learned with Mom that they are NUMEROUS and amazing! Even for non-Alzheimer’s patients. Alzheimer’s just makes it harder to diagnose.
We do leftovers for dinner about every 3rd day or so. If we didn’t we would throw a LOT of food away!
I LOVE that Dinner for Six idea. LOVE it! What an awesome way to help people connect.
Brain is spinning….
Ooh, I love that “Dinner for Six” idea.! Let us know how it works out over the 3 months. Glad Jim is feeling better. Isn’t it amazing what antibiotics can do? Yes, leftovers can be very nice. I was looking for some for lunch today, but none.
I love your favorite of what DIDN’T happen. I could do a post of those every week. The Lord is good in many ways.
Wonderful “didn’t happen” fave. Once we had to redo an entire lunch because this pyrex plate holding a fish dish just exploded without warning, with all the food ready on the rest of the dining table.
Hurray for antibiotics. Glad Jim is feeling better.
What a lovely Dinner for Six idea. I want to suggest that to my mother who is into church meals, potlucks and dinners forever.
I love the Dinner for Six idea!! How fun and a great way to get to know each other and fellowship!
Happy FFF! Praying you have a wonderful weekend!
Dinner for 6 sounds like a wonderful idea! We should try it here! I wonder how to start such a thing?
And I know exactly what you mean about being thankful for the thing that didn’t happen! I dropped a meat loaf once. The glass dish hit the oven rack. The meatloaf flew out. The glass dish hit the floor — and, yes, it did break, but the meatloaf stayed intact on the oven rack! Not only that, the broken dish managed to contain its mess to the rug and was easily shook over the garbage and tossed in the laundry.
I’m missing FFF this week!
Your Dinner for Six group sounds wonderful, especially since you’re new to the area. What a great way to get to know people!
We joined a similar program and our church but they called it Circle 8… w/ an additional couple. Seems to me 6-8 people is the perfect small group size. Enjoy!
Sorry about Jim’s UTI… I didn’t know men could get that too. I’ve been battling the same thing this week with garlic caps and cranberry juice. Works, but a little slower than antibiotics. Glad he’s on the mend!
Well i love leftovers myself. Seems like the food gets a tad bit tastier 🙂 I’m sorry to hear about Jim but glad he is on the mend. 🙂 Thank goodness for antibiotics. 🙂 Have a great Friday 🙂
I’ve heard of others doing that Dinner for Six idea — sounds so neat. Great way to get to know people.
So glad your husband is better. And leftovers? With the baby in college, my freezer is full and we do a lot of picking from it.
Have a great week ahead!
Wow, your baking dishes episode is definitely note worthy.
I like your getting to know each other meals – sounds really fun! 🙂
Hope your husband gets to feeling better soon.
Blessings.
I’ve heard of other churches doing dinner for six and it sounds like a great idea.
Love your last story, something to be very thankful for indeed.
I’m glad your husband is feeling better again. Dinner for six sounds like a wonderful idea to get to know other people in your church. Nothing like sharing a good meal together!
Serving leftovers is a great idea too, nothing goes to waste this way and the cook gets a day off!
It’s a good thing that glass pan did not break, can you imagine the mess it would have caused? And the ruined food?
Have a wonderful weekend !
Love the dinner for six idea! Great way to get to know each other. 🙂 Oh and I bet your were thrilled that nothing broke when you dropped dinner! 🙂 Wow!
Glad Hubs is feeling better, I am always amazed at how quickly I feel better once on an antibiotic!
I do hope that Jim drinks some cranberry juice; it works for me.
That dinner sounds like a good idea to get to know people, especially since it’s more than just one meal.
That Dinner for Six plan sounds great! Glad you enjoyed it. I’m sorry your husband is not feeling well but happy to know he’s feeling better now.
What a great idea that dinner for six is. Sounds like lots of fun.
Glad to hear your hubby is feeling better. Those anti biotics really work when they are not overused. So glad you didn’t get burned or dinner ruined when you dropped the dish.
I know just what you mean about left overs — roomie and I sometimes do that, too, with little bites of a lot of things 😉 So glad all that glass didn’t shatter and that Jim is on the mend and you are getting to know people at your new church… Great stuff!
