Friday’s Fave Five

Welcome to Friday’s Fave Five, hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, in which we can share five of our favorite things from the last week. This has been a wonderful exercise in looking for and appreciating the good things God blesses us with. Click on the button to learn more, then go to Susanne’s to read others’ faves and link up your own.

It’s funny how the same set of hours seems to fly by faster at times. I don’t know what happened to this last week, but it is gone already! Here are a few favorites from it:

1. Eating fries out of the bag on the way home from a fast-food place. One of life’s simple pleasures. 🙂 I’m trying to cut down on fast-food fries, but I grabbed a quick lunch of a junior burger and small fries on the way home from errands this week, and I love to nibble on the fries while they’re at their prime on the way home. So good.

2. A Kindle app discovered on my TouchPad and…

3. Free Kindle books! I hadn’t known that you could download Kindle books with anything other than a Kindle. I was surprised at how effortless it was to download them. Then someone on Facebook posted a link to a list of free Kindle classic books (I would share the link, but they’re up to $1.79 now — but still a good deal, so here are some inexpensive Kindle classics if you’re interested). I tried reading one on the Touchpad while using the treadmill this week, and it all worked together just fine.

4. Clearance sale. I had to stop in the Christian book store this week and found they had marked a lot of books on clearance for $5 to 5.99. Like I need to add more books to my pile…but I did. 🙂

5. Being able to share prayer requests electronically. My 20-year-old nephew had a freak accident yesterday — a ring he was wearing caught on something as he was getting out of a truck and severely tore his middle finger, resulting in its amputation down past the knuckle. From the time he was in the ER and then throughout the afternoon, my sister was able to share updates and prayer requests, which we then passed on to our friends on Facebook and also to an e-mail prayer chain our ladies at church have. Knowing that you can have prayer support in just seconds is a tremendous blessing. The last I heard, he was to go home last night with pain medications. If you feel led, I’d appreciate your prayers for him and also for my sister as she is in another state — it is so hard to have your children go through these things, but especially when you can’t be there.

Except for my nephew’s accident, it has been a good week. I hope yours was the same. I am thankful for God’s grace every week, whether they seem “good” or “bad” at the time.

  1. I love fries fresh out of the bag too. And free and cheap books–so hard to resist. I understand that. 🙂

That’s sad about your nephew’s finger. I am praying for him and your sister now…

  2. I have a kindle and I love it. I recently downloaded a book, American Woman’s Home. It was free and I am enjoying it. I’ve downloaded quite a few free ones and some for $.99.
Sorry to hear about your Nephew. I’ve known of this to happen so many times. My husband doesn’t wear a wedding ring and he hasn’t for many years for this reason. Most manufacturing plants forbid it for safety reasons. It doesn’t make him any less married. One of his childhood friends lost 2 fingers unloading cattle from a trailer.
If I want a meal from a fast food place, I order the child’s. Still a lot of calories and cholesterol but less than the super size.
    Have a good weekend,
    Mama Bear

  3. We’ve really utilized the electronic world to get prayer requests out there. It is a blessing. So sorry your nephew had to end up losing some of his finger. Boy can I identify with your #1! Eating fries out of the bag is such a great taste treat!

  4. I love that the Lord can make use of everything — even texting — for His purpose. I hope your nephew heals quickly.

Fries hot out of the bag — I can’t resist. That’s why I always get a large order so there are some left for home:)

    Books on clearance — whoohoo!

  5. Oh wow. That would be hideously awful to go through as a mother. Will pray for him.

Laughing about adding books to your stack. Every so often I have the fleeting thought that I should try A Year Without Buying Books but I wonder if I could make it to January 2nd without doing so. Or if I’d be spending scads of money on December 31st buying all the books I want so that I can actually fulfill that kind of a promise. Hmm.

  6. Oh, my — your poor nephew. And your poor sister, being away from him. I’ll be praying. You sound like me and books — drawn to them like a moth to a flame!

    Have a great week ahead!

  7. Kindles are not or not at all popular here and that’s probably because there are not enough books in French on the market. When I asked in a shop here if they had a Kindle, the young guy didn’t even know ebooks and readers !! I the old grandma had to tell him. Was a pleasure for me !
Sorry about your nephews accident it’s sad to loose a finger. In some way he was lucky that it was the middle finger.

  8. Thomas Jefferson’s quote “I cannot live without books” came to mind when I read about your book-buying adventure. 🙂

So sorry to hear about your nephew.

  9. Hot french fries right out of the bag are the best! We use the kindle apps as well, but I still like my paper-books, don’t know if I will ever prefer anything else!

  10. So sorry that happened to your nephew. And I agree it’s so nice to be able to connect and get immediate prayer in an emergency! Praying he will recuperate quickly with little to no pain.

I love when books go on clearance. I’ve found some great reads that way. I haven’t as yet been tempted to read books electronically, so a deal on the print books is always welcome!

And now I am craving fries! :v)

  11. So sorry to hear of your nephew’s accident. Must be very difficult for his mom. Isn’t it great how you can be in touch immediatley with people you love but are far away?

Books on sale….I’ve found some of my favorite authors by purchasing a book by an ‘unknown’ off the sale table. Of course, I’ve also ended up with stacks of books to be read because of sale tables. (a happy problem)

  12. I love my Kindle (bd pressie) and I love that the classics are free. I am making my way down the list of classic books that I haven’t read. The last book I read (in honor of the Fall season) was The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

I keep forbidding myself to buy more books, but then Amazon one click or a book clearance gets my uninhibited side to do the shopping. I’d like to think I could go a whole year without buying a book, but then I am sure I’d justify shopping by saying “I need this for work.”

Prayed for your nephew and family. What a scary, tough time.

  13. I know just what you mean about fresh fries 🙂 Free books? Cool! Almost-free books? Cool, too! Praying for uncomplicated healing for your nephew.
