Friday’s Fave Five

Welcome to Friday’s Fave Five, hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, in which we can share five of our favorite things from the last week. This has been a wonderful exercise in looking for and appreciating the good things God blesses us with. It’s Friday! Again! What a blessing that it comes every week! 😀 Here are a few favorite particulars from the last week:

1. A night out with hubby. Last Friday I took Jesse up to the church for an overnight youth activity and then met Jim where he works for an annual antique festival in the area. The little town where he works has a short street that is mostly antique shops, and during this weekend they all host sales, have street vendors that sell food, and live music. I’m not so much into antiques — I don’t know enough about them to know what’s valuable — but I like a vintage-y look to things. And a lot of the wares weren’t truly antique, but there was some nice stuff at good prices. Then when we went back to his workplace to pick up his car, he took me on a tour of his area, which I had never seen before. It was nice to see where he spends his days. Then we ate at a restaurant near there which we frequented a lot on our house-hunting trips. It was altogether a very pleasant evening!

1a. Finding pink rosy fabrics. It’s hard to find fabric with truly pink roses these days: most of them are either too red or peachy. But one of the stores we went to had some older fabrics with just the right shade of pink roses. I have a project in mind…if it all works out, I’ll let you know!

2. Soup nights. Last night was cool and rainy, the perfect weather for a pot of vegetable beef soup (only I use ground turkey) and cornbread muffins.

3. Applesauce spice cake. A nice flavor — it tasted a little like zucchini bread to me — and only 90 calories. I added a little glaze, so that upped the calories a bit. And it only makes a 9 x 9 pan (or 8 or 9″ round, if preferred), so there wasn’t a whole 9 x 13 panful of it to tempt me. Unfortunately neither Jim nor Jesse liked it — Jesse wouldn’t even try it, and Jim, because of the name, thought it would taste like apples and was disappointed it didn’t. I should have just called it a spice cake.

4. Seeing a son display God’s wisdom. My youngest son had a classmate confide some serious issues to him, and I was blessed and a little amazed to hear how he handled it and what he told her. He did end up needing to share it with the principal for safety reasons, but the other person didn’t take offense. I can’t disclose the situation, but this girl needs a lot of prayer.

5. My nephew’s hand healing well. I mentioned last week my nephew having an accident resulting in the amputation of his middle finger. He posted a photo, and I thought it looked amazing for only a week after surgery. I hope this won’t make anyone squeamish:

He was joking about giving high fours instead of high fives, so he seems in pretty good spirits about it. The doctor said he should be able to use it normally — but I imagine some tasks might take a little getting used to. Thanks for praying!

When I first started thinking about the Fave Fives for this week, I only had a couple in mind. But then several others came to mind — that is the best part of this meme. There are all sorts of blessings we’d miss due to not taking the time to think about them. It’s a good thing to revisit the week and thank the Lord for the good things He has scattered through the days.

  1. Your date night with Jim sounds so fun. I’m not into antiques either, but Jeff and his family are.

What a blessing that your son acted in a godly way to help his friend. Praying for her, and thanking God for him!

So glad you nephew is recuperating well, and with such a good attitude. It did make me squirm a little to see the picture. ha. But mainly because of the thought of losing a finger, more than the picture itself.

  2. I always think of you when I see pink roses. =)

Ok, I confess I had opened your post earlier when I was eating my breakfast, was surprised at the hand picture, and had to wait until I was done eating. (But now that I’m back it doesn’t look bad at all! I was just thinking about your story from last week and wasn’t ready for that! =D Glad he is doing so well and is in good spirits. That’ll definitely make for some good jokes and interesting stories. I’m glad he seems to have such a good sense of humor and good perspective on it! Glad for the doctor’s report as well. High four to him — right back! =)

  3. Wow that is amazing healing. Glad he is in good spirits. Wonderful faves this week Barbara. It’s great to see our kids thrive in their faith. I’m glad you had a nice date with your hubby. Have a great weekend.

  4. Just doing this meme makes us remember more and more blessings! It’s one of the reasons I try to be faithful on Fridays.

Your evening outing sounds like it had just enough activity and the right amount of quietness.

I’m glad your son’s friend found him to confide in and that the principal can truly help in the situation.

  5. I love little outings with my hubby too – so glad you and Jim had a nice evening together!

Isn’t it the most amazing, fulfilling part of parenting, watching your children using wisdom in their everyday life?!

Your nephew’s hand looks awesome so soon after surgery. I’m glad it’s healing well and that he sees to be adjusting to the loss of his finger.

  6. That photo of your nephew’s hand is amazing — like a cartoon hand. So glad it is healing so well. Your evening with your husband sounds like lots of fun exploring and just enjoying one another’s company. Soup won’t sound good for a few more weeks here (it was 87F today…. so glad you are getting some cooler weather 😉

  7. This is why I love FFF. Oh, antiques and cornbread muffins – I love those! Glad your nephew’s hand is healing. His high-four reaction is just cool.

  8. I smiled, Barbara, when I saw how you snuck in an extra fave (1a). I like rose coloured fabric too and look forward to seeing what you’ll be doing with it.

Your nephew’s hand does look good. In fact I had to look at my hand and then back at his to figure out which finger was missing. I pray for a quick recuperation and no long term problems with his hand.

Isn’t it amazing how name of recipes can influence our tastes? Just for the record, whether you call it apple sauce spice cake or just spice cake, I would’ve eaten it and loved it too. 🙂

  9. The same thing often happens to me, I think I don’t have a lot to be thankful for until I start writing them down, then I realize I have a page full!

I’m ready to start eating soup as well, I made a cream of broccoli soup recently and that was delicious.

  10. How proud of your son you must be! I will pray for the girl, and I hope her problems don’t overwhelm her.
My nursely opinion is that the wound looks like it is healing very well! No swelling and the stitches are clean and dry. Even more important, your nephew’s attitude is good and it will help him as he relearns “normal”. I will pray for him, too.
How nice that you had a night alone with your husband – and you found some rosy fabric, too!
And cake.. well, cake is always good. 🙂

  11. I always enjoy these Friday posts.
I am not into expensive antiques but I like old things and vintage things. So I really enjoy browsing these kinds of shops.
I’m glad your nephew is in good spirits about the amputation and it doesn’t look too bad. Probably will not be too noticeable on just short acquaintance.
    Blessings,
    Mama Bear

  12. What a wonderful day you had with your hubby. I’m interested to hear what project you have in mind for your pink rose flower fabric.

Good for your son on being able to handle a tough situation so well. I love when our kids are able to to do that and show maturity.

So glad your nephew is keeping in good spirits considering the injury and amputation. Praying it continues to heal so well!
