Friday’s Fave Five

Welcome to Friday’s Fave Five, hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, in which we can share five of our favorite things from the last week. This has been a wonderful exercise in looking for and appreciating the good things God blesses us with. It’s Friday! And I am looking forward to “falling back” this weekend and gaining back that lost hour from last spring. Here are a few favorites from the last week.

1. Mexican food. One of my favorite things in life. Our favorite place here had kind of dipped in quality and service the last few times we’d been there, and I was afraid it was headed downhill, but this last visit was back up to par. Plus, the next day my dear husband let me have his leftover chicken chimichanga!

2. Carving pumpkins for the first time ever. Well, I didn’t — I just watched and took pictures. 🙂 But it was a fun evening.

3. Going back to bed. I really hate to, because I feel it cuts into the most productive part of my day, but it’s nice to be able to do so occasionally when needed.

4. Newspaper column. I mentioned a few weeks ago having an opportunity to be a “community guest columnist” for our newspaper for about a year. My first column was published last Sunday!

5. A good meeting and a great advocate. Some of the staff at my mother-in-law’s assisted living facility were again saying she needed to be moved into a nursing home this week. Jim met with the director and shared his concern that the care-givers weren’t working with her as the physical therapist had shown them to, and she was very receptive. The physical therapist came in as well and testified that she was improving under his care and she was not at all to the point of needing to move yet. He has been just exceptional in working with her and advocating for her. I’m so glad God brought him to her. Jim arranged to go back over after work to show the main person saying she had to lift her how we help her stand, but then she had another obligation and wasn’t able to come. Frustrating! But we have another reprieve for a while, though we do see the handwriting on the wall and are looking into other options for when that time finally does come.

Prayer request: One of my son’s classmates is in the hospital with encephalitis (same student I mentioned here with some serious issues), and it’s pretty serious from what we understand. I’m hoping he will hear more about how she is doing at school today.

Hope you have a great weekend!

  1. Nice work on the pumpkins — the carvers and the photographer 🙂 I’m definitely with you on the Mexican food. It’s great that you have a good one near by. Congrats on your first newspaper column! Will be praying for the student with encephalitis.

  2. Congratulations on your column! That is exciting. I’m so impressed with the pumpkins. Ours are never that artistic. Mexican food is my favorite.

That is good news about your MIL. It’s a huge blessing to have staff willing to work with you.

    Prayers for your son’s classmate.

  3. Just read your column, Barbara. You’ve put into words how I’ve been feeling about the house we’re in now. We’ve lived here three years, and for me “home” is still the last house where our kids grew up. You’ve reassured me that this house will someday feel the same way.

  4. Going back to bed is something *I* would DEFINITELY count a blessing!!! =)

    (Still impressed by the pumpkin.)

And I love Mexican food! It’s our favorite around these parts. Yummy, yummy!

Praying for the classmate. That would be very scary.

  5. I love Mexican food too, even though I get basically the same thing everywhere I go (cheese enchiladas or steak quesadillas). And the salsa and chips! My favorite part. 🙂 I love the instant gratification of eating at a Mexican restaurant.

Those pumpkins were totally incredible. I was in awe when I saw them earlier this week on your blog.

And congrats again on your article. It was wonderful!

I’m glad your m-i-l’s physical therapist is such a wonderful advocate. That’s very helpful. With my mom’s assisted living facility, they allowed her to stay beyond when she should have left because we hired an extra person to come help. (But that was only because her long-term care insurance paid for it.) I continue to pray that things will keep working out well with your situation. I know it’s tough.

    Praying for your son’s classmate…

  6. Congrats on your column! How exciting!

I’m a real fan of Mexican food, too.

Hope your m-i-l’s situation and your friend with encephalitis improves!

  7. Congrats on your column! 🙂 I am doing a Snoopy dance for you…

Re: Mexican food – we haven’t found a restaurant yet we like. The last we tried out was quite horrible – it was noisy, food was not very good… 😦

  8. The pumpkins are lovely. The one with a guy’s face looks unique (to me at least), haven’t seen that among all the pictures of pumpkins I see everywhere. I’ve been having Mexican food recently and will explore another Mexican restaurant soon. Yummy cuisine. Congratulations again on your column.

  9. We really love going for Mexican food, too. Glad you got some listening ears for your MIL’s care. Those pumpkins are fabulous! Great article Barbara!

  10. Good morning, Barbara
It is a very pretty day here, the sun is shinning and it is supposed to be in the upper 60s. Jim and I are going to go to the green way near us, in a bit, and walk then eat a snack at one of the benches.
I read today’s post…and you are right, Satan does attack us about our writing whether it is on our blogs or elsewhere. My article hasn’t come out yet, however, after it was written, the current edition of the magazine was published and I read it….Right away, I began to think that my writing wasn’t as good as the work in that edition. I went back and read mine on my computer and decided it wasn’t all that bad. I have always lacked confidence in certain situations and that is where the enemy attacks me.
I read your article and enjoyed it very much, thank you for sharing it with your readers here.
    Have a blessed weekend,
    Sammie

  11. Look at your name up there in the headline! Loved your article, Barbara. Congrats!!

Those are some great pumpkins — wow!

Glad you got a reprieve. Those situations are so tough; I remember with my husband’s mom…and may be looking at the same for mine sometime soon.

    Have a great week!

  12. We haven’t had Mexican food in quite a while. Hmmm, think I’ll have to start hinting around for that!

What a blessing having that therapist for you MIL. Saying a prayer for her and for that young man in the hospital too!
