Friday’s Fave Five

Friday's Fave Five

We’re a week into October already. Leaves have started changing and falling, but we haven’t seen full autumn color yet. We should in the next week or two! Meanwhile, I am rejoicing in cool mornings and evenings. Here are a few other reasons for rejoicing this week, and sharing with Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story.

1. Being treated to dinner out with new friends. A couple at church invited us out to eat, and we enjoyed getting to know them better.

2. Care group meeting. The church we’ve been attending divides up into smaller care groups, each under an elder. We knew they had them but didn’t really know how they operated or where or with whom. But someone invited us to theirs, which meets every other week, usually in the elder’s home. It’s mainly a way to get to know each other in a smaller group setting, share prayer requests, etc. And have snacks. šŸ™‚

3. A free (sort of) car wash. Jim took my car in to be serviced, get the oil changed, etc., and was offered a free car wash. I’m sure the price was incorporated into service fee, as it seemed rather high. But that’s all the more reason to take advantage of it.

4. A good movie. Last night we watched A Million Miles Away, about Jose Hernandez, who as a child worked with his migrant parents in various fields and grew up to fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut.

5. Days at home. Though I enjoyed the social encounters over the weekend, I was very glad to spend most of the rest of the week at home with no out-of-the-ordinary outings. I’m not one who can go-go-go a lot.

I hope you’ve had a good week as well!

  1. It seems most churches have moved away from adult fellowship classes during Sunday mornings to small group gatherings during the week. Glad you were able to join one this week. Do they switch up the group members from time to time?

You mentioned that movie in your September wrap-up and I’d already forgotten to tell my mom about it! Love the premise.

A balanced week overall, then, with visits and at-homes šŸ™‚ Happy weekend, friend.

    • This church has an adult Sunday School, but they replaced heir Sunday evening services with smaller care groups a couple of times a month. I haven’t heard anything about switching up members, but I think that would be good to do once or twice a year to get to know other people.

I think Susanne was the one who mentioned that movie last week. We had seen it listed when we opened but hadn’t thought much about it til she told about it. It was interesting not only because of Hernandez’s journey from migrant farm worker to astronaut, but the first part of the movie gave insight to that lifestyle of traveling place to place to work and the kids attending different schools along the way.

  2. We just got home…like an hour ago…from a trip for a few days in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks but tonight I wil lbe thankful for my own bed. The Inn where we stayed had VERY uncomfortable beds!!

When we get our car serviced at the dealer they always include the car wash. Not so at our oil change place though unless we go to the dealer.
Glad you had the full service!!

I LOVE being in a small group study and leading one. Actually I’m co-leading one with my husband this semester and leading a fitness/walking group on 2 Sat AMS a month until June. It’s fun and a blessing.
I’m glad you found a group to join!

I just added that movie to our Netflix list before we went away. We might watch it tonight.
I hope you have a good weekend.

  3. Sounds like your church has some good groups. So glad that you are making some new friends. Have a great weekend! See you again soon!

  4. Yay for a nice dinner with new church friends. A while back, we were invited to dinner by a church family. Honestly I was kind of stressed — we hardly knew them, etc. But it ended up (as those things usually do) going well and being very pleasant. Yay too for some relatively empty days on the calendar. I love those!

    • Thank you for helping me know I am not alone in feeling stressed over meeting with people we don’t know well. Like you said, it usually works out nicely. I just wish I could turn off the butterflies.

  5. How nice to be invited for dinner and make new friends. I used to always be on the go but I find it now exhausts me and I need good solid home time. I loved that movie and it was on my faves list last week.
