Friday is here again, time to pause with Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story and count the week’s blessings. Mine are mostly simple pleasures this week.
1. A grocery delivery snafu that worked out. On Saturday, I stopped to look out the front door window, and noticed a bunch of groceries on our front porch. We hadn’t ordered any. The name on the bags wasn’t anyone we knew. I called the store, but they said we could keep them–even if they came to pick them back up, they couldn’t deliver them to the original customer after the goods had been out of the store’s hands. They said they’d send the customer a refund.
Before we brought the groceries in, though, we decided to call one neighbor who knows everyone on the next three streets to see if she knew the name on the bags. While we were doing that, someone pulled up and said she thought the groceries were hers. She turned out to be the granddaughter of one of our neighbors. I’m glad it all worked out okay and she got her stuff without having to order them all over again.
2. Flowers. We had planted wildflowers from seeds, and they are really taking off now! It’s so pretty to see them from the kitchen window.
As they were coming up, we weren’t sure what was flower and what was weed until they started blooming. So I think some weeds are mixed in there. π I’m not sure what that tall feathery thing is.
In addition, the planters are filling out nicely. We had planted zinnias from seeds for the first time, and they’re coming up well, too, though they haven’t bloomed yet.
I’m thankful my husband faithfully keeps everything watered
3. Our first squash. We haven’t planted vegetables in many years, but my husband planted yellow squash and tomatoes this year. Both are coming along, and he brought in our first squash today (Thursday).
4. Hummingbirds. We didn’t see any even though I put the feeder out several weeks ago. I decided to make a new batch and have seen several now. The wildflowers we planted are supposed to be the kind that attracts them, so hopefully we’ll see more.
5. An Apple gift card. I’d had one for some time, but hadn’t loaded into my account so it wouldn’t get frittered away. I wish Apple and Amazon would let us adjust settings so they don’t automatically use gift cards as the first payment option. The Apple gift card can be used for iTunes, and I was able to buy a few songs this week.
How was your week?

Hummingbirds are my favorite. Your flowers are beautiful! Have a great and blessed weekend! π
I like the gardening update! Your pots are pretty — reminds me of the admonition to include a thriller, a filler, and a spiller — you’ve got them all π I think I have some of the “spiller” — creeping jenny maybe? Awesome that your wildflower seeds worked! I can’t count that number of times I’ve planted some of those and didn’t get much. I can TOTALLY relate to things coming up and not knowing whether they’re weeds or “good stuff.” My phone (which is google) lets me take a photo, then along the bottom an option is “lens” which googles what it is from the photo. Yours probably has something similar? It has helped me many times to id things … Yay to your husband too for watering! That’s a big job.
The “spiller” came back from last year, but I have forgotten what it is. We have to be careful it doesn’t take over the planter or start rooting on the ground.
My son just told me about the Google lens recently. I tried it, but it brought up a number of options and I wasn’t sure which was this plant. I have an app called Picture This which will identify plants that I take a picture of, but I didn’t think to use it while I was out there.
What a blessing that things worked out where the groceries were concerned. Your thoughtfulness of calling the neighbor saved a lot of trouble for everyone involved.
Your flowers are so pretty, Barbara! And I’m glad that you have some squash from what your husband planted. Fresh veggies are the best!
I’m like you when it comes to Amazon and the gift cards. At one time, you could change how you wanted to pay for your purchase…with gift card or not. But that’s not the way it is now. Makes me sad.
Have a wonderful weekend, Friend!
The last time I purchased something from Amazon, there was a choice of what payment to use. It was just automatically set to use gift cards first and I had to manually unclick that option and click on my credit card info. The exception was Kindle book purchases–for some reason they don’t give us the option for those. They just use the gift card balance first.
Thank you for mentioning that, Barbara. I will have to look more closely the next time that I order.
How wonderful that the grocery store story all worked out and the young lady got her food!
LOVE wildflowers but….our bunny family got to one of my pots and ate most of them!!!
Your hanging plants look gorgeous!!
YAY for gift cards!! We love Apple products here in our home……it’s a huge blessing when you have gift cards you can use.
Happy weekend!
We have a few flowers planted by the mailbox, and bunnies or something have gotten into those. That’s a little odd, since we usually see bunnies more in the back yard than the front.
What a nice surprise for that neighbor to get her groceries!
That tall feathery thing looks like it might be cosmos (not a weed). So nice your wildflowers are doing so well! I’m impressed with your zinnia success (mine have been fighting insect enemies and losing).
Your baskets look just lovely in front of your brick and above those boxwood shrubs.
Glad the grocery order got to the right place in the end. Your flowers look lovely. My garden is a total mess but it’s on my long term “to do” list which will probably involve some outside help. Have a good weekend.
Lovely flowers! Reminds me of my Grandpa who used to plant seeds in containers. He could make anything grow.
I didn’t know that Amazon was no longer giving you the option to choose payment. That’s not good.
I’m glad that the groceries ended up with the right owner.
I’m sorry for the confusion about Amazon. They do give you payment options, but it’s set to automatically use your gift card balance if there is any. I have to manually unclick that option and click on my credit card info–which I sometimes forget until it’s too late. The exception is for Kindle purchases–they seem to only be purchased with “one-click,” which uses gift card balance first and then your credit card.
Ok, that’s good. I remember being able to choose but you’re right, if you forget, you can’t change it. Oh, by the way, my China purchase never came and the company refunded me. I’ll tell you more when I see you.
I think the feathery plants might be cosmos, one of my favorites.
That was a good ending to the grocery delivery mistake. I’m glad the food ended up with the intended customer.
Have a good weekend! Willow
Your flowers are beautiful! Love the wild flower look. Glad the groceries found their owner. How fun to get hummingbirds coming to the feeders. I don’t think I’ve actually seen one in real life.
Your flowers look so beautiful in your garden ! Weeds are very much in fashion to feed the bees ! And together with other flowers they look real nice. We also have mixed flowers in our park !
Your flowers are all so beautiful! No wonder the hummingbirds are attracted to your yard. The way you photographed the wildflowers looks like a post card.
