Friday’s Fave Five

This is one of those weeks where I get to the end, sit down to write a Friday’s Fave Five post, and think, “Wait . . . what did happen this week?” 🙂 I try to keep a running list of things to mention on Friday, but failed to this week. I appreciate this weekly exercise in gratefulness with Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story. Sometimes I have to look and think a little harder, but there are always blessings to be found.

1. Internet issues fixed. We’d been having weird Internet issues for a while now. My husband replaced a part–a signal distributor, I think. But everything works fine now.

2. An updated bathroom. We’ve been in this house almost fourteen years, and the whole interior needed repainting. Jim did two bedrooms and our bathroom while he was still working, but decided to save the rest til retirement, when he could work without having to stop and start on weekends or evenings. This week he painted what we call the “guest bathroom” and replaced the flooring there. It looks so much brighter! The old walls were a yellowish kind of beige, and he’s covering them with a light grey.

I didn’t take a before picture, but here’s after:

3. Hashtags. I don’t do a lot with my Instagram account besides post a link back to my Sunday posts and some books reviews. But it always took a long time to add the appropriate hashtags. I finally did something I’ve thought about for a while: I made groups of hashtags for different posts (blog post, quotes, book reviews, Bible verses memes) in the Notes app on my phone. Now I can just copy and paste them.

4. The Olympics. I’m not terribly interested in athletics most of the time, but I do like watching some of the Olympics. We just see the NBC coverage in the evenings. As I said in my end-of-month post, I only saw the last hour of the opening ceremonies, so I missed the controversial parts. But I heard about them the next day. Though I experienced several emotions, I didn’t feel I needed to boycott watching the coverage. It’s not the athletes’ fault that the program directors did what they did.

5. Avoiding rain. I was going to run errands Tuesday afternoon, but then we were hit with thunderstorms. More were in the forecast Wednesday, but I had to get things done, so I headed out, hoping for the best. Thankfully, I only caught a few raindrops between the car and a store.

That’s my week. How was yours?

  1. I’m glad you didn’t get caught in any storms while you were out. We’ve had some significant ones around here. Last night we had continuous lightening for about 15 minutes.

I don’t think I have a way of watching the Olympics live since I don’t have cable, but I’ve caught snippets on other sources. My favorite is the summer Olympics and the gymnastics. Simone Biles has really been a thrill to watch. That lady can fly!! So many golds for the U.S. this year!

I’m glad your internet issues are fixed. As far as Instagram, I’m more of a lurker. I rarely post much but I enjoy the ones I follow.

Looking forward to lunch next week. Have a great weekend.

    • We don’t have cable any more, either, but Jim has a Fire Stick (via Amazon) through which we watch most things. Gymnastics is my favorite, too. Some of the swimming races are hard to watch after a while because they seem all the same—back and forth, etc. 🙂

      Looking forward to lunch, too!

  2. I so hope we get rain today! Very dry here, and rain keeps being predicted, but then keeps missing us. Yesterday a friend picked me up at 7:15 to help with a garage sale at her mom’s, who recently moved to a nursing home. It was a good day, but hot/humid out, and we got home at 7 p.m. I was hot and tired after that for sure! Heading out soon to help my elderly friend who will be moving to assisted living in a couple of weeks. It seems like I’m in that “season” of life currently! I love your “new” bathroom. Very bright and pretty!

    • I hope you get some rain soon! We were without for several weeks, then got a bunch this week. It’s nice to be able to help friends in situations like that. Not too many people are available during the day.

  3. Here in eastern NY we really need a couple of good rainy days as our grass is getting brittle and brown! We’ve had a couple of spotty showers the last 2 weeks but nothing to really soak the ground. We badly need it.

I LOVE your shower curtain and the walls are beautiful.

We’ve watched snippets from the Olympics each day mainly via The Today Show. I’m very sad that most people misunderstood what the opening ceremony (the controversial scene) was trying to depict. Just shows me and my family that SO MANY people do not know art history nor French culture. Sad.

I hope you have a good weekend.

    • I’ve read varying accounts of what the scene was trying to depict. Some said it was supposed to Dionysus. Some of the actors themselves were quoted as saying they were depicting the Last Supper, with the guy in blue saying he was representing Christ. Plus, from what I understand, that wasn’t the only controversy.

Hope you get some rain soon!

  4. The “what did happen this week” feeling is a bit disconcerting, isn’t it? This is why I love FFF so much 🙂

My mom admitted to me this week that she can’t stand the suspense of watching sports competitions, so she waits for the recaps/highlights 🙂

That’s very smart of you to create copy-paste groups of things you use so often! And hurray for the rain and avoiding it on your errands. Happy weekend!

  5. You had a week of blessings, Barbara. I’m so glad that your computer problems have been taken care of. I’m not very tech savvy but I have been known to get out of sorts when something doesn’t work properly.

  6. Your bathroom turned out beautifully! So new and fresh looking.

I almost never watch sports on TV, but I’ve been hooked on the Olympics in the evening. I love watching the swimmers, and the gymnasts are a close second. You didn’t miss much in the opening ceremonies, in my opinion. Personally, I found it hard to follow, although Celine Dion’s performance was stellar.

I don’t post a lot on Instagram, but I like your idea of making a list of the hashtags. I tend to use the same ones and have to recreate my list each time.

Our internet is spotty these days. Maybe Jim could come take a look?!

  7. Your bathroom looks great. Glad you got your internet issues sorted. I can imagine how frustrating that must have been. I’m more of a follower on Instagram than a poster and when I do post I hardly ever use hashtags lol. I’ve been enjoying the Olympics too. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

  8. I’m sorry I am so late commenting on FFF. It was a week here…

I think Jim has done a great job on the guest bathroom. It looks so new and fresh.

I’m glad you missed the rainstorm. We got caught in one when we were walking in our neighborhood. A neighbor was in her garage and kindly let us stand there until the worst of the storm passed.

  9. I have totally missed out on watching the Olympics this year. Just too busy with visiting family who weren’t into watching it. The bathroom looks great. I love the freshness of a new paint job. Our whole house needs doing. Tech issues always stress me out. Glad yours were sorted out.
