Friday’s Fave Five

Friday's Fave Five

This image is apt for today, as we’re predicted to get 3-6 inches of snow. That is a really big deal in our area. I’m hoping we get less than that and that the power stays on. But Jim went to the store yesterday, and we’re ready to hunker down and see what happens.

Meanwhile, I’m dwelling on things to be thankful for from the last week with Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story.

1. A steak and egg biscuit. I had to go in for some fasting lab work last Friday, and rewarded myself afterward with a steak and egg biscuit from Bojangles. I don’t care for the rest of their food, but I like their biscuits. This one was so good. It’s a little too heavy to eat very often, but it hit the spot that day. Plus I got Bo-Berry (blueberry) Biscuits to split with Jim.

2. Good lab results. These days, physicals seem to consist primarily of talking about blood chemistry. I’m thankful all my numbers were good–even my overall cholesterol as well as the good and bad kinds were within normal range.

3. Help taking down Christmas decorations. Jesse came over last Saturday to help us take down Christmas stuff, which was greatly appreciated. Plus, I’ve wanted for a long time to sort through ornaments and pull out the ones that needed repair or that we don’t really use any more. Usually there’s not time in the rush of putting up or taking down decorations. But I wanted to do that even if it meant leaving that one box out for a while. I was able to get that done (which wasn’t as involved as I thought it would be) plus reorganize some of the boxes so things fit better.

4. Sorting, organizing, and purging. I don’t know what it is about January that inspires those activities, but I was glad I was able to scratch that itch a bit. 🙂

5. Painting. Jim has been painting the hallway this week, and it looks so much brighter than the Basic Builder’s Beige that was on the walls. We were going for a very light grey, but the paint looks white, which is fine. The hallway walls didn’t take long, but it was a little tedious to take down all the family pictures and put them back up. Plus, between three bedrooms, a bathroom, two closets, and a small room housing the furnace and hot water heater, he had seven doors to paint. Those were not as fun. But they look great.

It’s hard to believe we are a third of the way through January already. How was your week?

Stay warm, friends!

  1. I think of January as purging and reorganizing, after I’ve put away the Christmas decorations. It just seems like a good time for me. Kudos to Jim for his hard work with the painting! I always find it tedious to hang things – to get them straight and even so I don’t envy you that job.

I usually head to McDonalds after fasting blood work. There is a BoJangles near me on the way home. I may try that next time.

That’s great that your labs were good. My good and bad cholesterol are always out of whack.

I’m all ready for our snow! I have nowhere to go so I can just sit and enjoy the ambience. Stay warm and safe.

  2. Sounds like a good week! Yay for good lab numbers! I too am trying to do more “sorting” as I put away (and get out) Christmas ornaments. I have so many, and I realize that some of them don’t “speak to me” as they once did. It feels good to lessen the number a bit, since each year it seems I end up with a few new ones as well. I got most of my Christmas stuff put up too, although I leave out maybe 1/3 of it that is more “winter.”

  3. It seems a lot of us are in purging mode these days. I, too, am working my way through each room in the house. I took 6 boxes to Goodwill last week! It felt so freeing.

You reminded me of another favorite this week that I neglected to list. Dan painted the ceiling in the kitchen — not an easy job with all the trimming and light fixtures. It’s great to have spouses that can do those chores, isn’t it?

Good news on the lab work!

  4. It’s kind of sad that our “physicals” these days do basically boil down to what you described…a discussion of our numbers from the blood work.

I’m glad that you and Jim had help from Jesse with taking down the Christmas decorations. That was kind of him.

I’ve been doing a bit of the purging myself. January just seems a good time to work on things a little at a time.

I do not envy Jim the job he did painting all of those doors! Wow!

Praying for you as the storm comes your way. Glad Jim made it to the store yesterday.

  5. I like to take the decorations down by myself because my husband is not much help. He kind of gets in the way. I’m glad you had good lab results. A fresh paint job is always so wonderful.

  6. Praise God for good lab results! (my annual blood work is next week and the older I get the more nervous i get so I’ve been praying for no anxiety).

Oh there’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint. How nice that Jim could do it!

I too have had the itch to purge but I’m also embracing the hygge practice this month so I’ve done just a little and will keep working on it throughout the winter.

    Happy Weekend!!

  7. Good good news on the blood work! That is certainly a fave.

Having the painting done is a blessing, for sure. And the decluttering, too.

I have most of the decorations put away now. I’m doing the same thing as you will old ornaments but I’m not started on that–dreading the mess.

Be safe in the snow! Willow

  8. Yes, that would be a big deal. Hope the region can figure out how to navigate — even one inch would paralyze our area!

Great. Now you’ve got me wondering who makes steak and biscuits around here.

I’m impressed you got so much done with the Christmas decorations. Seems others in my Buy Nothing have the same idea as unused decorations are going up for gifting.

I remember painting the hallway and dreading all the doors, too! How nice of Jim to take on the task and get it all done.

  9. Glad the lab results were good. You’re lucky having a Hubby who will take on the decorating. Mine hates DIY. We have 7 doors too in our hallway plus all the rails and spindles on the stairs. No way he’d tackle that. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

  10. My in-laws love breakfast at Bojangle’s too. I haven’t ever tried their biscuits, but I’m willing to. 🙂 We finally put away our Christmas decorations yesterday. I wish I had cleared out some of the older ornaments. But I didn’t, so they will be there again in December for me to sort through. ha. I hope you didn’t lose power during the snow storm. We actually got around 4″ of snow ourselves; so beautiful!

  11. That biscuit sounds delicious. I just had blood work done too so we’ll see what happens. My Christmas decor needs a good purge. It’s pretty smart of you to keep one box out to get that done because it is overwhelming in the throes of putting up or taking down the decor. I think in my case January inspires organizing, sorting and purging because I’m not outside as much as in the nicer weather months and I “live” in the clutter more and realize just how much “stuff” there is. Here’s hoping you don’t get too much snow.
