This first Friday of October still doesn’t quite feel or look like fall, but we’ll get there eventually. I’ve had what I call half a headache off and on this week–not severe, not incapacitating, but just enough to make me feel draggy. But–there are always blessings if we look for them. I’m sharing mine this week with Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story.
1. Lunch with family and a friend. One of Mittu’s friends from her hometown, who was one of her bridesmaids, was visiting last weekend. She came to church with them and then we had lunch at Mittu’s and Jason’s house.
2. Timothy’s first youth activity. Our church lets 6th grade kids and their parents decide whether they stay with the elementary kids or go into the youth group–I guess because 6th grade is elementary school in some places but middle school in others. Timothy wanted to go into the youth group, and they had their first activity at a splatter paint room last weekend. He seemed to enjoy it.
3. A refurbished dresser. I mentioned last week that Jim had started this, and he got it done this week. The process had its problems, but he persevered. π
One reason it took me so long to decide what to do with this dresser is that I wanted it white, but the other furniture in the room is wooden. But then I figured the wooden items on the dresser would tie it in. Plus, we’re usually the only ones who see it, so who cares whether it “goes” or not if we like it? π Then, I had originally planned to leave the top of it stained like the desk Jim refurbished a few years ago–but I wasn’t sure if it would look right with the white mirror. So I decided to keep it all white with vintage-looking hardware found at Hobby Lobby.
A closer look:
He even lined the drawers with pretty paper.
4. A new dishwasher. Ours died on Tuesday–while fully loaded–about an hour after Jim brought the dresser in. It filled up with water to start the cycle, but then just never did anything else. We pushed buttons, turned it off and on, even turned the breaker off and on, with no results. While I unloaded dishes and started handwashing them, Jim scooped the water out and inspected it. He thought about replacing the motor. But he had said the last time he worked on it that he wasn’t going to mess with it any more. And why put a new motor in when everything else about it is old.
So we went to Lowe’s that afternoon. They had a simple one like I wanted in white, which is getting harder to find these days as most appliances in stores here seem to be stainless steel. They even had it in stock, so we were able to take it home that day. (The Home Depot here doesn’t keep any major appliances in stock any more. They just have floor models to look at, but will only deliver from their warehouse. When we ordered a hot water heater a couple of years ago, it took over a week to arrive. So we look at Lowe’s first now!)
5. Lunch with Melanie at Red Lobster with some gift cards from my family. Great conversation, great food, and we had an excellent waiter.
How was your week?

He was a great waiter, wasn’t he?
The dresser is so pretty. Very vintage and fresh looking. And I love the paper that Jim lined it with.
I’m glad you were able to replace your dishwasher so quickly. And how wonderful to be married to such a handy man!!
I’m glad that Timothy is enjoying youth group. They grow so quickly, don’t they!
I’m loving the cooler weather in the morning. Fall is slowly creeping up.
Have a great weekend.
This was the first time I noticed a chill in the air when I got up, but I woke up a little earlier than usual this morning. It was lovely. I almost put a sweater on.
Yes, it’s immensely helpful that Jim is so handy. He was glad the dw waited to break down until he was finished with the dresser. π
The dresser looks brand new. Love the hardware that you chose also. It ties everything together. I had forgotten about the desk that Jim redid so I clicked on the link. That is beautiful!
Timothy in youth group! It seems like he was just born last week!
When we need appliances, we go to Menards. They keep theirs in stock, but our Lowe’s does not. I’m glad that you were able to replace your dishwasher so quickly.
Jim said we could bang the dresser up a bit so it looked antique, but I declined. π
We don’t have a Menards here, unfortunately–the closest one is in KY. We used to have an appliance store that started with an H–can’t remember the name. But that used to be out go-to store until they closed.
I love the way your dresser came out! It looks so pretty with the wooden things on top. Our washing machine broke a little while ago. It was the same sort of thing it filled with water and then broke. It wouldn’t even drain so we had to drain it ourselves. I’m glad you were able to get a new dishwasher so quickly.
I loved reading about Timothy’s first youth group activity. I also think Jim did a great job refurbishing the dresser. Glad you saw the positive in the old dishwasher breaking down.
Sounds like a good week, although I hope your “half headache” is a thing of the past soon! I love your dresser. I have a friend who likes one antique thing in each room –so I think of your “one white piece” in that way too; it works! The hardware is pretty and Jim is a keeper for even lining the drawers!
I was doing a mystery shop at a local restaurant at noon when my niece (lives 2 hrs away) texted that she was in town and could she meet me for lunch. So she came by and that was a lot of fun!
I love your white dresser! Turned out so good. I’ve been looking for a few new end tables and am having the hardest time finding anything I like (and I don’t consider myself picky, ha). Red Lobster – always a treat for me too.
I hope your headache clears soon. Your dresser looks lovely and that was lucky finding a replacement dishwasher so quickly. Sometimes I think we probably could manage without one now there are just the two of us in the house but I wouldn’t get rid of ours. Have a good weekend.
I love the dresser and the lining paper! All your fave fives would have been faves for me, too!
Jim does do a beautiful job on refinishing all the furniture. I do like the look of the dresser.
All the fun meals and activities make a week so enjoyable. Hurrah for lunch with Melanie! Willow
I’m sorry to hear about the headache that has lasted so long. But that you still had some lovely faves.
What a nice job Jim did on that dresser. I clicked to look at the desk he did some years ago. There are some fun knobs at HL, aren’t there?
I remember the last time your dear husband spent time on that dishwasher. Glad you could find one and get it home and installed!
Nice to see you and Melanie getting together again and having a great visit.
Great job Jim did on the dresser. That is a lot of work!
I just replaced my fridge that was getting on 19 years old. All the drawers were cracked and/or broken on the runners and had been glued numerous times by Hubby. Though the fridge was still running, we needed white and they are hard to come by here too and we were told it can take up to six months to deliver! So rather than wait for it to quite working and being stuck we just bit the bullet. We had very limited choice.
So nice to have lunch with Melanie! Hope your headache has gone!
