I was reading tonight of an acquaintance who was thinking of going into a religion that is very much based on one’s works plus the church’s directives plus Christ for a right relationship with God — and my heart is so pained. I wish folks could see and understand that we can’t “do” anything to earn a right standing with God except repent and believe. One old song says it well:
My hope is in the Lord Who gave Himself for me,
And paid the price of all my sin at Calvary.Refrain:
For me He died, For me He lives,
And everlasting life and light He freely gives.No merit of my own His anger to suppress.
My only hope is found in Jesus’ righteousness.And now for me He stands Before the Father’s throne.
He shows His wounded hands and names me as His own.His grace has planned it all, ‘Tis mine but to believe,
And recognize His work of love and Christ receive.(Words and music by Norman J. Clayton)
But a song is only as good doctrinally as it is based on Scripture. And the Scriptural basis for this one can be found in the following:
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Romans 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Excellent post! I love this old song, and the Scripture you added at the end fit perfectly. Thanks for the visit with a great song!
That is one of my favorite hymns as well. We thoroughly rob God of His glory to suppose any bit of merit warrants the price He paid. Truth being that apart from Christ, we have no merit of our own. Very sorry to hear about your friend. May God enlighten his/her understanding to the truth of the gospel and not man’s vain imagination.
Barbara,
I was just doing a web search looking for the words of “My Hope is in the Lord” (to put some finishing touches on a message on 1 John 2:12-14), and found myself here.
Your site is a breath of fresh air! May the Lord continue to use it (I ended up reading a number of your posts) One word comes to mind – BALANCE! Keep up the good work.
2 Questions:
1. I have been praying about developing a web presence for evangelism and encouragement — you have done such an excellent job — are there any leads you could give me to get started?
2. Could I copy and use some of your blogs if I copy them in their entirety without editing and changing them at all — and give you the proper credit?
Thanks again for your presence and ministry on the web – you certainly would fall into the category of “Fathers” in 1 John 2:12-14. – Fred
