Show and Tell Friday: Surprising Picture Book

show-and-tell.jpg Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home hosts “Show and Tell Friday” asking “Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there’s a story behind your special something, that’s even better! If you would like to join in, all you have to do is post your “Show and Tell” on your blog, copy the post link, come over here and add it to Mr. Linky. Guidelines are here.“

This was a souvenir we bought the first time we visited the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. It’s a reproduction of a Victorian-style book and not an actual antique, but I love the poems and illustrations.

This has an added feature of what’s called “Surprising Pictures.” There are pictures throughout that look one way at first…

but then you pull a little ribbon, and the picture starts to change…

Maybe it’s leftover girlhood — the title does say Surprising Pictures for Little Folk — but I love this. 🙂 It’s also fun to bring it out to show children who come over. I keep it put up and handle it very gently while showing children so it stays in good condition. But little ones, especially, are fascinated by the changing pictures. I love that part, but I also love the Victorian-looking illustrations and poems.

  1. I just love this kinda thing….be they reproductions or the real thing….there is something about the texture, the smell and the illustrations that well……..make it exciting to hold and have forever and ever.

  2. Children’s books are my passion. I love the beautiful illustrations. It is very hard for me not to visit the kids area just to look over the new books.

The book you have is just lovely and I bet that story has provided so many hours of fun.

    Take care,
    Connie

  3. I’m with Connie, I love children’s books! and you know what..even though I am the first to appreciate an antique, I have a special appreciation for these reproductions. If this was actually old, then you could never allow children to touch it or manipulate it..and what a shame that would be!
    Thanks so much for sharing:-)

  4. Ohhhhh, this book is so wonderful! I adore all those pretty vintage illustrations! And if it was my book, I would copy some of the picutres on a piece of fabric and make a little crazy quilt heart out of it!

How blessed you are to owe such a wonderful book – even though it’s not really “antique”… ;-))

Thanks for sharing and have a great Friday!

  5. The book is very beautiful. I love this type of thing. I used to work for an auction company and saw many beautiful pieces of history. This is exquisite. Thanks so much for sharing.

    Blessings,

  6. I love your book! I love the old fashoined looking books – where little girls look like little girls and little boys look like little boys!

I think it is neat about the picture change. If I ever come over – I would want you to show it to me.

    Blessings,
    ~Jane
