Friday’s Fave Fives and Show and Tell Friday

friday-fave-five-12

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details.

I’m also linking the first item to Kelli’s Show and Tell Friday. showandtellmf3I know Kelli doesn’t want the Show and Tell combined with other memes, and I hope she’ll forgive me, but I just couldn’t see making a separate post, especially when I have another one and am thinking about one more already today.

1. Finally getting this done:

I bought this door decoration at an online shop (I am sorry to say I forget now which one) and showed it for a Show and Tell last September:

Wall pocket

Then a few weeks ago Hobby Lobby had all their floral stems on sale, so I bought several stems. I just put them together this morning:

Roses and Hydrangea door ornament

I can see I should have gone with the lavender hydrangea stems rather than the dark purple — I just loved the richness of the color when I bought them, but they get kind of lost against the dark door. I lightened the picture just so they’d show up. I am not entirely sure I am done fiddling with it, but so far I like it.

2. Talking to my future daughter-in-law. My son’s cell phone has about died, so his fiance called the home line last night, and I happened to answer the phone. I have missed her being able to come over on weekends (she has finished school and is back home for the semester), so I enjoyed chatting with her for a bit and hearing about wedding plans.

3. Jesse’s tip-off. Jesse got to do the initial tip-off for the last two basketball games, and he was excited. Melli asked earlier whether they won their last game that was to determine whether they’d be in the playoffs (thanks for asking!). No they didn’t, so I thought they were done, but evidently there is a tournament later this month they might be going to, so they’re still practicing. Jeremy videotaped parts of the last game since that was the only one Jim couldn’t attend due to work, so I may add video of the tip-off later on if I can.

4. Nice temperatures. Even though it is February and still winter, we have had some bright sunny days and springlike temperatures this past week. It’s chilly again this morning and I am sure we will have more winter-like weather before it is over, but I soak in those warmer (but not hot yet) days whenever I can.

5. Valentine’s day! OK, that is tomorrow and not from this last week, but it is one of my favorite holidays.

I’m going to add just a few more — it is hard to stop at five once you get started!! But I don’t want to make the post go on and on, either, so I’ll just list them: a good dentist’s visit with one filling I was concerned about being ok, a wonderful ladies’ meeting Monday night that I am still enjoying even days later, our cable coming back on after being out for six hours yesterday (and the fact that we even have cable! It’s one of those easily taken for granted things until it’s off for a while), and old movies — I just watched an old version of David Copperfield (the one with W. C. Fields as Micawber) recently and started watching A Tale of Two Cities — I taped it, so I will catch the rest tomorrow. Plus the fact that as Christians we don’t have to be superstitious about things like Friday the 13th!!

Have a great Valentine’s Day tomorrow!

Show and Tell Friday: Christmas presents

I wanted to show some of my Christmas presents my dear family showered me with this year.

My husband got me two new Boyd’s Bears:

Winter Boyd's
I love this pretty winter one.

This one says around the bottom, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, Mother was right after all.”

Some new books:

My blog friend Anita in Germany often mentions these Tilda books. I just love her style.

This pretty cameo:

My future daughter-in-law sent me this beautiful tablecloth:

I love the lace and pretty stitching, especially the hearts in the corners.

New tablecloth

New tablecloth

It’s small, about the size of one you’d put on a round end table. It’s almost too pretty to use. But then again, I really hate it when I give something to someone and they stick it in a closet because they don’t want to mess it up. I want them to use it. So I will look for a place to display this.

Hope you are having a good first week of 2009!

I’ve been wanting to put a miniature Christmas tree on my dry sink for a long time, and got some components in previous years, but this is the first year I got everything I needed to complete it and actually put it up.

Miniature Christmas tree

It’s a smidgen too tall for the space there — I think I might snip the top of it so the little star topper fits under the shelf. I love the tree skirt (half off at Hobby Lobby, as were some of the other decorations). I’m pleased with how it turned out.

I won from a giveaway Miss Sandy had at Quill Cottage this lovely Nativity decoration she made.

Christmas Nativity decoration

She has one she uses as a tree topper. I don’t want to put mine there but I haven’t decided exactly where to put it yet. But it’s lovely — thank you, Sandy!

I have a couple of Christmas pins, one a little more dressy and one more casual:

Christmas pins

I got them both at an annual craft show when we lived in GA. That’s one of the things I miss most about that area. Unfortunately it’s a little too far to drive there just for this event, but I’ve been tempted.

And, finally, it has been a little while since I showed my “work in progress,” so I thought I’d do that today as well.

WIP

I’ve had to lay it aside to get other things done over the holidays, but I’m looking forward to getting back to it soon.

My college student’s last day of school was yesterday, and my youngest’s last day is today. My husband is working from home today and then off next week, so we’re about to enjoy some vacation time. I got a late start on Christmas tasks — I don’t know what kind of fog I was in, but it suddenly dawned on me that December was nearly half over and I needed to get down to business. I kicked it into high gear, and praying much and leaning on the Lord for grace, got out-of-town packages in the mail as well as the Christmas cards to far-flung relatives. I’ll finish the other Christmas cards today and have some odds and ends shopping to finish up. Last night was the last “official” event to go to, my youngest son’s Christmas concert at school. We do have a Christmas Eve service at church, and my anniversary is Sunday, for which my husband is taking me out to dinner Saturday night. We may go to one of the drive-through Christmas light displays nearby. I haven’t done any baking and hope to get some Harvest Loaf Cake made this weekend. But overall I am feeling good about the progress on holiday activities and looking forward to next week. Have a great weekend!

Show and Tell Friday: Gifts from China

My husband took a business trip to China last week and brought home several goodies.

This one was for my youngest, but I thought the packaging was neat:

Skittles from China

Chinese Skittles!

This is a box of chocolates…

"Manly Pandas"

…that claimed to be “manly”..

….that were shaped like pandas.

We joked a lot about the “Manly Pandas.” They had pandas on a lot of things.

A couple more treats:

The left is like peanut brittle. I am not sure about the one on the right. I don’t think any of us has tried it yet.

I thought the packaging here was pretty:

And it contained this lovely necklace:

I love the detailed cutwork and the pinkness and those flowers — cherry blossoms?

Thanks for looking at my new Chinese treasures! My husband made it back home safe and sound and tired, and we enjoyed looking at pictures, watching videos, and hearing stories.

Show and Tell Friday: Jesse’s room makeover

We moved into a house that was about 30 years old at the time, and most of the wall and floor coverings needed to be replaced. Of course, you have to space those projects out as time and finances permit. So after ten years we are just now getting to the bedroom of Jesse, my youngest son who just turned 15. He had three days off due ro a teacher’s conference, so Jim took those days off as well.

I didn’t really get a “before” picture as it was before we started working on it because…I would have been too embarrassed. He has the smallest bedroom in the house but the most “stuff,” some of it from younger days and no longer really played with, some that his older brothers passed down to him as they cleaned out their things. We would sort through and purge a few shelves or drawers at a time, but it was overwhelming for both of us.

My husband’s strategy was to pack up everything into boxes and put it in the attic, because if we took time to sort through it before painting we wouldn’t get done in the time frame we had. As we packed things away, if there was something obvious that needed to be thrown away or put in a give-away box, we’d do that, but otherwise we’ll just take the boxes out one or two at a time as we have time later to sort through.

So…here are the “before pictures I took after most of the furniture was out and they had done some spackling:

Jesse's room "before"

Jesse's room "before"

The walls look a little greenish here, but they were actually a barely-there blue.

Of course, you notice the hideous carpet:

Ugly carpet!!

We were delighted to find nice hardwood floors underneath:

Nice hardwood floor under that awful carpet

Jesse first wanted to paint the walls red, but we felt that would be a little too intense. Then he said brown: we weren’t sure how that would do in a small room, but we were okay with it. Then he said he wanted to paint the trim blue. I wasn’t sure about that at all. But Home Depot had a computer setup where you could click on the paint color and then on the walls or trim of a picture of a room, so we tried it out, and it wasn’t bad.

It actually turned out better than I thought it would:

Jesse's room "after"

It was hard to capture the right shade with the lighting in the room and this camera, but this is pretty close. The walls are Double Chocolate, the trim is Smoky Blue. The doors and dresser are supposed to be Oyster, which I had thought was a little tanner than this — this pretty much looks barely off-white. But it’s fine.

I think he was wanting to try for a look that was grown and masculine, and I think this definitely fits the bill. I probably would have done things differently…but then, he is the one living in it, so as long as it wasn’t too outlandish, I was fine with letting him make the choices.

It hasn’t arrived yet, but I ordered this comforter — I let him choose it out of a catalog. And this weekend we’ll look for an area rug — I found a couple that incorporate the different colors.

He’s very pleased!

I also wanted to show my “work in progress.” It’s about one-fourth done.

I wanted to show you a couple of sweet items found on sale at Forget Me Not Dreams on a Pink Friday sponsored by the shops at Make Mine Pink (which actually does have more than pink items. 🙂 )

Hot pads

I just LOVED these pot holders — I rarely see anything in pink for the kitchen in local shops. I didn’t realize how big they were when I ordered them, though — maybe 8 or 10 inches on each side.

Wall pocket

I loved everything about this wall pocket, too — the color, the design, the heart shape. I was thinking it was too bad I’d have to wait til spring to use it on my front door, but, I don’t know — it might look ok with fall decorations in it. What do you think?

I have to say, I totally love Pink Fridays at Make Mine Pink (and no, I am not paid nor asked to say that!) We don’t have shops like this in town, and it’s like visiting a nice sidewalk sale without having to leave home.

I also wanted to show my current work in progress:

WIP

It’s coming along! I am not finished back-stitching the scissors, but this shows how the back-stitching really defines specific areas:

Show and Tell Friday: Family room and pin

Recently I found this sweet little pin on sale at Sweet Necessi-Teas.

Sweet pin

If you’ve been reading here long, you know I love hearts and pink roses and vintage/old fashioned things…and sales! So this fit the bill all the way around!

As the shop’s name would suggest, most of its items have something to do with tea, but I didn’t notice until after I looked at it a while that the little charm at the bottom is a tea bag. Isn’t that cute? Unfortunately it’s a little dark right there in the picture.

I also loved the way it came packaged:

Package

Something I hope to accomplish in the next week is to figure out how to arrange these

Family room decorations

On this wall.

Family room wall

A while back we replaced our TV and entertainment center, and the new cabinet was wider than the old one, so we had to take out bookcases that used to flank it and put them in another room. That left a lot of wall space. I’ve been collecting various items through sales and received some as gifts. I want to get a shelf as long as the long piece there (which, by the way, I got half-price at Hobby Lobby!) I am thinking of making three separate groupings, one over the TV, and one on each side, maybe placed a little lower. I’m thinking of putting the long plaque and a shelf over the TV.

The picture up there now is an older one I got during a Home Interiors craze that went through all my friends years ago. 🙂

Family room picture

It shows a mom stopping what she is doing to sit down and look at her child’s picture. I loved that — and hope I remembered to do that often! Of course, I love the house and flowers and colors in it, too. It’s appropriate for a family room, but I am trying to downplay pink and flowers in this room for the boys’ sake. So I haven’t decided whether to keep this in here or put it somewhere else…though there is really no room anywhere else for it.

I also had this painting over the mantle before receiving my Shepherd print.

Painting from Gayle

It is special to me because of who made it. Several years ago when we lived in GA, the church we attended had a “secret sister” program where we drew names at the beginning of the year and prayed for and did little things for our secret sister anonymously throughout the year and then found out who our secret sister was at the end of the year. I drew the name of a lady named Gayle, who was very artistic and crafty. She couldn’t do much in that vein for her secret sister, though, because then that would reveal who she was in our very small church. So she often waited to do something special til the end of the year. Well, that particular year I had her name, but we found we were going to have to move in May, so I went ahead and revealed my identity to her. She gave me this as a thank you. I love it because it is from her, and I love the dogwood blossoms — two of the four homes we have lived in have had white dogwoods. She admitted that the little bird ended up “looking like he was ready to peck someone’s eye out.” 🙂 She added the verse because she said it reminded her of me, though it is actually speaking of wisdom. I hope I have gained and display wisdom, pleasantness, and peace, though I assured her I am far from walking in any of those elements perfectly.

But I am not quite sure where to place this little birdie. Decisions, decisions!

Hopefully I’ll have this figured out and can show you the finished project next time.

My good friend Carol and I went out to lunch Tuesday for what I thought was a “catch up with each other” time, but she had actually planned it as a belated birthday gift. Of course, we did catch up with each other too, which was the best part, and enjoyed the reopening of one of our favorite restaurants. Carol also gave me a birthday gift then:

Music box

It’s not only a lovely box, but a music box:

Music box

It plays “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” I’m not quite sure where to put it and what to put in it yet, but I love it. 🙂 It fits right in with my decor.

I also wanted to show the updated progress on the cross stitch piece I am working on for those who might be interested. I enjoy seeing works-in-progress of others, so I thought some might like to see how this is coming along.

Cross stitch progress

The pitcher there looks a little similar to the one on the music box, doesn’t it?

Show and Tell and a decorating question for you

I wanted to show this cute little shelf set actually on the wall…and I was going to hang them up myself, but the places that are supposed to catch on the nail were in odd places (different heights on the back), and I thought I’d better wait for my husband.

Rose shelves

These were on sale at My Rose Retreat in connection with Pink Friday a couple of weeks ago. I can’t wait to get them up!

I also wanted to show the progress on my cross stitch piece:

WIP

The area that comprises the shine in the window was 1 thread in only a half cross stitch. That certainly goes a lot faster! But I have never done that and wasn’t sure I’d like it –but I do.

I also wanted to ask for some opinions. I found fabric for my family room curtains months ago, but I’ve been held up starting them because I couldn’t find any trim here in town. Then just a few weeks ago I got some at a place going out of business, but I am not quite sure about it and haven’t had a chance yet to go to another town and explore. I am almost of a mind to skip the trim altogether.

Here are the two fabrics:

Fabric for curtains

The pattern has long straight curtains panels topped by a valance which is done in such a way that you see a little bit of the lining. I was going to use the checked fabric as the main fabric for the curtains and valance and the toile as the lining of the valance that will show in places. But I thought it was too pretty to have so much of it hidden. But I don’t like using it as the main fabric for the valance (I am positioning these according to what I am trying to describe, though of course it would be gathered and cut to a pattern):

Fabric for curtains

I thought about making a double valance instead, one with the toile, and a shorter one with the checked fabric over the checked panels, so that more of the toile could be seen all the way across:

Fabric for curtains

And then I have thought about just using the checked fabric for the valance and panels and saving the toile for pillows. The place I bought the toile from had just enough for the valance and I was going to need more for the pillows anyway: this would solve that problem.

Fabric for curtains

The trim shown is what I bought at the going-out-of-business place. It’s about the color of the couches in that room. If I don’t use it on the valance I can use it on pillows.

So — if any of my descriptions have made sense — what do you think? Trim, no trim, a different trim? Toile lining, toile valance, no toile?

And thanks for sharing. It is these kinds of (in)decisions that hold me up in getting projects done.

New floral arrangement

Vase

These are a couple of recent online sale purchases. Every Friday some of the shops at Make Mine Pink feature sales based on a theme of the week. Last week it was baby gifts, this week it is “Wonderful Whites.” I think the week I got these the theme was something like “From the Garden.”

I got these from Hydrangea Home at a very nice sale price. The first one is just “me” all the way around. And I have always wanted something like the second one for when I cut a few roses from the bushes along the house or bring flowers home from the store.

I also wanted to show my current work-in-progress:
