This is something I really needed to read and to ponder today. It is from Elisabeth Elliot’s book A Lamp For My Feet and was included in Saturday’s e-mail devotional made up of her writings, available from Back to the Bible.
Certain aspects of the job the Lord has given me to do are very easy to postpone. I make excuses, find other things that take precedence, and, when I finally get down to business to do it, it is not always with much grace. A new perspective has helped me recently:
The job has been given to me to do.
Therefore it is a gift.
Therefore it is a privilege.
Therefore it is an offering I may make to God.
Therefore it is to be done gladly, if it is done for Him.
Therefore it is the route to sanctity. Here, not somewhere else, I may learn God’s way. In this job, not in some other, God looks for faithfulness. The discipline of this job is, in fact, the chisel God has chosen to shape me with–into the image of Christ.
Thank you, Lord, for the work You have assigned me. I take it as your gift; I offer it back to you. With your help I will do it gladly, faithfully, and I will trust You to make me holy.

I have this book too, and love it. Thanks for passing on this good word.
This is very powerful! Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks for coming over to visit for S&T Friday – I have done lots and lots of those Precious Moments cross stitches – lots of work, but so beautiful. I will most likely be doing an “I Used To” post on them one of these days!
On today’s topic – I have been a terrible procrastinator on the final task before my retirement – it was a real struggle to get going on the procedures manual for my replacement. Once I got going, it went pretty well, but it was a painful process, and getting started was really tough. So I can relate!
I will ‘steal’ this post and stash it in my treasure chest. π
