Friday’s Fave Five

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details, and you can visit Susanne to see the list of others’ favorites or to join in.

1. The birthday of Jason, my middle son.

2. Jason’s excitement about setting up housekeeping. He found a house to rent nearby and was so excited to show it to us and buy the first few things for it. He’ll be even more excited to bring his bride home in a few weeks when he gets married. Though there have some bittersweet moments at the thought of his “leaving the nest,” it’s also a happy, exciting time seeing him take these steps.

3. Chocolate night at church. During the summers on Wed. nights at church we have Family Camp type meetings with a fellowship afterward, and each fellowship centers around a theme — breakfast foods one night, peaches one night, etc., and last night was chocolate night. My favorite. 🙂 I made a Four-Layer Dessert (except I made a graham cracker crust instead), which we all love, but I only make it for a fellowship like this or when we have company because it’s just too much for our family. Plus I was hoping someone would bring a certain type of cake — I don’t know what it is, but it’s flat and has a particular flavor of icing. I think it might be Texas Sheet Cake, but I’ve never tried making it myself. Someone (I haven’t figured out who) often brings it to church fellowships, and I was hoping it would be there and I would get some — and they did and I did!

4. Books about craft areas. Have I mentioned that when Jason gets married I am inheriting his room as a sewing/craft/guest room? Maybe once or twice? 🙂 I was going to ask for Where Women Create and Organizing Your Craft Space, both by Jo Packham, for my birthday, but then I realized that I’d have the room by my birthday and could use the ideas before then. Both arrived this week. I devoured the one and started the other last night. I’m enjoying the luscious pictures and great ideas.

CreateParty PosterJuly5. Where Bloggers Create. I saw at Quill Cottage that today is a blog event called Where Bloggers Create in which bloggers are invited to shop what their creative space looks like. I’ve been looking forward to this since I first saw it mentioned. I won’t be joining in, because my creative space is in need of much help, whether I were getting a room for it or not. But I’ll be looking forward to getting ideas and inspiration.

Happy Friday!

  1. Chocolate night at church sounds very lovely. I focused on your no. 2. My son is only 5 but I’m starting to think about that time you are going through now. All the best to your letting Jason officially leave the nest 🙂

  2. That’s great that your son found a place close by. Chocolate night! Now that’s what I’m talking about… :0)
    What fun themes.
    Have a great weekend Barbara…

  3. At least your son is going to live nearby, when I got married I moved 1000 miles away! If I had it to do over …. well, we won’t go there.

I noted that you wanted to try Texas Sheet Cake, but you never said how you liked it! That cake is one of my family’s favorites! It gets requested at birthdays a lot.

Thanks for sharing about that creative space blog event. I’ll have to check it out, although it will only be a dream for me for the future.

    • I LOVE Texas sheet cake. I need to go back and revise that paragraph — I meant I had never made it myself, but I look for it and have some at these events.

I did find a recipe online that looks and sounds like it. I want to make it, but we’re all trying to watch calories around here. Maybe for my birthday. 😀

  4. Fun favs of the week. Congrats to Jason on his birthday and upcoming marriage. Thanks for visiting.

Yes, that is a painted spice rack my glitter is in. It did not have the bottles but I found some little flavoring bottles at a flea market. I washed them and let them dry then filled them with glitter. Funny thing is I think the lids soaked up the smell of the flavoring and every time I use glitter I get a whiff of butter rum, vanilla, etc. Spice racks are also perfect for those little bottles of acrylic paints.

How fun to be dreaming of you new crafting space and such perfect timing to visit all the fun links. You are such a sweetie for the link. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  5. What an awesome FFF. The chocolate night makes me want some now Care to send a piece over? LOL. What a wonderful week you had. Hope you enjoy the sewing room 🙂 Aloha

  6. I have a “Jason”, too who left the nest, got married and bequeathed me his old bedroom for a craft room. I miss him bunches but I LOVE having a computer/craft room. Good luck designing yours.

  7. Sounds like you’ve had a really great week! Last week I mistakenly thought that THIS week I would get around to Friday Favorites again — hahaha … silly me! But VBS is done now — so I should be able to find some sort of ‘normalcy’ again soon! LOL! You’re going to really enjoy having that creating space! I can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  8. That four layer dessert is so easy and so delicious. What a great idea you church has to do theme nights, I love stuff like that 🙂

  9. Happy Birthday to your son and now I want to know how I can talk my church into having a chocolate night you lucky thing LOL

  10. Happy Birthday 2 your son and now I want to know how I can talk my church into having a chocolate night you lucky thing LOL

  11. Hi Barbara,
Of course you know that, if I were there, I would be joining you for #3 most definitely!
    Have a great weekend.

  12. A birthday, new place, a wedding, new bride. I’d say your son is having a very full year. All the best to him in these big life steps.

    Your dessert looks good.

  13. I’m not really “crafty” per se, but would love a room to put my sewing machine and just put projects that I’m working on and can’t really put away all the time. We’re going to get a desk for me that we’ll put in what we call the “big room” (that’s because it’s a huge room that has the piano, dining room table, bookshelves, a couch, and the sewing machine. How’s that for a weird combination of uses!).

If if a desk goes in there, the sewing machine has to go. We’ll be empty nesters in the fall, but the kids will still be coming home from college often enough that I can’t claim one of their rooms. So a room to myself would be a wonderful thing! But not yet.

  14. Oh, I thought it was the oldest son who was leaving home. It is unusual for the middle one to go first. I’m going to check out the sites you listed.
    Happy Birthday, whenever it is.

  15. Happy Birthday to Jason and Congratulations too. You must be excited and sad.
I love the chocolate night – what a great idea.
    thanks for sharing.

  16. A wedding in the family is always exciting – and bittersweet as we watch our young ones take that step.

A craft room/guest room in exchange for having your son move out is a wonderful blessing! Have fun setting it up and then have even more fun using it!

  17. The chocolate night sounds really good.

All the best to your son in the phase of life he’s stepping into. God bless your family!
