Even though this poem by John Updike is titled “September,” the first line or so has been running through my mind the last few days. And the last four lines seem to describe the rainy week we’ve had.
The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.

Oh man those apples look good! The poem was tasty, too.
Beautiful poem, Barbara. It really evoked the smells, tastes and sights of fall. *sigh*
But see… it’s the whole global warming thing, I think! October USED to HAPPEN in September! I know when I was a kid we went back to school the day after Labor Day — and it was AUTUMN! (at least in DC it was…) π
Beautiful!
Have a blessed weekend! π
Lovely. This is from ‘A Child’s Calendar,’ isn’t it? Such a beautiful collection.
