Friday’s Fave Five

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details, and you can visit Susanne to see the list of others’ favorites or to join in.

1. One of my favorite things this week, this month, this year, in a long time, was getting together with some of our dearest friends Saturday night. We’ve known each other since early married days. We only live about 45 minutes apart from each other now, but it is hard to coordinate schedules and make time, especially hard to get whole families together now that some of the kids are grown and away from home. Jason and Mittu coordinated a get-together at their house — these had not yet met Mittu — and it was such a good time.

2. We didn’t have a snow day exactly, because we didn’t get snow last weekend — some areas not far from us got 4″, but we only got sleet and ice pellets. But the overnight temperature of about 16F froze all the slush and made for hazardous driving, so our church canceled both services. Though I did miss them, and Sunday seems so strange without church, it was nice to just have a day of rest. We try to keep Sunday as restful as we can anyway — though we’re not legalistic about it, we try not to do work that day unless it just has to be done. So to just nap or read or visit without feeling like I needed to be getting to something else was refreshing.

3. Pudding chip cookies. I’d been craving them for weeks and finally made them.

4. Jeremy and I got a take-out lunch at McAlister’s Deli yesterday. We hadn’t ordered from there in a long time. I love their potato soup. We don’t usually get dessert from there, but this time I got a brownie and Jeremy got a ginormous chocolate chip cookie, and we each split ours to share with each other.

5. Puffs Plus tissues with lotion. Jim doesn’t like them as they tend to shred if he has any whiskers at all, so I don’t keep them around all the time, but they really do help an aching nose. I’ve unfortunately needed them this week. Jim and Jason were sick earlier in the week and now Jeremy and I are. This is not a good time to be sick as I have a lot that needs to get done over the next few days.

I’m also glad for a better weekend forecast than what they were saying earlier in the week: they were predicting snow, sleet, and ice, but now it looks like it will be just rain. Yet the excess rain from last time still hasn’t evaporated or soaked in yet — there’s still standing water throughout town. I’m hoping we don’t have a repeat of our flooding incident.

And I’m glad I finished The Tartan Pimpernel.

And, oh yeah — Lost is back on!!!

Happy Friday!

  1. Those pudding chip cookies sound delightful. I’ll have to give those a try. McAlister’s Deli is great isn’t it? I have one right near my job. Sorry about your flooding incident. We had one recently ourselves-what a pain! Have a nice week!

  2. Isn’t it something that we can live so close to a dear friend, yet still rarely see each other? I do that, too. Glad you made the time to be with your friend. Pudding chip cookies? Sounds yummy! And Puffs Plus with lotion—the only Kleenex to use in the winter months! I love it.

  3. Playing a little catch up around here (off to read your review next!). Sorry to hear you are feeling sick. =(

But! I am VERY glad that the weather didn’t keep you from seeing your very close friends. Sounds like y’all had a wonderful time!

Rest up and I hope you have a great weekend!

  4. What a great week. Especially your number 1. 🙂 I hope. Hooray food is back in your FFF LOL The cookies and potato soup sound great. 🙂 I hope the weather holds for you. Weather up North doesn’t sound too good. YEAH for LOST! I enjoyed the premiere. After the fiasco last year and that time warp thing they did I was so confused. I don’t get what they are doing showing Oceanic 815 making it all the way to LA. But I’m sure they will explain that later. Possibly they wanted to show what would have happened. I was so glad Sayid didn’t die 🙂 But poor Juliet. I hope Sawyer doesn’t carry the grudge towards Jack especially after she said she did it for him. 🙂

  5. Hey, Barbara! So glad that you had just a wonderful time with your friends. Times like those are so awesome.
And I know what you mean about having a Sunday to just rest, even though we do love going to the house of the Lord. There’s just something about an entire Sunday at home. So glad you were able to enjoy it so.
Oh, there’s nothing like a soft tissue for a chapped, runny nose. Ahhhhh…..:-)
We’re waiting on the snow to arrive here…..we may or may not get alot! :-/
    Have a blessed weekend!

  6. The choc chip cookies sounds interestig…. The recpie looks to be the same as mine – except for the pudding. I’m going to try adding it next time. I can imagine it would make a great addition.

Sorry you aren’t feeling well. Keep those lotion laden tissues handy, and get better.

Glad you were able to get together with your friends!

  7. Those tissues with lotion really are nice when your nose is sore. I buy a box about once a year when I have a bad cold.

I love those cookies too, but no cookies for me these days!

  8. Ahhh… getting together with OLD friends is just the best! That would have been MY favorite favorite this week too!

The only cookie I have ever CRAVED was during my first pregnancy I craved Fig Newton’s the ENTIRE 9 months! And they were sO expensive back then – and I sO broke – I simply could not afford them! NO WAY! But in my 8th month, I got a check from my father for $20. Do you know I bought THREE boxes of Fig Newtons and ate every single one of them in one sitting! No lie! And the really strange thing about that is… I had never liked Fig Newton’s before that. But I’ve never NOT liked them since! Those pudding chip cookies do look good though…. I’m not going to make them though! 🙂

  9. I keep a box of Puffs plus lotion in the linen cupboard for those times when one of us has a horrible head cold. It’s awesome for those red, sore noses.

Ordering in from a deli sounds yummy. I actually don’t think we have those kinds of deli’s around here.

Fun that you were able to visit with old family friends.

  10. Dear friends, homemade cookies, and a lunch out? Sounds like a recipe for a wonderful week!

I hope that better weather forecast holds for you.
    Happy weekend!

  11. Wonderful to get together with old friends! Maybe your day of resting will help you get over that whatever is causing the use of those tissues 🙂 Enjoy your weekend, Barbara.
