Friday’s Fave Five

Welcome to Friday’s Fave Five, hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, in which we can share five of our favorite things from the last week. This has been a wonderful exercise in looking for and appreciating the good things God blesses us with. Here are some highlights of the last week:

1. My dear hubby’s birthday.

2. Spring break! It’s a little earlier than we’re used to, but I enjoy it any time. 🙂 My favorite part of spring break: no alarm clocks! (Funny how 6 or 7 a.m. is “sleeping late” these days.)

3. Jesse’s visit. For months now Jesse had been wanting to go visit his old school in SC over spring break because theirs isn’t until later. Jim had some work he needed to do on our old house, so they went down for a couple of days this week. Jesse told one of his friends (both to arrange to spend some time with him at his house after school and to make sure the class wasn’t going to be away on a field trip or something), and we contacted the school office ahead of time, but otherwise he wanted to surprise the rest of his old class. What was really funny was that one girl wrote last week on his Facebook page that they all missed him and he should come down for lunch Monday — not knowing that he was planning to do just that! So that added some fun to it. A bunch of them even got together with him for dinner one night. He had a great time.

4. Daffodils. I mentioned before I had wanted to plant some daffodils last fall, but then thought maybe I should wait to see what might already be here — this is our first spring in this house and I don’t know what might already be planted. But so far I hadn’t seen any signs of them — until yesterday. As I pulled up into the driveway, I saw a whole patch of them — behind the shed, of all places. Would it be silly to say they almost brought tears to my eyes? They’re not my favorite flowers, but I love them because they’re a cheerful first sign of spring.

5. My blog host, WordPress, survived an attack with relatively little trouble. I was working on my Marriage Monday post when I noticed it wasn’t auto-saving like usual. I clicked on “Save Draft” — and poof, everything but the first paragraph disappeared. I was….upset, to put it mildly. But later I learned that WP was subject to a large attack of some kind. So losing one blog post and having some slower than usual loading times on other WP blogs were comparatively minor annoyances. Thanks to those at WP who worked so hard to keep it up and running. And I DID learn to copy my text first in case anything like that ever happens again.

I could also add I’m glad we did not have any serious flooding this week — we’ve had a bunch more rain, and the ground was still pretty saturated from last week’s flooding. There were roads where the water was almost to the edge of the road, but at least in out area, that was mostly it: only one road on my regular route had some standing water on one side. I am more than ready for a little sunshine!

  2. Glad Jim had a great birthday.

    How much fun for Jesse! I would have enjoyed that in high school. It’s always fun to surprise and spend time with friends.

    And yowee. I know what you mean about losing posts. Occasionally (thankfully only VERY occasionally) blogger does that to me and after you’ve put a lot of time, effort, thought and WORK into something…that can be frustrating indeed! Glad they fixed the problem.

  3. Glad you had a fun celebration for hubby’s birthday. I understand completely that those daffodils brought tears to your eyes. Such a sweet thing to see bringing hope..
    I read about that wordpress issue after the fact. Was wondering what was going on with the new post page…

  5. Happy belated Birthday to your hubby! I’m glad Jesse got to make the tip, and ohhhh daffodils!! I’m like you. I see crocuses and daffodils, and it’s like a whisper from Heaven. My server had an awful thing happen a few weeks ago, and I know, it can be stressful, but I’m starting to get used to these things. I guess it goes with blogging.

  6. Sounds like you had a wonderful week!! Our Spring Break up here in my part of NY isn’t until the week between Palm Sunday and Easter….and i cannot wait!!! But…at least we see the sun today, the sun is melting and it’s a balmy 53! halleluia!!

  7. I’m hoping you get sunny days soon to match those daffodils. I think they’d bring a tear to my eye, too, after a winter like this in your area.

  8. Happy birthday to your dear hubby. I love daffodils for the reason that I don’t see any everyday in my part of the world. They’re expensive as they are imported. I’ve been enjoying WordPress; didn’t know there was an attack or that only some countries had that. Glad it’s sorted and thanks for mentioning “copy text first” I would not want to lose posts either. Happy weekend! Yay! no alarm clocks 🙂

  9. How cool that Jesse got to go home and surprise his friends. I bet that was his highlight of the week, too!

    I already knew, via Facebook, that Jim had a good birthday. I see by his cake that he’s just 1 year and 1 month older than I am.

    When our bulbs finally bloom (they’re swelling up) I’ll post a picture. How cook that yours are already coming up.

    And I had no idea WP was attacked — although I did notice my blog seemed to be “down” for a little while the other day. Hmm.

  12. We still have so much snow that we won’t see daffodils until April. Enjoy yours. It’s fun to see what you’ve already got in the garden.

    And I laughed at you looking for some spring flowers to emerge from the cold ground……it’s like treasure hunting in a new house. Same kind of thing I would do and enjoy!

  17. Hope you get your sunshine soon, Barbara. I agree about the daffodils — I love their sunny little appearance, giving notice that spring is coming. Yeah, spring! We are itching to get going on the garden.

    I’m with you on daffodils: they’re not my favorite flowers, but I appreciate that burst of yellow early in spring.

  19. I think daffodils are really pretty. There were heavy rain and storm hitting Penang. The windows of my apartment actually shook and my friend’s neighbor’s tree was uprooted. It was quite bad…
