The Week In Words

”"

Welcome to The Week In Words, where we share quotes from the last week’s reading. If something you read this past week  inspired you, caused you to laugh, cry, think, dream, or just resonated with you in some way, please share it with us, attributing it to its source, which can be a book, newspaper, blog, Facebook — anything that you read. More information is here.

Sorry to be late today! We had a very good but very busy weekend! I just said good-bye to some dear out-of-town company. Without further ado, here are some quotes that spoke to me this week:

This is from Robin Lee Hatcher‘s Facebook page:

“He that revels in a well-chosen library, has innumerable dishes and all of admirable flavor.” — William Godwin

I love that characteization.

This is from another friend’s Facebook:

“It’s better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right.”

I wouldn’t say I am a pessimist, but I probably lean slightly more that direction than the other. I thought this was much more poignant than saying “Look on the bright side” — which can seem a bit shallow if the bright side is a little hard to fathom at the moment.

And from Diane‘s Facebook:

“Satan is so much more in earnest than we are–he buys up the opportunity while we are wondering how much it will cost.”— Amy Carmichael

He is, sadly, more relentless in pursuing his goals — that is a rebuke to me.

If you’ve read anything that particularly spoke to you that you’d like to share, please either list it in the comments below or write a post on your blog and then put the link to that post (not your general blog link) in Mr. Linky below. I do ask that only family-friendly quotes be included. I hope you’ll visit some of the other participants as well and glean some great thoughts to ponder.

Don’t forget to leave a comment, even if you don’t have any quotes to share! :)

  1. Glad you had a good weekend with good friends!

Love the library quote. I was just bemoaning (which reflects that I can be a pessimist too) the fact that I have accumulated SO many free books on my Kindle now that I’ll never get around to reading them all. But that’s a good problem to have.

The Amy Carmichael quote is unsettlingly good. We are so risk-averse at times when we need to be courageous (I’m preaching to myself).

I’m thankful to be back on board this week! Thanks for your faithfulness in hosting.

  2. I, too, love the metaphor of books as food. (Two of my favorite things!) Of course, the emphasis has to be placed on “well-chosen”. I have definitely seen libraries that are little more than a steady diet of Twinkies. (Not that Twinkies every so often aren’t fine…)

  3. I am more of a pessimist too. My view is I like to be prepared for the worst and if it doesn’t happen then How Happy is that! ha… Concerning the lettering–it says you can remove it with the help of a blow dryer. I wondered about that too!
