Friday’s Fave Five

Friday's Fave Five

It’s astonishing to me that this is the last Friday in April already. On Fridays I try to slow down and savor the moments with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story.

1. Impromptu visits. Jason, Mittu, and Timothy stopped by to borrow my kitchen scale and stayed for a while. Then Jason and Timothy dropped in again later in the week. Jeremy had sent Timothy a surprise box, so we had a multi-family FaceTime session to see what it was (a radio kit).

2. Pre-ordering books. I’ve mentioned Gabrielle Meyer’s Time Crossers series here many times. I follow her on Instagram and saw that the newest in the series was available for pre-ordering at a reduced price and with free shipping. Publishers like pre-orders because it gives them an idea about how much interest there is in the book, so they offer incentives I am happy to accept. 🙂

3. Roads paved. I mentioned last week that preliminary work had been done to repave our out-of-the-way roads in our little neighborhood. The roads were paved the very next day! They look so much better, and I was amazed at how quickly the process went.

4. Finding a timely book. While looking for an older, previously read book on my shelves, I rediscovered one I had not read yet and had completely forgotten about: Life Under the Sun: The Unexpectedly Good News of Ecclesiastes by Hannah Anderson. I’ve read all of her other books except this and one other and enjoyed them immensely. This is in a Bible study format, unlike her others. Our pastor just started a new sermon series in Ecclesiastes, so I plan to use this book as a companion through the series.

5. Peonies blooming! Or at least beginning to open. We planted them last May, after their blooming cycle. I’d heard that it can take them a few years to flower, so I am delighted they each have several buds looking like they are ready to pop. I am excited to see them open more fully.

Peonies

The roses are blooming, too!

Bonus: We saw the first hummingbird of the season at the feeder outside my kitchen window!

How was your week?

  1. Beautiful flowers and yay for the impromptu visit!

Our neighborhood needs to be repaved but we are at the north end of town and they seem to wait until June around here! although the main roads are done. Glad yours were done quickly!

I have actually heard of that book!!!! But I’ve never read it. (the Ecclesiastes one) I keep forgetting about her Bible Studies…I may look into one of them for my Autumn small group.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Barbara!

  2. What a fun week! Love those impromptu visits. I didn’t realize the information that you shared about why publishers offer pre-ordering prices a bit less pricey. That would definitely be an incentive!

Your flowers are so pretty. I was working in a flowerbed earlier this morning and noticed that the Peonies in that particular bed are full of buds! And I mixed up my first batch of hummingbird feed this morning. We saw our first hummingbird yesterday!

  3. Your peonies are lovely! Just looked at mine (transplanted 2 weeks ago from Mom’s) and they look wilty. I’m going to hope they can survive the move and possibly bloom next year 🙂 I love that you saw a hummingbird! I usually put my feeder out around May 1 and see them shortly after. I’d love if they came a bit early. You’re right, it’s crazy that we’re almost into May. Time needs to slow down during these nicer parts of the year!!

  4. What a great mixture of blessings. Those peonies are going to look lovely. Our neighbour has a yellow peony bush that’s well established and it’s in bloom now. I’m envious of your hummingbird. We have a variety of birds visit our feeders but nothing as special as that. Have a good weekend.

  5. Roses and peonies!! They’re beautiful!!

I love those impromptu visit from the kids and grandkids. They’re fun! And now Timothy has a radio kit.

    Have a good weekend!

  6. It’s always such a good feeling when roads get repaved, even if it’s a bit inconvenient while it’s happening. They’re working on the roads in our neighborhood too right now — lots of areas blocked off and not always easy to get to our house — but it will be so nice once it’s all done. We’re even getting new trees, so I’m curious to see how that will turn out.

Your peonies are really beautiful — such a lovely soft pink. And those other roses too! Mine aren’t that far along yet, so I’ll have to wait a bit longer. And seeing a hummingbird… that must be amazing. We don’t have them here, so I can only imagine. I hope you’ll be able to catch one in a photo someday! 😊

  7. Hi Barbara, sounds like you had a nice week with family and signs of nature. I love to watch hummingbirds. They can be loud for their little size! I hope Timothy has fun with his kit!

  8. Glad to see photos of your peonies because I’ve been noticing some in my neighborhood, but could NOT think of what they are called! I’d like to get some for my own yard, and now I’ll know what to look for. 🙂

  9. Your peonies and roses are so pretty! I love it when things begin to bloom all over!

I’m sure you’re very pleased to have your street repaved. I’m glad it was done so quickly.

That’s great that Gabrielle’s book is now on pre-order. I’ve read a couple of her time-crosser books. I recently realized how helpful preorders are for a publisher. And it must be gratifying to the author as well.

The only book I’ve read by Hannah Anderson is “Made for More”. I’m glad you found her book that you hadn’t read.

    Have a great week!

  10. Wow your rose bushes have so many blooms! It’s nowhere near that time yet over here. I’ll have to enjoy them through your pics. Can’t wait for the next Gabrielle Meyer book. I pre-ordered one of the series on Amazon and never got it so I’ll just wait till the bookstore gets them. That other book you found on your shelves sounds very interesting.
