I’m joining Susanne and friends at Living to Tell the Story to pause, share, and be thankful for the blessings of the week.
1. Camp leftovers. Jim had some burgers, potato salad, and baked beans leftover from the guys’ camping trip last week, so we enjoyed those for lunches. Then he also had some teriyaki chicken leftover that he grilled for dinner one night.
2. A light cooking week. Besides the camp leftovers, Jim was away Wednesday night for a men’s get-together at church, so I didn’t have to make dinner. Then another night, I was tired at dinner time and asked if we could get something out.
3. Getting shower curtains and liners cleaned. I saw some time ago either from Martha Stewart or Hints from Heloise (remember her?) that you could wash plastic (or vinyl?) shower curtain liners in the washing machine with towels, and the towels help scrub them plus keep them from bunching up. I usually use rags rather than towels so I can use bleach without messing anything up. We have hard water here with lots of minerals which leaves a white residue on things that’s hard to get off. The spray cleaners only go so far. So every now and then I’ll toss the curtain liners in the wash, and then wash the shower curtains in a separate load. Two of my shower curtains need to be ironed. So all of that, plus stretching to get them all off their hooks and back on again, took a chunk of time. But it was satisfying to get it done.
4. Killing a bug on the first try. That may sound silly. 🙂 But I do count it as a blessing! When I walked into my bedroom last night, I saw a centipede scurrying across the floor. They move really fast, so I didn’t know if I’d have time to grab some tissues and then smash him. I thought about just letting him go, but then I’d wonder where he was and when he was going to come back out. Jim is usually the designated bug killer (it’s a subdivision in our marriage vows under “love and cherish” 🙂 ). But he was asleep. For some reason, the centipede just stopped as I walked past him. So I got a couple of tissues and aimed for him, thinking he’d take off before I reached him (which is what usually happens). But I got him on the first try.
5. Some productive afternoons. I had gotten discouraged after a few days of not getting things done that I needed to. One or two of those days, I was sleepy and took a longer nap than I wanted. But I had several productive spurts this week and got most of my to-do list crossed off.
How was your week?

Your 4th blessing made me laugh!
I wash my liners about twice a year but i have the kind that’s not vinyl….it’s a material that’s soft and bleach can’t go it nor fabric softener so I use detergent and then hang it back in the tub to air dry. My shower curtains (I have seasonal ones) are all cotton so because i despise ironing I hang those up wet too and the wrinkles fall right out. Glad you got yours done! it’s a big chore. We also have hard water with lime deposits so i know the struggle.
How nice to have a light cooking week!
I have a long to do list for the next 2 days but have been struggling with the cervicogenic headaches and neck pain all week so hopefully today I’ll get some stuff done as the headache is just mild today.
I hope you have a good weekend.
I’ve tried hanging up my bathroom curtain wet after seeing you mention that before, but, unfortunately, the wrinkles didn’t come out. 🙂 But it’s not cotton, and it’s a short window, so maybe it didn’t have enough weight to pull the wrinkles out.
I’m so sorry about your headaches and neck pain. 😦 Hope you get some relief soon.
Sounds like a great week with many breaks from cooking going on in the kitchen! Especially considering the heat wave that has returned.
I understand your dilemma with the shower curtain liners. When I used the vinyl ones it was a chore I dreaded. In more recent years, I’ve gone to using the cloth liners so that job isn’t quite as dreaded now. Since I am only 5′ tall, I do still have to resort to standing on a step stool to take them down though. 🙂
And I totally understand how getting a bug on the first try is a blessing! Truly! I don’t have very good aim…especially when it comes to the fly swatter. Love those vows under “love and cherish”. That made me smile. 🙂
Hope your weekend is as lovely as your week has been. xx
I may try the cloth liners when I need to replace the ones I have. I am not good with a fly swatter, either! Jim has a battery-operated one that makes the most satisfying sound when it zaps a bug. 🙂
I hear ya — I too get frustrated when I don’t get the things done I’d planned to. This week I was going to go visit my mom. My sister then asked me to stop by her house and help sort things of my dad’s. I did not want to since I was already feeling behind. But, I sucked it up and prayed for a decent attitude. It got done and I’m glad. YAY for some light cooking days! I too love those. Leftovers are a treat. Glad you got the liner etc. cleaned. In our foyer, maybe 20 years ago I made 24′ long (yes that is correct) curtains for the 2 huge front windows. They’re nailed to valances up high. I see dust there a lot and it drives me nuts, but I really know of now way they’ll ever be clean. Sigh. Oh well.
Sometimes there are so many things to do, it can feel overwhelming. But it feels good to make progress on any one of them. Glad you made headway with your sister on your dad’s things.
24′ windows!!! Well, the good thing is, most people won’t see the dust up there. :). But I know what you mean–knowing it is there would bug me, too. Our last house had one room with a ledge along a high ceiling. I often thought it would look nice with some fake greenery on the ledge. But not only could I not reach it, even with a ladder, I knew it would get dusty.
Well done on getting the shower curtains done – we have glass doors and screens on ours so no curtains to worry about, but the hard water means the glass needs cleaning all the time. Sounds like a good week and well done for getting the bug. Have a good weekend.
I like like cooking weeks too. We had one this week (I should have mentioned that as a bonus fave).
Congrats on the bug adventure! I giggled at your mention of the wedding vows.
I hope you will have another productive week! Willow
I’d say that’s quite a feat taking care of the centipede issue with one try! Congratulations!
Great to have a week of less cooking responsibilities and all those camp left overs!
I seem to be more tired lately and so take naps and I’ve not accomplished as much as I’d like. I have a perpetual “to do” list going.
Thanks for the hint regarding cleaning the shower curtain liners. I’m going to try the liner/towel combo washing.
That you can was plastic curtains I knew, but that you have to iron them ? I just hang them up wet. Anyway that was in the past, because then we had glass doors and in in my castle I do nothing only playing princess (and pay)
No, we don’t iron the plastic. 🙂 We have a plastic liner that goes inside the tub/ shower, and we handle that up wet. But then there’s a decorative shower curtain that hangs outside the tub/shower. Mine need ironing. Some don’t.
We had the shower curtain door in one of our houses, but I didn’t like it. the groove where the door slid back and forth was constantly yucky.
I use old towels that I have for washing the shower curtain liner. I love when it’s done and all that white stuff is gone off of it. The curtain itself stays pretty clean because of the liner so I just wash that once a year as I rotate between two of them. Sometims a week of not having to cook is like a vacation. 🙂
I’m totally with you productive days — not feeling well or lethargic or lazy doesn’t (ultimately) feel as good as having a bunch of things done. Glad you tackled that challenging task of shower curtains and liners! We have really hard water here, too.
And having easy-peasy dinners are lovely faves. Glad you had several of those.
