Friday’s Fave Five

Friday's Fave Five

Fridays keep coming faster than ever! I’m thankful Susanne at Living to Tell the Story started this weekly practice of pausing to count blessings.

1. A ladies’ event at church. Our church has a “Girl Talk” event periodically, with the most recent one occurring last Saturday. The topic this time was self-concept and how the Bible tells us to think about ourselves. One woman spoke about the topic, with some opportunities to ask and answer questions. Then a lunch was catered. I had a few really good conversations with different ladies afterward–not on this topic, but on others. All in all, a good morning.

2. Voting and another good conversation. Our state and local primaries this week garnered a longer line that I have ever seen at our polling place for a non-presidential election. About half-way through a line that snaked around and across a high school gym, I found out the lady behind me taught at a school where I knew a teacher. “Do you know so-and-so?” led to a conversation that was not only enjoyable, but helped the waiting time fly by.

3. Good numbers. I had a six-month appointment with my primary care doctor to discuss my lab work. I was concerned about my blood sugar, because my own readings at home had been high. But my A1C was better than last time, just a hair above “normal.” And my thyroid level is back in normal range after being too low last time.

4. Going the extra miles(s). Ladies at church were asked to make food for a back-to-school breakfast to honor teachers at our Christian school. When I signed up to bring pigs-in-a-blanket, I asked Jim if he could take them over for me, as I would have had some difficulties getting them there. He agreed to, but had forgotten he had another obligation that morning. Mittu was contributing food as well, and had also been asked to help serve, so I asked Jason, and he graciously agreed to swing by and pick them up for me.

5. An evening with Timothy and a dinner I didn’t make. Jason and Mittu had a meeting one night this week and asked if Timothy could stay with us. They offered to bring dinner as well. We just hung out in the family room and talked most of the night. Timothy played some videos of when he was little–his voice was so cute and high!

Bonus: We went to lunch with Jason, Mittu, and Timothy at our favorite food court for the first time in a long time. I tried a new Asian place which, sadly, was a disappointment. But I love a bakery there which makes “cronuts”–a cross between croissants and donuts. The regular ones are about four or five inches square, but they also make mini ones, about two by two inches. I like the smaller ones because I like all their flavors–chocolate glazed, glazed, and cinnamon and sugar–and this way I can get more than one. And, more importantly, we enjoyed catching up with the kids.

How was your week?

  1. Fun on the cronuts — new term to me! Yay on that good a1c. I like your voting sticker! My daughter made pigs in blankets for a recent pitch in. They’re so good! It sounds like a good week and I hope your week to come is too πŸ™‚ Oh, and I love that you had a new baby in ’87.

  2. ooh a cronut!! i’d love that!!

    Your ladies gathering sounds nice.

How wonderful your son could run the food over to the church and that they brought dinner over one night when you watched Timmy.

Praise God for the improved lab results. I’m working hard on lowering my LDL as I do not want to go on a statin.

I hope you have a restful weekend.

  3. Spending time with family is the best. It’s fun to see the grandkids’ sections to their younger selves is fun.

    Cronuts sound yummy.

  4. Hi Barbara, the cronuts sound good, but I try to stay away from sweets. I just got my AIC back to the high end of normal and I want to keep it there. My cholesterol is aways high and I hate taking the meds. I am glad you had a nice week and have a nice weekend!

  5. I am thinking that what you experienced at your voting poll in regard to the number of people who were there is something that we will see across the entire country.

Glad that you had some good conversations with ladies at your church for the “Girl Talk” event. I do enjoy getting to know others better on such occasions.

Fun times with Timothy…and the rest of the family. He’s really growing up so quickly.

Thankful you had a good week, my friend. xx

  6. Those cronuts sound very good! They looked very flaky.

I’m relieved that your A1C improved. I’m a bit nervous to see what mine will be in a couple weeks.

I’ll bet it was fun to watch videos of Timothy in his younger years. Those are treasures.

I hate that I missed the women’s meeting at your church. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

    Have a great weekend.

  7. ‘Loved reading about the highlights of your blessings for the week, Barbara! We have women’s events each month of summer, similar to those your church hosts. I love these additional opportunities to get better acquainted with other women, besides the two semesters of Bible studies we do each year, September-April. / Congratulations on “just a hair above normal” A1C! I too have to watch my glucose level. ‘Trying to keep it under control with diet and exercise. So far so good!

  8. Sorry you had to wait in a long line, but glad that there was such good participation in your election. Sometimes those primary elections are very sparsely attended. How fun to watch videos of Timothy when he was younger. Our little guy loves doing that too. A win-win for everybody. πŸ™‚ My A1C has been in the questionable zone for awhile now. I’m always hoping that the next time it will be lower…

  9. The girl talk event sounds like it was a great time to get to know people. Sounds like you made the most of having to stand in line by strikingnup conversations. The lineup is good news that people are out casting their votes. Those cronuts look delicious. I’ve heard of them but never had one. So fun to watch videos of Timothy when he was little.

  10. Oh, I’m so pleased to hear your lab work has reflected your hard work to limit sweets. How nice to have had some good conversations with people in your women’s group as well as in lines.

So lovely that your son and his family are near by and you can participate in each other’s lives. A blessing indeed.

I love hearing from you. Leave comments here, and they will appear after I see and approve them. If you have trouble commenting, please let me know at my email address in the sidebar.
