Friday’s Fave Five

Friday's Fave Five

This Friday seemed to come around even faster than usual. I’m sharing the blessings of the week with Susanne’s weekly gratitude link-up at Living to Tell the Story.

1. Home from the hospital. My last FFF was written from a hospital room, but I was able to go home after lunch that day. This week I’ve been resting, taking more antibiotics, and recovering from the hospital stay. 🙂

2. Healing. The cellulitis appears to be completely gone. But there was a diagnosis on my charts and discharge papers that I have never seen before, and no one seems to be able to tell me where it came from. No doctor has ever told me I had it. I see my primary care doctor for a follow-up today with a list of questions.

Also, though normally antibiotics mess with my digestive system, that has not been as big a problem this time–surprising considering I was on a couple of different kinds in the hospital. I’ve had more yucky gut feelings the last couple of days–it may be catching up with me. But I am still taking probiotics to help combat that.

3. IB Guard. It’s kind of expensive, but it does help with stomach issues.

4. Sight-seeing by proxy. My oldest son, Jeremy, was in Chicago for the first time this week for his first-ever conference with his new job. He went a couple of days early to sight-see around the city and sent us some photos. I thought it was neat that he happened upon Moody Bible Institute in his walk around the city–not something he was looking for, but it was fun that he found it.

5. Low-sodium eating has not been fun, but it was recommended since I tend to retain fluid in my lower legs, which makes it easier to get cellulitis. It’s been a learning experience. Some things I suspected of being high-sodium have not been, but there has been a surprising amount of sodium in places I didn’t expect, like breads and cheeses. We’ve found that some of the no-salt flavorings have been good on salmon and chicken– not so much on potatoes and other vegetables. But I imagine I’ll get used to it after a while. And I am thankful there’s something definite I can do to help.

That’s it for this week. I hope yours has been good!

By the way, I am giving away a book here: Things We Cannot Keep by Amanda Cox.

  1. Barb,

Thanks so much for stopping by!! I like Sight Seeing by Proxy! I can not travel due to health issues so I do enjoy seeing pictures and hearing about other people’s trips… I hope you have a great weekend!!

  2. We don’t use salt on foods although hubby sprinkles a dash of it on the steamed spinach I make. I always look for the low sodium stuff but yes……cheese has a LOT of sodium that I didn’t know until Dave had his heart attack! Glad you are on the mend and that you found a product for your IBS. I used to get that around the time I went through menopause so doc thot it was my hormones. I’ve been fine ever since but then again, I do limit dairy products and the only dairy i consume is cheese.

YIKES! a doc put a diagnoses on your chart and never told you what it was?? I’m glad you’re going to your primary to get some answers!

I would LOVE to visit Moody Bible Institute. I’ve only been to the O hare airport once and we had no time before our next flight to visit the city. I do have friends who went to Wheaton though 🙂

    • The chart did say what the diagnosis was, but no doctor has ever told me I had it. If sending someone to my room with a folder was their way of informing me–that’s not a good way! A doctor should have come and discussed it with me and then left the folder for further information. The discharging doctor and my primary care doctor say that, based on scans and x-rays and such, I don’t have it. It doesn’t make much difference except if I have to go to that hospital again–they’ll have me down as having this diagnosis and will treat me accordingly unless I can convince them I don’t have it.

      • WOW that is nuts!! Yes the doc definitely should have told you in person! what ever “it” is, I’m glad your primary sees that you do NOT have it. He/she should call that hospital on your behalf and tell them to take it off your records!!

  3. I’m so glad to hear that your cellulitis is gone! What an answer to prayer…you’ve really had a struggle. I’m glad you are taking this week to rest up from being in the hospital. It’s definitely not a vacation when you are the patient there.

Good for you for you being on the alert when it comes to the amount of sodium in foods. I’m proud of you for doing what you can to help keep the fluid down in your legs.

  4. So glad to hear you are home and feeling better. I do hope you get the answers you need from your own doctor though. I never add salt to food because I have high blood pressure (well it would be high if I didn’t take medication) I’ve just got used to that. Enjoy the weekend.

  5. So pleased to hear you are recovering well. Hope you get an answer to that weird diagnosis. My friend’s husband had a stroke and was recovering in the hospital when a back procedure was planned. She was very concerned about it and asked only to discover that the hospital had gotten patients’ charts mixed up.

Glad you’ve found supplements and low-sodium diet to help some.

Chicago is a fun city to visit. Nice that you got to see some of it through Jeremy’s lenses.

  6. I am thankful with you that you are home from the hospital now. Surely, you are sleeping better. I hope you continue to heal and can deal with that new issue the bloodwork discovered.

New diets take time, I’m sure. I grew up in a salt-free diet home (due to my dad) so I don’t miss a lack of salt.

Moody Bible Institute is an unexpected and unassuming place in Chicago. The outside just looks like an office building (at least it did in the 1980s when I visited there). I’m sure an exploring walk (and train ride) was fun for Jeremy.

    Have a good week. Willow

  7. So grateful that this week you are back home! That is strange about the diagnosis that no one happened to mention to you! Things like that would bug me as well. Hoping you got some good answers today. I love impromptu discoveries like the one your son made in Chicago! Here is wishing you a wonderful weekend.

  8. Glad you are home and things are so much better. That’s a nice perk Jeremy has to travel for his job. I was in Chicago decades ago and remember it as a very picturesque city. Not sure what it’s like now.

I don’t usually add salt to my food or use a lot of it in cooking, but I don’t always look to see what is in already-prepared foods. I’m glad you are adjusting to it.

    Have a great weekend!
