Show and Tell Friday: Grandma’s Things

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home hosts “Show and Tell Friday” asking Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there’s a story behind your special something, that’s even better! If you would like to join in, all you have to do is post your “Show and Tell” on your blog, copy the post link, come over here and add it to Mr. Linky. Guidelines are here.

As many of you know, my mother-in-law just moved here to SC from ID and now lives in an assisted living facility just a few minutes from us. Since Mom was limited in how much could be carried on the plane, my sister-in-law has been sending us a few boxes at a time of Mom’s things.

One of the first boxes to arrive contained one of my all-time favorite pictures of my father-in-law, the flag from his funeral, and his VFW hat with several pins. My husband and youngest son put them together in my mother-in-law’s room like this:

Jim's Dad

I thought that made such a nice little vignette and added a touch of home to her room. It was her idea to put the cap on the picture frame like that — a nice touch!

Here are a few close-ups of some of the items:

Jim's Dad's VFW hat

Flag from the funeral and medals

Dad's Medals

Dad's medals

I don’t know who put the medals in the case with the flag, but I thought it was a good idea.

Also in the package, among other things, was this little cross-stitched piece I did for Jim’s mom several years ago:

Cross stitch for Grandma

And this is my work-in-progress for her room, almost done. All that is left is a little border.

Cross stitch for Grandma -- almost done!

I wanted to persevere and finish it tonight, but it was after 11 p.m. when I got to this stage and I felt I’d better lay it aside — when I work on things like this too late I tend to make more mistakes. Yellow is her favorite color. I am thinking of making one for myself in shades of pink. 🙂 It’s small — maybe 4 x 5 inches — so I thought I’d have it whipped up in a week or so, but it’s talking longer. The shape is a little warped from being stretched in the hoop. but it will straighten out when it is washed and pressed.

  2. This is one very HEART WARMING post Barbara. I love it. I love how y’all have the special things grouped together…it’s chilling –not because of ‘family gone’ but because it’s just family! I love to see things like this! It is a fabulous show n tell [sorry I didn’t get by last week, I was having trouble getting blogs to load for me]

My show n tell is about my favorite author today. Hope you can find time to stop by! And there is a link left at the bottom — for a gift for you.

    Happy Friday.

  3. Those are such precious items. I’m so glad they were able to be displayed for her.
I love the needlework, it’s very pretty.

  4. What a wonderful display with the photo and flag. And the needlework is lovely. I’m sure your mother-in-law will treasure it. All these special touches, I’m sure, will help make her move easier.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

  5. I loved seeing these things and they gave me an idea.
I am off to a quilt class this morning. It is a crazy quilt we are learning how to do. When we’re through we can finish it as a wall hanging or keep going. I want to incorporate some pictures on fabric and mementos into this quilt. I have a hankie that was my Mom’s and a nightgown with quilting and lace. I have several of Honey Bear’s ties from different places he has worked. I was wishing I had some fabric that was military related for my Dad. I wanted to use his Army picture on the quilt. I never saw a hat like that at his house but he was a member of the local VFW. I’m going to see if I can get one to use. If anyone knows of a source for Army ties or camoflauge hankies that would be good too. My son is supposed to be getting replacements of Daddy’s bars and medals for me.

  6. A nice touch to arrange the pictures like that. Cross stitching is beautiful work you have great patience for it!. Cute work!

  7. The display of her husbands military items is absolutely wonderful. He was quite the hero to have the Purple Heart. I love the way it was done and put together. I can only imagine how much it must mean to her to have it with her.

Nice to send the item you had done before and that you are doing a new one for her in just the color she loves.

  8. What a wonderful and thoughtful display of special treasures! Your needlework is coming along so nicely!

  9. It is so thoughtful to fix her room to make it feel like home. Leaving your home can be very traumatic and I know you helped immensely with the transition.

  10. Not to be nosey, do you happen to know how he
got the Purple Heart? My father got one in WWII
also a vet of Foreign War. I’ve researched his military
service, it is really neat to find out the story behind
    the medal/s. Jewelgirl

  11. Jewelgirl, I’ll have to ask my husband when he comes home, but I think there was some kind of explosion on the boat or sub he was on that led to the Purple Heart. I don’t know what the other medals are for — I would love to research that out.

  12. What a lovely tribute you did. I am sure she loves it.
I love your stitchery that is such a sweet present for her.
Thanks for stopping by my journey. I am still working on my blog so I appreciate the comments and letting me know how it looks. It does look different on different computers and so I am not sure how I like that. It seems to take a long time to load too. I know I get bored when one loads too long so I sure don’t want people to leave before a real visit.
Thanks again and come back soon. Don’t forget my Sat. doggie bloggie friends and also Then Sings My Soul.
    Have a Blessed Weekend.

  13. That is a wonderful display in honor of her husband – really special. I have done many cross stitch pieces, so know how hard it is to stop sometimes!

Thanks for coming by to visit my random show and tell!

  14. This is a great S&T! Your guys did a fabulous job with that vignette!

  15. I absolutely love this…what a sweet way for her to have her husband “near” and for all to remember him. What a handsome man he was…and a true war hero, too.

She is blessed to have such a caring family around her to ease her transition…your needlework is so lovely!

    Blessings,
    ~Tammy
