Friday’s Fave Five

Welcome to Friday’s Fave Five, hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, in which we can share five of our favorite things from the last week,  wonderful exercise in looking for and appreciating the good things God blesses us with. Here are a few highlights from the past week:

1. Christmas decorations. Jim doesn’t like to have them up right after Thanksgiving, but we thought we’d go ahead while Jeremy was here so he could participate and so we could get our family picture in front of the Christmas tree for Christmas cards. I kind of like having them up now. 🙂

We did a couple of new things outside. We have one of those big ugly utilities boxes in our yard, and the previous owners planted some little trees around it. I wanted to decorate the trees and Jim wanted to decorate the box itself.

As we were putting the lights up, we saw that the front of the box said not to plant anything around it. Ooops! It’s evidently been like that for a while and they haven’t said anything, so I guess it is ok. I asked Jim what to do  if some utility guy knocked on the door and says he needs to get to the box — he said he guessed we’d just have to unwrap it then. 🙂 😳

2. Christmas light show. Christmas Wonderland in Sevierville, TN has a place you can drive through and watch the Christmas lights blink and shimmer in time to a radio station they have you turn to. Pretty neat!

Most of the music is pretty good, some of it a little raucous for my tastes. But it was fun to see.

3. Christmas music! I like to wait til after Thanksgiving at least so as not to overshadow it. The Christian radio station I listen to started playing all Christmas music Dec. 1. I just got this new CD yesterday and have listened to it multiple times already.

4. Turkey Bone Soup. One of the best things in the days following Thanksgiving.

5. Harvest Loaf Cake— the first of the season! But not the last, as I am planning on making it again for a couple of upcoming Christmas events.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I love what you did with the box. So creative! I have most of my decorations up now too, but my husband can’t drum up enough Christmas spirit to do outside lights, so everything is just inside. 🙂

  2. I am not a big turkey bone soup fan. That was the meal that I had to sit at the table till bedtime because I wouldn’t eat it and then got spanked. :-/

HOWEVER, I share your love for Christmas music!! And I think the box and Christmas trees are really fun.

    We’re getting our tree tonight.

  3. I’ve heard so much about David Nevue, so I went and listened … and I have to have that CD! Love your decorations. So creative!

Mmm, that Harvest Loaf Cake! Have to try that. I’ll have you know, I have your Chicken Pot Pie in my oven right now. It’s become a big family favorite! Enjoy your week, Barbara!

  4. Funny, covering the utility box! Great idea!
We put up our new artificial tree last weekend. A first for us since we’ve always bought a real tree. I keep feeling the need to water the thing. Guess I’m having fresh-tree withdrawals! But our new and improved artificial tree is beautiful!

  5. =D When I was growing up, the rule was that we didn’t decorate the house for Christmas until December 1st.

That is the rule in my head.

However, this year we had to change things because I had other plans for that same night. So we decided that we’d make the first Sunday in Advent our decorating day. (First Sunday after Thanksgiving.) I liked that very much. It not only gives us a few extra days with the decorations in place to enjoy but it also kicks off the season of anticipating Christ’s birth. Very fun!

And I love the wrapped utility box! =D

  6. Great idea for the box! I don’t think the utility guy will mind too much waiting for you to unwrap the present 🙂

Christmas music is one of my favorite parts of the celebration, too.

  7. I love it that you decorated the trees and the utility box! I haven’t started listening to Christmas music yet, but, being in the choir, we’ve been singing it for a few months now 😉
