I know a few people who love winter. Very few. 🙂 It’s not my favorite season. The stretch from mid-February to the first signs of spring are the hardest for me.
To try to combat negative thoughts about this season, I looked for some inspiration–Bible verses, quotes, poems, and songs that share a better perspective on winter. I collected some to share with you.
Bible verses
He gives snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before his cold? He sends out his word, and melts them; he makes his wind blow and the waters flow. –Psalm 147:16-17.
Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! –Psalm 148:7-8.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. –Psalm 51:7:
“Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord: “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” –Isaiah 1:18.

Poems
One of the most famous poems set in winter is “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost, which can be read here.
An excerpt from “November” in A Child’s Calendar by John Updike:
The stripped and shapely

The ground is hard,
As hard as stone.
The year is old,
The birds are flown.
And yet the world,
Nevertheless,
Displays a certain

An excerpt from “Winter Morning” by Alexander Pushkin:
The snow below the bluish skies,
Like a majestic carpet lies,
And in the light of day it shimmers.
The woods are dusky. Through the frost
The greenish fir-trees are exposed;
And under ice, a river glitters.
“Winter-Time” by Robert Louis Stevenson
Late lies the wintry sun a-bed,
A frosty, fiery sleepy-head;

“The Winter Evening” is a long poem that’s part of an even longer poem in six “books” titled “The Task” by William Cowper. Here are just a few lines from it:
Songs
There are fun songs, like “Winter Wonderland,” Let It Snow,” and “Snow” from the film White Christmas. Then there are these meaningful ones.

“The Snow Lay on the Ground”
“See, Amid the Winter Snow”
“Whiter Than Snow”
“Winter Song,” also seen as “Tis Winter Now.” This one was new to me. The author was Samuel Longfellow, brother of Henry Wadsworth. I wouldn’t agree with his general theology, but this song was lovely.
Are you feeling more kindly disposed to winter now? I’m still eager for it to get over and for spring to come. But winter has its beauties as well.
Stray Thoughts 
Winter is very different here in the Lowcountry of SC. When we lived in Virginia, we had four distinct seasons. Here in Mount Pleasant, we see mostly warm and hot. However, we are having an actual winter this year. A bit of snow last week caused schools and businesses to close. Today is rainy and 50 degrees. Have a blessed day! 🙂
When we were younger, snow days meant building snowmen and drinking hot chocolate. Now they cause concern for road conditions and freezing pipes. I guess that’s the price of being an adult. 🙂 Hope you have a blessed day, too!

I’m glad you do–and that you’ve gotten a good dose of it this year. 🙂 I don’t mind when it’s sunny and we can get out and around. I’m pretty much housebound when it’s slippery outside due to balance issues. But I prefer spring and fall, when the temperatures are more moderate.
Barbara, thank you so much for the Scripture verses, songs, poems, and quotes that have to do with winter. I enjoyed them all. I’ve been going through the book of Psalms with Spurgeon’s commentary this year and just last week in his commentary he mentioned how God is the power behind our weather. It’s one of the things that turned me from a negative thought about all of our ice and snow to seeing the beauty in God’s power over nature.
And “Winter Evening” that you shared gives such a beautiful picture of coziness and rest…such a beautiful painting with words.

It’s definitely a challenge and I enjoyed taking a break and reading through all your tips/thoughts/goodies! It occurs to me that winter is similar in many ways to times of suffering in our lives … we have to endure it, and it makes us more appreciate spring afterwards. Several years ago we were at an 80th birthday for a neighbor who’d moved here years ago from CA. He was giving a little speech, and he teared up saying how he enjoyed all the seasons here and seeing how nature changed throughout the year. That was a nice thought. I love “In the Bleak Midwinter” 🙂
Yes–I have seen some poems and devotionals talking about suffering in terms of winter. There are a lot of parallels.
I like having distinct seasons, too. I grew up in southern TX, where we didn’t have autumn colors. The leaves just died and fell off. 🙂 I didn’t see snow until I was ten or eleven.
What a beautiful post! I wish I had thought of this idea. I personally love winter (as long as I don’t have to drive in snow or on ice!) and find myself really embracing it this year even though we’ve had lots of snow and subzero temperatures. Thanks so much for the winter inspiration. I loved it.

I need all the help I can get this time of year too! We used to vacation in the south in February a lot and I felt like that made my spring fever even worse! I try to just focus on the beauty of the snow and remind myself it won’t last forever.
We have very mild Winters here in Australia compared to yours Barbara, so I actually enjoy our Winters.
But we have extremely hot Summers, which aren’t so enjoyable.
