Welcome to The Week In Words, where we share quotes from the last week’s reading. If something you read this past week inspired you, caused you to laugh, cry, think, dream, or just resonated with you in some way, please share it with us, attributing it to its source, which can be a book, newspaper, blog, Facebook — anything that you read. More information is here.
Here are some that caught my eye this week, with little commentary:
You’ll see why I like this one from a friend’s Facebook. 🙂
“The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotations.” — Benjamin Disraeli
From Mennonite Girls Can Cook:
“Every house where love abides
And friendship is a guest,
Is surely home, and home sweet home,
For the heart can rest.”
~Henry Van Dyke~
I want my home to be a place where the heart can rest.
From another friend’s Facebook
“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.”
And from yet another friend’s Facebook, advice from a friend of hers while recuperating from a serious condition:
“Give yourself time to completely heal without guilt for taking the time.”
If you ever have had to heal from something, you know about feeling either guilty or discouraged because you can’t do things that need to be done. But healing takes time.
From Keep a Quiet Heart by Elisabeth Elliot:
The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances.
And finally, from Angela Hunt’s The Note:
Some people…accept the “trappings” of belief without ever actually embracing the belief itself.
Sad but true. One of my prayers for each of us in my family, myself first of all, is that we would be genuine believers and not just going through the motions of Christian culture.
If you’ve read anything that particularly spoke to you that you’d like to share, please either list it in the comments below or write a post on your blog and then put the link to that post (not your general blog link) in Mr. Linky below. I do ask that only family-friendly quotes be included.
You have a great collection, as always. Thanks for the enrichment!
I especially like that fine distinction between trappings of belief vs. belief.
All wonderful quotes again.
These two really hit home:
“Give yourself time to completely heal without guilt for taking the time.”
I need to apply it emotionally as well as physically…
and
“The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances. ”
Thanks, Barbara, for the food for thought to get my week started off well.
Thanks for making that point about emotional healing taking time as well. I had meant to say that but forgot.
I, too, love “The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances. ” It’s so easy to think that all I need is a different set of circumstances–but I’m thankful that Christ in me is the secret to get me through EVERY set of circumstances, even the terribly difficult ones.
I like that quote from Elisabeth Elliot!
the trappings of belief—easy to get cought up in that and I have been challenged to really live what I believe lately.
I like the one of my home being where the heart can rest. Excellent 🙂
I love the Elisabeth Elliot quote! How I need to let Christ be seen in me, rather than trying to get myself into a different set of circumstances. So timely for me today!
What is it about quotes? Why do we love them??? I think your very first quote by Disraeli answers my question:
“The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotations.” — Benjamin Disraeli
Here’s my contribuiton to your meme for the week:
“Beloved, sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to His Word is a choice. Some things will not get done. Some people will not understand. But Jesus said it was the one needful thing—the one thing which could never be taken away.”~ Kay Arthur
Blessings!
Oh, I really like:
I want my home to be a place where the heart can rest.
Oh, Barbara! These are ALL great this week! I do especially like the Elizabeth Elliot quote. And genuine belief – that is a really good thing to pray for!
Lots of great quotes – my favorite is the one on perseverance.
I would have to copy all of “Laugh Your Way to Grace.” I am loving every line of that book!
I really enjoy Angela Hunt’s books…I have The Canopy on my bookshelf right now and will get to it after I read this one by Charles Martin…Have you read anything by him? I have been sewing most of the morning, have the Gardener’s Journal blocks all done and most of it put together then it is time to cut out the borders and attach them….I haven’t picked out backing or binding yet.
I look forward to seeing your studio when you get it all set up.
