Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Funky

(Friday’s “Show and Tell” post is below this one.)

I didn’t know the word “funky” had so many varied definitions until I was trying to find something for this photo hunt! I’ve always thought of it as “mod,” “cool,” or “retro,” so that’s how I’ll use it today.

Since I was a child of the 60s and in high school and college in the 70s, I would have had a lot of “funky” things in that sense over the years — but I’ve gotten rid of it all. The closest I could come is this picture from a few years ago of the boys trying to make their poor, patient doggy, Suzie, look “cool.”

Suzie looking cool

And….she can be “funky” by one of the other definitions as well in sometimes having a bad smell. 🙂

I sure missed the photo hunt last week! With a wide-open theme like “creative,” that would’ve been such fun. But it was a busy week, and I just couldn’t come up with anything…creative.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Shadow(s)

Wow, this was a hard one! I didn’t have time to look, but I couldn’t think of any pictures we had that had shadows, and the time I thought about taking a picture outside at home, it was overcast or the sun was too far down. I tried taking some of Jesse doing hand shadows. At first I was disappointed because I couldn’t get the right balance of focus and light. but when I downloaded them and experimented a little bit, some of them came out at least well enough to make out. 🙂

For this one, I set up some of Jesse’s Heroscape figures. The picture didn’t look like it came out at all until I fiddled with the light settings after I downloaded them, and voila, there they were! It’s a little grainy, but it’s kinda cool.

Updated to add:

I was thinking of this poem earlier in connection with this theme, but then forgot about it when posting at first. Amy Carmichael was a missionary in India for most of her adult life. The inspiration for this poem came as a result of the heat in India and the refreshing coolness to be found in the shadow, plus the story of the Israelites being led by the pillow of fire by night and the pillar of cloud by day in the book of Exodus. This poem would look nice with a picture of a nice shady place, which I don’t have. 🙂 But there are several pictures of such shade on other photo hunters’ entries for today.

I Follow Thee

Shadow and coolness, Lord,
Art Thou to me;
Cloud of my soul, lead on,
I follow Thee.
What though the hot winds blow,
Fierce heat beats up below?
Fountains of water flow —
Praise, praise to Thee.

Clearness and glory, Lord,
Art Thou to me;
Light of my soul, lead on,
I follow Thee.
All through the moonless night,
Making its darkness bright,
Thou art my heavenly Light —
Praise, praise to Thee.

Shadow and shine art Thou,
Dear Lord, to me;
Pillar of cloud and fire,
I follow Thee.
What though the way be long,
In Thee my heart is strong,
Thou art my joy, my song —
Praise, praise to Thee.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Sweet

There is this kind of sweet:

And then there is this kind….

…a 5 lb. bag of M&Ms. We used them to put into favors at our Ladies’ Luncheon. We also had some printed in words that matched our theme (“The Heart of the Matter”) and coordinated with our theme colors (pink and chocolate brown):

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Shiny

This picture of Jason was taken just before he left for the Junior-Senior banquet his senior year of high school, a Really Big Deal here. He had washed his car and gotten it all clean and shiny and gotten himself all spiffed up in his tux, so he was “shining,” too. 🙂

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Hair

I didn’t think I had a picture for today’s theme other than various fuzzy bedhead pictures from when the kids were little, til I remembered this:

image0.jpg

I was working at a fabric store and we were asked to dress up if we worked on Halloween. Though we as a family don’t “celebrate” Halloween, I didn’t feel there was any harm to dress up. And since we worked at fabric store — we were supposed to make something. So this is my Raggedy Ann outfit. I added red circle cheeks later.

I had to wing it to to make the “hair” by making a circle of white fabric, making a casing for elastic around the edge, and cutting a lot of red yarn, then sewing rows of yarn in circles around the white fabric. Then I added elastic to the casing.

It held up well through the years, even being tossed in the washing machine. All three of my kids had a “clown day” in elementary school, I think in K-5 or first grade, and they used the hair with the clown costume I made for them.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Shoes

I’ve been pondering this week’s theme for days. None of us has any interesting-looking shoes. Ideas I had for what would have made neat shots were hindered by the fact that I didn’t have access to the shoes I was thinking of (like Barbie doll shoes from my childhood). All the boys’ shoe sizes are too close to the same size to make a line-up from oldest to youngest look interesting. All I could come up with was this: a button of a Victorian boot on a piece of jewelry I made. I love the way it looks but I am so glad we don’t wear those these days!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Art

My middle son, Jason, enjoyed drawing for a few years and took one art class in high school. Personally I think he is pretty talented, but I might be a little biased. 🙂 Unfortunately he hasn’t done much with it since.

This is his drawing of Suzie, our dog, and the photograph he drew from:

cimg0723.jpg

This is a drawing he did for the South Caroline Christian School Association Fine Arts Fair. He got a “Superior” rating and a $250 scholarship.

cimg0738.jpg

It’s a little hard to see the line distinctions from the picture, but it is a black and white dog curled up.

This set of prints is from one of my favorite artists, Paula Vaughn. Most of the things on my walls are just little things I picked up here and there. This was an investment. 🙂 We had moved to GA and for the first time had a separate living room and family room. I was looking for some prints for the living room and loved these, but thought they were too much. But then my husband bought them for me I think for my birthday (nice man!)

Needle arts are some of my favorite kinds of art. This is a cross-stitched piece done by one of my sisters, Leigh Ann, from a pattern based on a Paula Vaughn print.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Colorful

I was drawing a complete blank as to what to post for this week’s theme until my husband came to my rescue with this suggestion. I had sent him this card either when we were dating or in our early married years. We’ve sent each other scores of cards in two years of dating and 27 years of marriage, but there are some that are favorites, and this was a favorite of his. The funny thing is that he has been working in coloring matching first for automotive carpet fibers for a number of years and now for plastic colorants — we had no idea when I first sent this card that he would be working with color. He has this card on top of his filing cabinet now. I think in his old office he had it on his bulletin board.

And Jesse, making a “rainbow cake” for a contest. Our church has “family camp” on Wednesday nights during the summer, with a fellowship afterward with different types of foods each week. On certain nights, like cake or pie nights, there is a contest for different age levels, and this was Jesse’s entry for the kids’ division. If I remember, you just make a regular yellow cake mix, then divide it into 3 parts and put different food coloring into each bowl; then pour each bowl into a bundt pan, and as it rises and bakes it looks like a rainbow. I am not sure why Jesse’s expression is such as it is. Maybe he is protecting his creation from predators before the contest. 🙂
