Blue Monday: Houses

My new blog friend Smiling Sally hosts a Blue Monday in which we can post about anything blue.

I didn’t realize until we moved to this house and I was unpacking boxes that I had several little houses, so I grouped them all together. Many of them are blue or have blue on them.

House plaque

House prints

The top one of these says, “Treasured friends: time only makes them more dear.” The bottom one says

Let’s visit — just come in and sit.
Our homes warmed by your presence — so linger a bit.

This is one of my favorites. I love this saying. I think I got both of these at a craft show.

Home is where the heart is

Cute little house

This is a house-shaped potholder.

I also found somewhere along the way this cute little house. It’s supposed to be one of those things where you put a small candle in the back and something scented that melts in a little impression above it — but scented things like that give me a headache, so I just enjoy looking at the little house.

And this is a cookie jar — although, since there was no room on the counters for it, I put it on this baker’s rack, but the top is a little heavy and I was afraid of the kids dropping it, I haven’t put cookies in it for a while. But I think I could now.

And, of course, behind all of these you see my kitchen wallpaper, which has blue and pink in it.

Susanne’s Friday Fave Five

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story has begun a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share out five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details. I have seen it the past few weeks and thought it was a neat idea, but my mind went blank as to what to share. But this week I was thinking ahead!!

1. Days off from school. Jesse has been off since Wednesday because the school faculty and administration are at a conference. Jim took the same days off from work, too.

2. Not having to set the alarm clock. One life’s little pleasures.

3. That we didn’t go to Charleston, SC, or camping this week. Those were two of our options for these days off, but it is rainy here today, and Charleston is set to have high winds and rain this weekend, so I am glad we didn’t choose either of those. Our third option was redoing Jesse’s room, a project that has been needed since we moved here ten years ago, but it had to wait its turn.

4. Finally getting this carpet removed from my house:

Ugly carpet!!

Isn’t that the most hideous carpet you’ve ever seen? It has been in Jesse’s room since we moved here (poor guy!) and was just one of many projects needing to be done at this house. It’s actually coming up today! When we redid Jason’s room, we took his the old red shag carpet (shudder!) in his room and found beauitful hardwood floors underneath that didn’t need any kind of retouching or refinishing, so we are hoping that is the case in Jesse’s room, too. I am sure Ill have more on the room redo project later on.

5. Cooler weather. One of my favorite features of fall. It’s been lovely this week!

I saw this over at Smiling Sally‘s and thought it looked like fun. I thought about saving it for our anniversary — but that’s not til December, and I didn’t want to hold it for that long.

1. He’s sitting in front of the TV; what is on the screen?
CNN or news of some type most often.

2. You’re out to eat; what kind of dressing does he get on his salad?
Thousand Island.

3. What’s one food he doesn’t like?
Peas.

4. You go out to the bar. What does he order?
We don’t go to bars…

5. Where did he go to high school?
Twin Falls, Idaho.

6. What size shoe does he wear?
Ummm….I think an 11?

7. If he was to collect anything, what would it be?
Microscopes. He has a small collection now of various styles and sizes, but he buys and sells most of them on e-bay.

8. What is his favorite type of sandwich?
Does a hamburger count?

9. What would this person eat every day if he could?
Not sure there…he likes variety.

10. What is his favorite cereal?
Reese’s. Yep, they make a chocolate and peanut butter cereal.

11. What would he never wear?
A leisure suit again, I hope, though he did when we were dating and they were “in.” I liked it ok then.

Dating days

12. What is his favorite sports team?
Don’t think he has one…he has never been big into sports.

13. Who will he vote for?
He would prefer McCain to Obama but is not entirely happy with him. I am not sure if he has decided to vote for McCain or an independent.

14. Who is his best friend?
I like Sally’s first answer: That would be me! 🙂 But his best friend since high school is named Steve.

15. What is something you do that he wishes you wouldn’t do?
Actually he doesn’t say much about things I do that bug him. And I know that’s not because of a lack of bad habits or faults on my part. 🙂

16. How many states has he lived in?
4

17. What is his heritage?
I used to know this…I think primarily British.

18. You bake him a cake for his birthday; what kind of cake?
Boston Cream Pie.

19. Did he play sports in high school?
Basketball for a time. I’m not sure, but I don’t think he played anything else.

20. What could he spend hours doing?
Various things on the computer.

Blue Monday

My new blog friend Smiling Sally hosts a Blue Monday in which we can post about anything blue.

Long-time readers will have seen this before, but this is a sampler I made several years ago. When we were first married I was more into Early American style decorating, and somewhere around that time I had read the Little House on the Prairie books, where Mary and Laura learned to make samplers in their first forays into needlework, so I really wanted to make a sampler for our home. Patterns for them were very popular at the time.

Sampler

I have it hanging beside what is supposed to be an antique raisin rack (used to dry grapes til they became raisins) decoupaged with a Burpee seed label (I didn’t decoupage it — I bought it that way).

Raisin rack

This has more of a faded blue in it, but I like it, and it seemed in keeping with the old-fashionenedness of the sampler.

These both hang in our family room

Thursday Thirteen: Commercials from my childhood

Linda’s post about the Rice-a-Roni commercial the other day set off a stream of memories of commercials that were popular when I was a kid. So I thought I’d see if I could find 13 of them, and I hope this many YouTube videos doesn’t crash all of WordPress! 🙂

1. No More Rice Krispies

2. Mr. Whipple: “Please don’t squeeze the Charmin”

3. Madge and Palmolive Liquid: “You’re soaking in it.”

4. He likes it! Mikey likes it!

5. Have It Your Way…at Burger King

6. The Frito Bandito

7. Is it live, or is it Memorex?

8. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking

9. Where’s the beef?

10. My bologna has a first name..

11. Oh, I’d love to be an Oscar Meyer Weiner…

12. Brylcreem: A little dab’ll do ya

13. And of course, the Rice-a-Roni jingle, the “San Francisco Treat.”

Works For Me Wednesday: Leftover Rice

I haven’t done a WFMW in a while, having run through my whole repertoire of tips long ago. But when I was making lunch today I realized I had an unshared tip I could share.

The condensed version: leftover rice can be frozen.

What would you use frozen rice in? Well, I often make canned soups for lunch in the winter when I am eating alone, but most of them are too soupy for me, so I like to add a bit of leftover rice or some frozen corn or leftover tomato soup, etc. I especially like adding the leftover rice but didn’t always have any on hand when making soup. And when I had leftover rice on hand it often grew green fuzzies in the frig because I had other plans for lunch. So once I put some leftover rice in a plastic zipped bag in the freezer, then took it out and microwaved it about 20-30 seconds, just enough to loosen it up from the solidness it freezes into, added it into my soup, and it worked beautifully.

Now I often make a little extra rice in order to have some leftover to freeze.

You could also mix it in a bit of leftover casserole or cover it with a little leftover gravy.

You can find Works For Me Wednesday most weeks at Rocks In My Dryer.

A Laborious Meme

Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer is hosting a meme for Labor Day about labor — the kind that results in delivering a child.

Moms do like to talk about labor. I think it is kind of like men’s war stories. It’s something we were afraid of, faced, and survived, and each one is unique…at least for most of us. I did have one friend who said that every time when she was dilated 3 cm, this happened, and then when she was dilated 6 cm, that would happen, etc. I thought it must be nice to have such a regular system! Each one of mine was different.

Here are the questions:

How long were your labors?

Kid #1, about 9 hours.
Kid #2, about 6 hours
Kid #3, 2 weeks. 8 1/2 hours, I think.

How did you know you were in labor?

Kid #1, water breaking.
Kid #2, I was expecting my water to break since that had happened with #1, so it took a while for it to dawn on my that I was having contractions. They had to break the water manually later on.
Kid #3, when the drugs kicked in. I had to be induced: I’d had little things going on for a couple of weeks, but labor just wouldn’t start, and he was 13 days overdue.

Where did you deliver?

Kids #1 and 2, in a very small hospital on the campus of my alma mater. Very cozy.
Kid #3, in a women’s hospital due to his size and overdueness.

Drugs?

I had to have Pitocen with each one as my labor would peter out, a little earlier with each one. No epidurals — I know people rave about them, but I knew a couple of people who had had problems with them, and I was kind of afraid of them. Just had a “local” shot with each one just before delivery.

C-section?

No, thankfully.

Who delivered?

Beloved Christian doctors. We were with the same practice in the same town for all three. One doctor delivered #1 and 3 while the other delivered #2.

Just a little funny story in connection with Jesse’s birth: He ended up being 12 lbs. I don’t know how: I did not have gestational diabetes with him as I had with Jason and my weight gain was the most moderate of the three (and all the rest of his life he has been the skinniest of us all!). He was born in a women’s hospital where the only children patients were newborns, so they only had newborn diapers, but those wouldn’t fit him, so someone had to go out and buy the next size. When Jim went to the hospital cafeteria, he overheard one hospital employee saying to the other, “Did you hear we had a 12-pounder today?”

Shannon has set up a Mr. Linky if you’d like to read other labor stories or link up to your own.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook

Outside My Window...it’s a little overcast. Hopefully we’ll get some much-needed rain today.

I am thinking… about the mixed emotions I have with school starting (first full day today). I am glad to have some quiet hours back in my day, but I really do like the more relaxed pace of summer. We probably do better with a little more structure in our schedule, but when all of a sudden there is a folder full of details to tend to, dates to mark, papers to read and sign and return, etc., etc., I feel like I am swatting a swarm of mosquitoes mentally.

I am thankful… that the Lord’s mercies are new every morning.

From the kitchen
…I am thinking about stromboli tonight. I need to get back into regular menu planning.

I am wearing… a lavender plaid seersucker dress.

I am creating… hopefully a little more order, hopefully curtains this week. I am still working on my cross stitch piece as well, though I laid it aside for a few evenings to catch up on things like clipping coupons and going through cooking magazines and some of my other “relaxing in the evening” tasks.

I am going… out to lunch with a good friend tomorrow to one of our favorite restaurants which had closed but recently reopened.

I am reading…I finished To Kill a Mockingbird Saturday (review coming soon!) and I am still working on Simple Gifts by Lori Copeland. I have been wanting to reread To the Golden Shore about America’s first missionary, Adoniram Judson, so I think I will start that next.

I am hoping… that a friend is able to get back into school this semester…either that the Lord will provide the finances or the business office will be merciful (I had this on last week’s daybook. but I am still hoping and praying!)

I am hearing… my husband typing and another neighbor hammering (but a different one than the one who was hammering last week!).

Around the house…I need to catch up on the to-do list leftover from last week. 🙂

One of my favorite things… is eating out. 🙂

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week: actually on of the first things I need to do today is make a list of things I need to do and then prioritize and strategize. With school starting, our schedule is a little different, and my mind is swirling with things that need to be done and things I’d like to get done. For some reason I am having a great urge to clear out “stuff” (maybe because my my living room closet and a couple of kitchen cabinets are overflowing?), but before I tear into that I need to look at the big picture.

Here is picture thought I am sharing…from my birthday. The first one is during the “Happy Birthday” serenade in which Jesse is waxing operatic. 🙂 I am looking at Jason — I am not sure what he was doing or why I have that expression!

Birthday serenade

Here Jim and his mom are listening to Jason play the piano. I just like the way they look here.

Edited to add: I’m sorry I forgot to mention that my oldest son Jeremy took these pictures. He did a great job!

Thirteen thoughts about my birthday

1. I turn 51 today!

2. That sounds so much older than 50! I’m still trying to figure out how I got there!

3. While standing in line somewhere I saw a headline saying, “50 is the new 30.” Sounds good to me!

4. This is a good week for birthdays: Barb‘s was a few days ago and Janet‘s was yesterday.

5. I got offered a senior citizen’s discount at Jack in the Box again today. 😕 Actually, they didn’t even offer — just rang it up, and I had to correct them. Then the cashier said, “How old are you?” Not exactly tactful! My husband thinks I should have just taken the discount.

6. We get to eat out at Outback tonight! Love the food — not crazy about the darkness and music. We only get there maybe once a year.

7. Barb had some good thoughts about reaching the over-50 mark here. My favorite line: “It doesn’t matter how many years you actually live. What matters is what you do with those years and how you impact the people who will live beyond you.”

8. My favorite cake is chocolate (preferable devil’s food) with chocolate icing (preferably fudge chocolate).

9. I miss talking to my mom on special days.

10. I could join the Bloggers Over 50 Blogroll. I could have last year, but I wanted to wait til I was over 50 just as a matter of principle. 🙂

11. Last year I posted some perks of being older and some neat quotes about aging.

12. One of my favorite “older” quotes not listed there is the following:

“It is love in old age, no longer blind, that is true love. For love’s highest intensity doesn’t necessarily mean its highest quality. Glamour and jealousy are gone; and the ardent caress…is valueless compared to the reassuring touch of a trembling hand. Passersby commonly see little beauty in the embrace of young lovers on a park bench, but the understanding smile of an old wife to her husband is one of the loveliest things in the world.” Booth Tarkington

A quiz and a meme

I saw this over at Joyful Days:

You Are Palatino

You consider yourself to be creative and artistic.

And you’d like everyone else to know it!

You take design and aesthetics seriously.

You like everything in your life to be unique and beautiful – but never gaudy!

What Font Are You?

I don’t think I had ever noticed this font — I had to go try it out just to see what it was like. I like it! The last couple of lines are true of me, but I don’t consider myself really artistic.

I saw this meme over at Brenda’s and Melli‘s and thought it looked like fun. I won’t tag anyone, but let me know if you do it — I’d enjoy reading your answers.

What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now? Dove unscented for sensitive skin.

Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator? No. I’m not a big watermelon fan.

What would you change about your living room? I’d like to change it’s dimensions or size so as to be able to get a chair in there. We have a couch and a loveseat, which is ok when it’s just us, but that is usually where we have company, and then there aren’t enough seats to go around.

Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty? Clean — I forgot to have Jeremy unload it last night, and there are dirty dishes in the sink that need to go in.

What is in your fridge? The usual basic stuff — milk, OJ, condiments, etc. — plus diet Pepsi and leftover Mexican food from Jason’s birthday dinner out last night.

White or wheat bread? Wheat.

What is on top of your refrigerator? Water bottles and more diet Pepsi.

What color or design is on your shower curtain? A white and black striped lighthouse on a blue background.

How many plants are in your home? None, at least not real ones. I am guilty of negligent planticide. I do have some fake flower arrangements, though.

Is your bed made right now? Not yet.

Comet or Soft Scrub? Soft Scrub. I knew a lady once who had serious trouble with her eyes when the powdery Comet got into them as she was shaking the can.

Your closet organized? Pretty well.

Can you describe your flashlight? We have several. A couple of plain basic ones in yellow and red, a camouflage one (that I bought for Jesse for camp one year — probably not the greatest idea to take to camp in the woods, huh? But he didn’t lose it). Plus a big yellow industrial looking one that Jim likes to use.

Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home? Has to be glass.

Do you have iced tea made in a pitcher right now? Yes.

If you have a garage, is it cluttered? We don’t have a garage — I wish we did. We do have a very cluttered shed.

Curtains or blinds? Both.

How many pillows do you sleep with? One.

Do you sleep with any lights on at night? One nightlight in the bathroom that shines a little into our room.

How often do you vacuum? That’s one of my kids’ chores, so I don’t do it often myself.

Standard toothbrush or electric? Standard.

What color is your toothbrush? Pink. We have this odd thing — some of the family members can’t remember what their toothbrushes look like — they just remember where theirs is on the toothbrush rack. So I always get a girly color so there is no mistaking which one is mine.

Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch? Yes, though the design is kind of worn down.

What is in your oven right now? Nothing. It had birthday cake yesterday!

Is there anything under your bed? A flat storage box container flattened gift boxes, tissue paper, gift bags, and a few flat pieces of wrapping paper. And dust.

Chore you hate doing the most? Either cleaning toilets or dusting.

What retro items are in your home? I don’t think I have any — it would depend on how you define it.

Do you have a separate room that you use as an office? Sort of. This house has what the previous owners called a sunroom, and they kept a hot tub and some exercise equipment in it. We don’t have a hot tub, but we do have a treadmill in here — plus two desks and computers and bookshelves and a storage cabinet and some boxes and what’s supposed to be a project table that is covered with stuff I need to sort through. So I think of this as more of a hodgepodge room.

How many mirrors are in your home? 1 in each bathroom and in 3 bedrooms, so that makes 5. Plus there are 3 small decorative heart-shaped ones in the kitchen.

Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home? No, but if I did I wouldn’t tell the Internet!

What color are your walls? Living room: Wallpaper on top with beige background and pink roses, sage green on bottom. Kitchen: Rose wallpaper in pink and blue and white. Hallway: Beige-ish wallpaper. Family room: Just off-white. My bedroom: Pink. Jeremy’s bedroom: Wood paneling. Jason’s bedroom: Dark blue. Jesse’s bedroom: Light blue. Upstairs bathroom: Pecan Sandie (I just love the name of that paint). Downstairs bathroom: Southwest style wallpaper in beige, rust, and gray (NOT my style at all, but not high on the priority list of needed improvements). Office/sunroom/hodgepodge room: diagonal wood paneling (strange, huh?) And that’s probably much more than you ever wanted to know.

Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home? Do you think I’d tell the whole world? 🙂

What does your home smell like right now? Um…I don’t detect any smells right now.

Candle scent? I can’t do candles — they give me a headache and the really heavily scented ones make me feel like I can’t breathe.

What kind of pickles (if any) in your fridge? Sweet pickle relish, which we mainly only use for potato salad and tuna salad. We’re not really into pickles — I usually pick them off hamburgers

What color is your favorite Bible? Maroon.

Ever been on your roof? Not me! I get dizzy just thinking about it.

Do you own a stereo? Yes.

How many TVs do you have? 3.

How many house phones? 4.

Do you have a housekeeper? Ha!

What style do you decorate in? I’m somewhere between country and Victorian.

Do you like solid colors in furniture or prints? Prints, depending on what’s on the walls. Prints don’t show stains as much. 🙂

Is there a smoke detector in your home? At least 4.

What are the items in your house which you’d grab if you only could make one quick trip?
Hmmm…it would be between the computer and old photo albums.
