Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Heavy

Theme: Heavy | Become a Photo Hunter

I was at a loss coming up with something for today’s theme at first. Then I remembered that we had pictures of an elephant at a zoo — but then I thought of this picture and decided on it.

Whale show at Seaworld

This is from a whale show at Seaworld in Florida in April of 2002. We had gone down during spring break Jeremy’s senior year to check out Clearwater Christian College (loved it, but they didn’t have the major he wanted). We took a day to visit here. We had been to a similar place in CA once when Jesse was just a baby, and I had always wanted to go back when he was old enough to remember it, so I am glad we got the chance.

Whales are certainly heavy, but they glide through the air with such ease! So graceful!

I didn’t notice this when I first scanned the picture, but the whale on the left has a man standing on his nose (or snout? whatever you call a whale’s nose). That gives you some idea of how big these creatures are.

Jeremy and Jesse were down in the “splash zone” and were disappointed when they didn’t get wet at all — til the whale made one last pass around the tank at the end and flipped water on their section with its tail!

I am more of a homebody than a goer and a doer, but this is something I would love to see again — this and the dolphins.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Old-fashioned

Theme: Old-fashioned | Become a Photo Hunter

This theme reminds me of a song on a Mandy Patinkin CD that I have which has the line, “I’m old-fashioned, but I don’t mind it.” 🙂 I tend to be old-fashioned in a lot of my tastes and views. The only things I’m terribly modern about are my appliances and technology.

I thought of using my show and tell post from yesterday about an old raisin rack and a cross-stitched sampler as double duty today since they’re very old-fashioned. But I decided to go with something different, though this picture also did appear on a previous show and tell post.

I love old-fashioned looking jewelry, and these are a few of my favorites. None was very expensive; all but two were gifts. But I just love how they look.

The one on the center bottom row with the pink roses and pearls is from a company called 1928. I love their Vintage Collection.
I also like the old-fashioned look of the Battenburg lace on the dresser scarf above.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Skinny

The first and only subject that came to mind for this category is my youngest son, Jesse.

Jesse's birthday
This was on his 14th birthday last September. He’s about 5’9″ or 5’10” and weighs 134 lbs. (though I am surprised it’s that much). When he was younger his brothers used to tease him about using him for a starving kid’s commercial. Somehow he got all the skinny genes that the rest of us missed — and he munches all the time.
Believe it or not, he started life as a 12 lb. baby. It was kind of funny — he was born in a women’s hospital where the only babies were newborns, and they didn’t have any diapers that would fit him. Someone had to go out and buy some. We’re not sure where the weight then came from — I didn’t have gestational diabetes that pregnancy and my weight gain was the most moderate of the three, and the quickest to get back to normal afterwards. He didn’t look fat when he was born — just bigger than you average newborn.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Delicious

For our anniversary Dec. 21, my husband got me some Lindor chocolate truffles. I had never heard of them before, and I was a little wary….I love chocolate, but not usually the fancy or gourmet varieties. But these were delicious.

I thought they were all gone, but a few days ago I was looking in the cabinet for my M&M stash and I found one last one that I had put up there when I was wanting to get rid of the box. I felt like I had found a lost treasure! I savored it — it was the most delicious of them all.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Messy

Theme: Messy | Become a Photo Hunter

I thought about showing the messy bed-heads of the kids Christmas morning or the messy aftermath of Christmas unwrapping…but then I decided to veer off in another direction.

I showed these before, but the renovation of our bathroom was one of the messiest things I’ve ever seen. Originally we (I say we — Jim and the boys) were just going to replace the tile in the shower with a shower surround. There were cracks in between the tiles that kept cracking no matter how much Jim caulked them, and water had gotten behind the tile into the wall and insulation. This is a picture during the messiest part of taking all that gunk off.

Yuck!
Usually with any project, though, it gets messy before it starts getting better.
After replacing the insulation and a couple of joists and the wall board, then adding the surround, he decided to go ahead and take off the old wallpaper, too (as it would have needed adjusting anyway since the surround didn’t come out as far as the tile had).
Here’s the finished product:

Finished bathroom renovation
I love it!
This is another messy place that needs work:

Bookshelves
I need to weed out some books so the rest will all fit. I hate to get rid of books, though! But there is no room for any more bookshelves (these are only two of the four we have — not including bookshelves in the boys’ rooms).
And that’s about all the messiness I care to show the world. 🙂

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Light

Theme: Light | Become a Photo Hunter

I spent much of the afternoon and evening thinking the theme was “Red” and pondering what to do and finally come up with an idea I was really excited about…only to realize this evening the theme for today is “Light.” “Red” was three weeks ago — and I even did that one. Yep, those brain cells are serving me well…

So, on to Light! I borrowed these picture from my son (with his permission) of our downtown area decorated for Christmas.

I was looking for the first picture for today and found the other two in the process.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Hot

When my older kids were little, the house we lived in was heated by these monstrous gas heaters.

So in our children’s crawling, toddling years, we were often saying, “Hot! Hot! No! No! Don’t touch!”

Somehow they survived — as did my brother and sisters and I — without getting burned. I do believe it is good for children to be taught that there are some things they cannot touch, but I am glad these things with their more serious consequences are no longer a part of our lives.

Besides, they’re also not exactly attractive focal points for one’s decor, either. 🙂

For more variations on today’s theme of “Hot,” see TNchick’s (our photo hunt hostess) entry for today and the accompanying participants’ links here.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: I love _____

Theme: I Love ____ | Become a Photo Hunter | View Blogroll

Most of these have appeared on my blog before, since I have naturally blogged about things I love. 🙂

At the top of the list of people I love would be God. I don’t mean to be disrespectful or demeaning or belittling to Him in any way by including Him on a list with lesser things, but, really, how can I make a list of what I love and not include Him? And though this is only a representation of Christ (I wrestled with the whole graven images issue here), I love the depiction of the Good Shepherd who found His dearly loved lost sheep.

I love my Bible and I am so glad to have it.

Psalm 51

I love my family:

I love hearts and pink roses:

Pink rose topiary

I love chocolate, especially semi-sweet:

Cookies

I love my extended family, autumn, pizza, Mexican food, reading, friends, holidays, old movies….and probably a lot more, but I’ll stop now. 🙂
