Paper-crafting Thursday: Fall card

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home hosts Paper-Crafting Thursday where we can show cards, bookmarks, etc. that we have made — or, I would guess, that others have made and given us.

This card is one I stamped several years ago.

Fall card

It was stamped with a “rainbow” stamp of different colors side-by-side that were allowed to “bleed” into each other. I think I had made a few like this, and this was the last one, but I messed up the note I was writing inside — it just wasn’t coming out right. But I didn’t want to throw this away, so it has been sitting in a box for years. With all the card-making inspiration of the last few weeks, I decided to see what I could do with it.

By the way, the row of leaves was made with this stamp, turning it each time, so it looked like the leaves were being blown by.

Fall card

This is the new, remade card:

Paper Crafting Thursday: Thank you cards

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home hosts Paper-Crafting Thursday where we can show cards, bookmarks, etc. that we have worked on. She has some really cute caramel apple cards up this week!

I needed to write some thank you notes and wanted to make the cards for them. A few weeks ago I had found these neat raised stickers at Michael’s in their sales bin for a dollar or two.

Raised stickers

I used one on this card:

Thank you card

Many places that sell card crafting supplies sell what a friend of mine calls “cheater cards” — cards with a decorative background so all you have to do is add embellishments. That’s what the one above started from.

I had wanted to use some new stamps to stamp a “Thank you” that I could then cut out and use, but I was in a bit of a time crunch. So I typed “Thank you” in a couple of different fonts on the computer and cut out a piece of card stock 4″ x 6″ and placed it in the photo tray of our printer and printed the “thank yous” out on that — worked just fine! You could also write them out by hand if you have nice writing or printing — I’m sorry to say I don’t.

Then, to get them into a shape, you could either cut or punch the shape out first and write in the center or try to arrange a stamp centrally. Or you could take a paper punch like this…

Paper punch

…and then turn it upside down and center the words in the opening like this:

Paper punch

It takes a bit more pressure to punch it out upside down, but I like being able to center words or a design like that. You could also cut them out freehand…but I don’t really have a good eye or a steady hand for that, so I rely on tools.

I used that paper punched thank you here:

Thank you card

I apologize for the blurriness! I thought it came out clearer, but I have already sent it out, so I can’t retake the picture.

And finally this one uses already cut-out leaves with a thank you glued in the center along with a couple of stickers from the above package.

Thank you card

I enjoyed making these! I hope the recipients enjoy them, too.

Paper Crafting Thursday

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home has begun hosting a Paper Crafting Thursday. I’ve enjoyed Kelli’s card tutorials for some time and look forward to seeing what everyone does. And I was excited to learn that I won last week’s paper crafting giveaway!

Mine are still pretty amateurish compared to others, but I love the creativity!

These are from last year as well — I hope to make some new ones this week.

Heart card

The verse was cut from a sheet of verses I printed out on the computer, and the heart was made with a paper punch.

Cards

Cards

The brown hearts remind me of chocolate candy. 🙂

For Laurel

This verse was also printed out. I used paper punches on the corners and the hearts. I think the hearts would have stood out more if I had backed them with a contrasting or solid paper. All of the papers for this one as well as the following two bookmarks and some of the pink and brown ones came from a booklets of coordinating papers which included the strip at the left and the picture at the bottom of the last bookmark.

Bookmark

More paper punches used here. I really love the one that rounds off corners.

Here is a little plaque I made:

Besides Kelli’s card tutorials, I’ve also bookmarked other card-making blogs for inspiration. I thought I’d share some with you all as well. Some of these post about other things besides cards as well, but they post cards regularly:

And, as I mentioned last time, I created a Flickr Group called Creative Cards. If you upload pictures to Flickr, I’d love to have you add your cards to that group!

Making cards

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home has started hosting an opportunity for bloggers to show their cards, bookmarks, or other paper crafts on Thursdays. I’ve been enjoying Kelli’s cards and others for a long time.

I have posted this picture before, but these are bookmarks I made when our ladies’ group was making them to send to our missionaries to use in their ministry.

Bookmarks

This one was made a couple of years ago as a thank you to someone who helped with our ladies’ banquet where the theme had to do with hearts.

Heart card

This past week our ladies met to make some cards for our missionaries to use. Here are a few I made:

We had a lady in our church who I call The Card Master show our ladies some techniques to make cards last month, and one idea she gave us was to start with what she called “cheater cards.” They sell these by the box at craft stores: cards with different background designs which you can then add embellishment to. Our ladies who hadn’t made cards before thought this was a great way to get started. Here is one that one of the ladies made:

And finally, this is one The Card Master made:

You can see she is eons ahead of the rest of us!! But that’s one reason I enjoy doing this together — it inspires more creative ideas.

Kelli, I think I have been bitten by the card-making bug!

By the way, I created a Flickr group called Creative Cards here — if any of you use Flickr for your photos, I’d love to have you submit your cards there!

Show and Tell

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home hosts “Show and Tell Friday” asking Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there’s a story behind your special something, that’s even better! If you would like to join in, all you have to do is post your “Show and Tell” on your blog, copy the post link, come over here and add it to Mr. Linky. Guidelines are here.

I wanted to show you a couple of sweet items found on sale at Forget Me Not Dreams on a Pink Friday sponsored by the shops at Make Mine Pink (which actually does have more than pink items. 🙂 )

Hot pads

I just LOVED these pot holders — I rarely see anything in pink for the kitchen in local shops. I didn’t realize how big they were when I ordered them, though — maybe 8 or 10 inches on each side.

Wall pocket

I loved everything about this wall pocket, too — the color, the design, the heart shape. I was thinking it was too bad I’d have to wait til spring to use it on my front door, but, I don’t know — it might look ok with fall decorations in it. What do you think?

I have to say, I totally love Pink Fridays at Make Mine Pink (and no, I am not paid nor asked to say that!) We don’t have shops like this in town, and it’s like visiting a nice sidewalk sale without having to leave home.

I also wanted to show my current work in progress:

WIP

It’s coming along! I am not finished back-stitching the scissors, but this shows how the back-stitching really defines specific areas:

I’m off to visit with other Show and Tellers at Kelli’s.

Site-seeing

Thanks to those who prayed for my family in Texas through Ike’s onslaught. They lost power around 2 a.m. the night it hit, but otherwise had no damage. I don’t know yet if the power has been restored — I haven’t been able to get in contact with them since Saturday morning, so that may be one indication they haven’t.

I wanted to share some interesting posts I’ve found recently:

How to help a family in a medical emergency at Adventures In Daily Living, HT to Rocks In My Dryer. Excellent advice.

How Christan Women Can Mentor and Be Mentored.

Books Build Character by The Common Room. Yet another excellent reason to read.

The Common Room has also been keeping up with several posts detailing the media feeding frenzy since Sarah Palin was named McCain’s running mate. It’s just amazing.

Semicolon has lots of links and resources to say Goodbye to Summer, Hello Autumn.

I found TipNut via Susan at By Grace. This post shares several 25 household tips. Some are outdated, like the one about cords on packages — I don’t think the Post Office allows cords or twine any more, do they? But most are really good. I’ve enjoyed subscribing and getting tips every day ranging from household tasks to craft ideas, like this one about organizing craft supplies and sewing rooms, and this thumb pincushion looks sooo handy.

Sew, Mama, Sew! has a great tutorial on sewing lined curtains, just in time! I hope to start mine this week. There is also one for cut-out curtains — embellishing plain panel curtains with designs cut out from other fabrics.

Here are some other neat crafty ideas:

This quilted potholder looks like a great way to try beginning quilting, as well as tying together a color scheme.

The cutest doorstop I have ever seen.

Christmas mitten ornaments out of felt.

A button/toile reversible heart ornament (the bottom half of the page).

A lovely and a little different fall centerpiece from Hydrangea Home.

Finally, I have been remiss in acknowledging the kindness of blog friends who have sent awards my way.

Carolyn at Talk to Grams gave me this Proximidade award. “To translate the gift from Portuguese to English, it means:”This blog invests and believes, the proximity” [meaning, that blogging makes us ‘close’ -being close through proxy] How awesome is that?? They all are charmed with the blogs, where in the majority of its aims are to show the marvels and to do friendship; there are persons who are not interested when we give them a prize, and then they help to cut these bows; do we want that they are cut, or that they propagate? Then let’s try to give more attention to them! So with this prize we must deliver it to 8 bloggers that in turn must make the same thing and put this text.”

I clicked back through several links trying to discover where this originated, but gave up after a while. It evidently began with someone who speaks Portuguese. 🙂

I’m going to pass this on to Alice, Jen, Susan, Susanne, Bet, Lizzie, Ann, and Melli. I know a couple of these ladies don’t “do” awards, but I still want to acknowledge them.

Mindy passed along this award:

Thanks Mindy! I passed this along to others a while back, so i won’t do so now.

Alice gave me this Super Commenter award:

as well as this bunch of tulips:

Mama Bear gave me this:

I’d like to pass this one on to Janet at Across the Page, Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home, Ivory Spring and Cindy Lou at Skip to My Lou.

Thank you all so much for thinking of me! You are very kind! Forgive me for taking too long to acknowledge some of these.

And now I think I am caught up! Have a good Monday!

Show and Tell Friday: Music Box

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home hosts “Show and Tell Friday” asking Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! My good friend Carol and I went out to lunch Tuesday for what I thought was a “catch up with each other” time, but she had actually planned it as a belated birthday gift. Of course, we did catch up with each other too, which was the best part, and enjoyed the reopening of one of our favorite restaurants. Carol also gave me a birthday gift then:

Music box

It’s not only a lovely box, but a music box:

Music box

It plays “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” I’m not quite sure where to put it and what to put in it yet, but I love it. 🙂 It fits right in with my decor.

I also wanted to show the updated progress on the cross stitch piece I am working on for those who might be interested. I enjoy seeing works-in-progress of others, so I thought some might like to see how this is coming along.

Cross stitch progress

The pitcher there looks a little similar to the one on the music box, doesn’t it?

You can find other show and tell entries or join in on the fun at Kelli’s. One reason I enjoy this meme is not just to see nice “stuff,” though that’s fun, too, but because it’s a nice way to get to know blogging friends by seeing what is special in their lives.

This and that

Punctuation makes all the difference! One of the last things I do at night is read the evening portion of Daily Light on the Daily Path. I don’t usually take my little cheapie reading glasses up to my bedroom for that: the print is large enough that I can usually make it out. I misread the opening verse in last night’s section as, “What meanest thou, O sleeper arise?” I thought, “Hmm, I don’t remember that one.” A closer look revealed it was actually, “What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise” from Jonah 1:6. The former is what I might say in King James’ time if someone woke me up too early.

Excitement at Grandma’s. We had a tornado warning Tuesday afternoon, sirens going off and everything. I wondered how they handled that at the assisted living place. The next day I found out that they have the residents come out into the hallways: there is a hallway that runs around the building with residents’ rooms on the outside and the library, laundry, salon, etc. in the center. Then yesterday my mil said they all had to go out of the building across into the grassy area because there was “some kind of threat,” though she didn’t know or remember just what it was. I wondered what kind of threat they could have had and asked the med tech when she came around: turns out it was just a fire drill. Some of the residents get upset by a change in routine, but my mil thought it was an interesting change of pace, something to break up the monotony. 🙂

Sometimes she talks about enjoying a “life of luxury” with all the time in the world to enjoy her favorite pastime (reading) without having to think about cooking or cleaning, but other times she admits to getting bored and lonely occasionally. Yet still when they have any kind of activity, even a time yesterday of celebrating all the birthdays for the month with cake and ice cream, she declines to go except for maybe twice now in the past two months. One of the staff members popped in while I was there yesterday to discuss something else, and when she realized that Mom hadn’t gone down to the birthday celebration, she said next time she’d go down and encourage her to go. I think if one of them just pops her head in the door to let Mom know there is something going on, she’ll decline just out of habit: she says she’s “too lazy.” But this lady had the type of personality that seemed like she could cheerfully invite without being overbearing.

Orthodontia, take 3. Jesse had his evaluation yesterday with the same orthodontist his brothers had, Dr. Smiley (a good name to go with that profession. 🙂 ) Oddly enough, he has the exact opposite problem they did. They had overbites; he has an underbite as far as his jaw structure goes, but his bottom teeth don’t protrude because they have turned sidewaysand bent back in some cases. Dr. Smiley said with this particular type of problem, they could straighten the teeth but it could all go back since he is still growing, and it might be best to wait until his later teens when his growth has plateaued. They did all the diagnostic tests yesterday and we’ll go back in a couple of weeks to see what his recommendation is.

Decorating style. I saw a link at Lifenut‘s to this pictorial quiz to determine your decorating style. The pictures are lovely, though a little too small to see the details, so I just went by impression on some of them. My results, though, instead of saying “romantic” or “cottage” style, said “Lady of the Manor”:

When it comes to all household, interior design and decorating decisions, you are in control, you are in charge. Your house is your domain. Everything – and we mean everything – has been lovingly attended to, right down to the finer details. There’s no such thing as too pretty in your book, and probably never too much pink or pomp either.

Well, the parts about pretty, pink, and details are fairly accurate, but I am uncomfortable with the emphasis on “control.” I happen to be the only lady of the manor, and menfolk generally don’t care too much about decorating, so that’s my domain. My husband and I do consult together and shop for big items together. The boys aren’t terribly interested except they don’t like “all the flowers,” so I have made a concerted effort to have the bathrooms and family rooms not quite so feminine-looking. They also give you a little blurb about your style in each room. Here’s what they say about my living room style:

You love to indulge the senses, to pamper and prettify…curvaceous sofas and generously comfortable upholstery, and an eye that misses nothing. There’s no doubt who’s the mistress of the house! The countryside is frequently an inspiration, and country-style accessories work incredibly well. There’s nothing prettier than an earthenware jug or a simple slipware vase filled with fresh flowers. Pastel pinks and yellows give the room a fresh, feminine feel, while floral prints and textiles are pretty and perennially appealing. Curled up on the sofa with a good book, your living room’s the perfect place for some “me-time”.

Pretty accurate, again, except I don’t like yellow. Here’s my actual living room:
Living room, left side

It was a fun exercise, though it didn’t really tell me anything I didn’t know. I was hoping it would identify what my “style” was — I’ve often said I am somewhere between country and Victorian.

Crafty giveaway! One of the craft blogs I read, Skip to My Lou, linked to a giveaway at a new-to-me family fun blog, Vanilla Joy. There is a giveaway for every day this week — a Cricut (today’s the last day for that, and that’s a big one!), and other assorted scrapbooking and craft tools each day.

Hmm…these little jottings have grown into a much longer post than originally intended! I could take all the decorating part out for another separate post later on — but I think I’ll just leave it as is. But I will stop now. Have a good day!

These are a couple of recent online sale purchases. Every Friday some of the shops at Make Mine Pink feature sales based on a theme of the week. Last week it was baby gifts, this week it is “Wonderful Whites.” I think the week I got these the theme was something like “From the Garden.”

I got these from Hydrangea Home at a very nice sale price. The first one is just “me” all the way around. And I have always wanted something like the second one for when I cut a few roses from the bushes along the house or bring flowers home from the store.

I also wanted to show my current work-in-progress:

Show and Tell Friday: Paula Vaughn collection

Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home hosts “Show and Tell Friday” asking Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there’s a story behind your special something, that’s even better! I mentioned before that Paula Vaughn is one of my favorite artists. I first became aware of her books maybe 20 or more years ago when I first saw her cross stitch patterns. I bough several, but with beginning a young family I didn’t have time to do them then. However, my sister made a couple for me which I have shown before:

Close-up

cimg0737.jpg

Then somehow I discovered that her cross stitch patterns were based on her water color paintings. When we moved to a new home several years ago, we had a separate family room and living room, which was new to us — we had just had a living room before. So we had a whole new room to furnish. In the course of looking for ways to decorate it, I discovered some Paula Vaughn prints in a local shop, but I felt they were too expensive. But my next birthday my dear husband bought them for me.

Paula Vaughn prints

Unfortunately, that’s not the greatest picture. Trying to get adequate lighting while not reflecting off the glass was a problem. Here is a close-up of the middle one:

Paula Vaughn print

Then over the last few years my family has given me a couple of Paula Vaughn books as gifts. One is The Best of Paula Vaughn. I don’t know if it is in print any more: I didn’t find it on Amazon.

Paula Vaughn book

It’s mainly pictures of her cross stitch designs with the patterns and a little background information.

Paula Vaughn book

The other, The Romance of Paula Vaughn, has cross stitch projects but also several other kinds of projects. Here are a few samples from the book:

I love her style (obviously!) Though I hope to eventually make a few projects from the book, even if I never do, I love perusing the books when I need a boost of inspiration. There is something about beautiful art and handiwork that just does something for my soul. I used to struggle with that: I used to think maybe I should just be functional. But then I was reminded that God could have made the world just functional, but He also made it beautiful. Beauty and creativity are a part of His character, and it’s ok if we reflect and enjoy those traits within the means and time He has given us at different seasons of life.

I finally did start a Paula Vaughn cross stitch project of my own! I’ve had the pattern for a while, though it is newer than some of the ones I bought when my kids were small. I started it a couple of weeks ago, and the pattern seemed really complicated to me, but it is coming together more quickly and easily than I would have thought. Here is what I have so far:

I hope you have enjoyed looking through Paula’s art as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you! You can find more Show and Tells or join in on the fun at Kelli’s.
