A Redneck Thanksgiving

You Might Be a Redneck This Thanksgiving If…

… you’ve ever had Thanksgiving dinner on a ping-pong table.

… Thanksgiving dinner is squirrel and dumplings.

… you’ve ever reused a paper plate.

… if you have a complete set of salad bowls and they all say Cool Whip on the side.

… if you’ve ever used your ironing board as a buffet table.

… your turkey platter is an old hubcap.

… your best dishes have Dixie printed on them.

… your stuffing’s secret ingredient comes from the bait shop.

… your only condiment on the dining room table is ketchup.

… side dishes include beef jerky and Moon Pies.

… you have to go outside to get something out of the ‘fridge.

… the directions to your house include “turn off the paved road.”

… you consider pork and beans to be a gourmet food.

… you have an Elvis Jell-o mold.

… your secret family recipe is illegal.

… you serve Vienna sausage as an appetizer.

Giving Thanks I am linking this to Kelli’s Week of Giving Thanks at There’s No Place Like Home — a festival of Thanksgiving posts — poems, quotes, decorations, crafts, recipes, etc….and a few silly things like this. 🙂

Blue Monday: Me!

Smiling Sally hosts a Blue Monday in which we can post about anything blue — pretty, ugly, serious or funny — and then link up to other Blue Monday participants.

I saw this quiz at Joyful Days last week, and when I took it and saw the results, I thought it would be perfect for Blue Monday. 🙂

You are most like:

You are Blue

You are cool and soothing, with a hidden spontanious side. You are deeper than most people percieve, and you care a lot for those whom you surround yourself with.

Take this quiz: Which Crayola Box of 8 Color Are You?

How did I miss National Chocolate Day

…on October 28? My gastronomical first love! I’ll just have to have a belated celebration with something chocolate…besides the Halloween candy I bought this morning.

I was first alerted to this special day by The Common Room who linked to a recipe for Dangerous Chocolate Cake in a Mug at Life In a Shoe. As I said there, it sound perfect when you’re craving something chocolate but don’t want a whole panful of brownies to tempt you to have more. I need to try it!

Quizzes and such

Seen at Jungle Mom’s:

My blog is worth $64,922.10.
How much is your blog worth?

I wonder how they figure these things?

I saw this one about blogging personalities at Melli’s. I couldn’t decide how to answer this question:

Overall, the tone of your blog / journal is:

Like a personal journal of your feelings and reactions

Friendly, but not overly revealing or emotional

If I check the first one, I get this:

Your Blogging Type is Kind and Harmonious

You’re an approachable blogger who tends to have many online friends.

People new to your blogging circle know they can count on you for support.

You tend to mediate fighting and drama. You set a cooperative tone.

You have a great eye for design – and your blog tends to be the best looking on the block!

If I check the second one, I get this:

Your Blogging Type is Logical and Principled

You like to voice your well thought out opinions on your blog.

And if someone doesn’t what you write, you really don’t care!

Serious and blunt, sometimes people take your blog the wrong way.

But you’re a true and loyal friend to those who truly get you.

So I guess I am somewhere in between those two — or maybe I have elements of both?

My jaw/gum/ear/head is better, but still hurts or aches sometimes. I ended up not going to see the dentist yesterday because it felt like it was getting better. It is immensely better than it was over the weekend, especially if I keep up on the ibuprofen. But I don’t want to take a lot of that for too long a time. A couple of ladies suggested it sounded like TMJ, and after looking it up I agree it sounds a lot like it. Seems so strange that it would just start up all of a sudden like that. But6 I guess we’ll see how it goes!

Purse-onality

I finally bought a new purse today!

It was about time — don’tcha think?

Old Purse

I’ve been looking for one. I rarely spend more than $15 for one, but I couldn’t find one I liked at all my usual sources. I found one at the mall I loved for twice that price but just did not want to spend that much.

Finally I was in Wal-Mart today and looked again. I hadn’t remembered seeing this one before.

Purses

I had been wanting one with just one strap because if I have two straps one invariably falls off my shoulder. I like having different compartments inside, but I only wanted one zipper. When I have two I almost always unzip the wrong side for whatever I am looking for. So this will remove those two little everyday frustrations. It isn’t divided inside, but we’ll just deal with it and see how it goes. I like having a little outside pocket for keys and cell phone.

I’m a pretty basic person when it come to purses. I posted a while back that I had seen a headline somewhere saying “Your purse is boring,” and my immediate thought was, “My purse is not here to entertain you!” I can see how purses can be a fashion accent and I am not against that. On the other hand, I don’t want the first thing people notice when they see me coming is my purse. It’s just not that big a deal to me.

But I do want it to look “nice,” not too big or small, functional with some form — I don’t like the floppy “bag” kind.

I have a basic black one for every day but I do change and use a navy or cream-colored one to coordinate with what I am wearing when I am dressing up a bit.

Purses

This one is my one “outside the box” purse:

Purses

I love it. I have a few light solid color dresses that I wear in the summer and use this with those.

I hadn’t originally intended to write a whole purse post when I bought this one this morning! But then I remembered seeing a purse quiz somewhere a while back, so I searched for it and found this:

What Your Handbag Says About You

You tend to be relaxed throughout the day.

You are naturally at peace.

Your motto is : “Be prepared.” You don’t like to be surprised by anything.

You are practical and down to earth. You tend to be a rather reserved and quiet person.

The last two sentences are totally true of me!

In the course of searching for that quiz I found this meme made up by the blogger at Communication FUNdamentals, whom I had never read before but who sounds like someone I’d like to get to know!

1. How many purses do you own?

5, though I primarily use one most of the time.

2. In general do you like small purses or large purses?

In between. I do like to carry a number of things in there, so, though the little ones are cute, they’re just not practical. It’s hard to find things in the big ones, plus they are awkward and heavy (to me). I do carry a tote bag if I am traveling, though, because I’ll also have a book and a few other things I don’t normally carry along with me every day.

3. In general do you like lots of pockets or just to dump stuff into one big pocket?

I like a few. With one big pocket it seems like whatever you’re looking for is at the bottom. With too many it’s hard to remember what you put in which pocket. I like a couple inside and at least one outside.

4. What is the color of your purse or, if you have more than one, what is the color of most of your purses?

Main everyday one is black, but I also have navy, white, cream, and floral ones.

5. Do you like leather or fabric purses?

Doesn’t really matter. I think my leatherish ones are probably “faux” leather.

6. If you didn’t have to be practical, what kind of purse would you LOVE to have?

I love the floral one mentioned above. That’s about as extravagant as I get with purses. 🙂

7. How old is your oldest purse?

Oh my…let’s see… some of the ones I don’t use every day are over 10 years old. My everyday one, of course, wears out much faster.

8. When was the last time you got a new purse?

This morning!

9. Did you play with purses when you were a kid?

I probably had some but I don’t remember. I wasn’t obsessed with them. I don’t remember playing any kind of dress-up.

10 Does your wallet have to match your purse?

No. It’s nice, but not a big deal. I don’t even think about that if I am buying a wallet or purse.

So…what’s your purse-onality?

Saturday Sightings

  • Ever have one of those days, when something seemed a bit…”off” but you just couldn’t put your finger on it…

(This was in an e-mail, so I don’t know the original source.)

If you are familiar with the movie Castaway, here is an alternate ending:

(For some reason when I preview this page, the video isn’t showing up. If you can’t see it you can find it here.)

  • I agree with Gretchen at Lifenut’s reaction to a commercial indicating that mothers who use paper plates are better because they are not taking precious time away from their loved ones by washing dishes. It’s a bad commercial on many points: do we want to designate Bad Moms vs. Good Moms on the basis of paper plates? Especially in these days of “going green,” adding to landfills seems a poor way to spend time with the family. As I commented there, loading my dishwasher takes 5-10 minutes most nights, hardly a dent in the family’s time together, but if we washed them the old fashioned way, we’d spend time together all helping. Families can bond together while working as well as (maybe even better than) playing together.
  • I also agree with Gretchen’s post here “Well-rounded isn’t just for balls.” While sports and other activities are valuable, in all too many instances they seem to just take over a family’s life. I was glad mine only wanted to be in organized sports a few years. I don’t know how parents do it for so many years.

Thursday Thirteen: Commercials from my childhood

Linda’s post about the Rice-a-Roni commercial the other day set off a stream of memories of commercials that were popular when I was a kid. So I thought I’d see if I could find 13 of them, and I hope this many YouTube videos doesn’t crash all of WordPress! 🙂

1. No More Rice Krispies

2. Mr. Whipple: “Please don’t squeeze the Charmin”

3. Madge and Palmolive Liquid: “You’re soaking in it.”

4. He likes it! Mikey likes it!

5. Have It Your Way…at Burger King

6. The Frito Bandito

7. Is it live, or is it Memorex?

8. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking

9. Where’s the beef?

10. My bologna has a first name..

11. Oh, I’d love to be an Oscar Meyer Weiner…

12. Brylcreem: A little dab’ll do ya

13. And of course, the Rice-a-Roni jingle, the “San Francisco Treat.”

My oldest son, Jeremy, shared this with us and it cracked us all up.

Site-seeing

Thanks to those who prayed for my family in Texas through Ike’s onslaught. They lost power around 2 a.m. the night it hit, but otherwise had no damage. I don’t know yet if the power has been restored — I haven’t been able to get in contact with them since Saturday morning, so that may be one indication they haven’t.

I wanted to share some interesting posts I’ve found recently:

How to help a family in a medical emergency at Adventures In Daily Living, HT to Rocks In My Dryer. Excellent advice.

How Christan Women Can Mentor and Be Mentored.

Books Build Character by The Common Room. Yet another excellent reason to read.

The Common Room has also been keeping up with several posts detailing the media feeding frenzy since Sarah Palin was named McCain’s running mate. It’s just amazing.

Semicolon has lots of links and resources to say Goodbye to Summer, Hello Autumn.

I found TipNut via Susan at By Grace. This post shares several 25 household tips. Some are outdated, like the one about cords on packages — I don’t think the Post Office allows cords or twine any more, do they? But most are really good. I’ve enjoyed subscribing and getting tips every day ranging from household tasks to craft ideas, like this one about organizing craft supplies and sewing rooms, and this thumb pincushion looks sooo handy.

Sew, Mama, Sew! has a great tutorial on sewing lined curtains, just in time! I hope to start mine this week. There is also one for cut-out curtains — embellishing plain panel curtains with designs cut out from other fabrics.

Here are some other neat crafty ideas:

This quilted potholder looks like a great way to try beginning quilting, as well as tying together a color scheme.

The cutest doorstop I have ever seen.

Christmas mitten ornaments out of felt.

A button/toile reversible heart ornament (the bottom half of the page).

A lovely and a little different fall centerpiece from Hydrangea Home.

Finally, I have been remiss in acknowledging the kindness of blog friends who have sent awards my way.

Carolyn at Talk to Grams gave me this Proximidade award. “To translate the gift from Portuguese to English, it means:”This blog invests and believes, the proximity” [meaning, that blogging makes us ‘close’ -being close through proxy] How awesome is that?? They all are charmed with the blogs, where in the majority of its aims are to show the marvels and to do friendship; there are persons who are not interested when we give them a prize, and then they help to cut these bows; do we want that they are cut, or that they propagate? Then let’s try to give more attention to them! So with this prize we must deliver it to 8 bloggers that in turn must make the same thing and put this text.”

I clicked back through several links trying to discover where this originated, but gave up after a while. It evidently began with someone who speaks Portuguese. 🙂

I’m going to pass this on to Alice, Jen, Susan, Susanne, Bet, Lizzie, Ann, and Melli. I know a couple of these ladies don’t “do” awards, but I still want to acknowledge them.

Mindy passed along this award:

Thanks Mindy! I passed this along to others a while back, so i won’t do so now.

Alice gave me this Super Commenter award:

as well as this bunch of tulips:

Mama Bear gave me this:

I’d like to pass this one on to Janet at Across the Page, Kelli at There’s No Place Like Home, Ivory Spring and Cindy Lou at Skip to My Lou.

Thank you all so much for thinking of me! You are very kind! Forgive me for taking too long to acknowledge some of these.

And now I think I am caught up! Have a good Monday!

Saturday Funnies

My husband suggested this once for our home decor…

If you can’t see it very well, it is a clear toilet seat and lid with little plastic fishies in it.

Umm…no thanks, dear. 🙂
