Here are some favorites from the last week or so:

1. Turning calendar pages. I love turning to the fresh, clean pages of a new month.

2. A parking mat.

mat

I had a hard time parking in just the right place in the garage, and this is simple and less obtrusive than other ways to deal with it.

3. Reading 100+ pages in one morning. Jesse got braces this week, and the appointment afforded me time to just sit in the lobby and read. It was kind of a balm (for me, anyway, not for him, poor guy!) to get away from the hecticness of the last couple of weeks and just sit and read.

4. A good aide. I mentioned in yesterday’s update on Grandma that the home health care aide we have working with her Monday through Fridays has been great.

5. A favorable prediction. On the news last night, the weather man said that August was originally predicted to be hotter than normal, but now he is predicting it will be less hot than normal, just like July has been. We’ve had a few very hot days, but nothing like the usual summer heat, and I am delighted that it looks like that trend might continue!

Happy Friday!

Update: Oops! I forgot Susanne was taking a break from the computer! But it’s good to look back over the week and recount it’s blessings anyway.

Friday’s Fave Five

It seems like I say it has been a busy week every Friday, and so far it has been a busier than usual summer. But this is probably the busiest week so far. Here are some of the highlights:

1. Jason’s birthday celebrations. His birthday was Thursday, we took him and Mittu out to eat at a new-to-us Chinese place Friday and then went to their place for cake and presents, then Saturday Mittu threw him a surprise birthday party with friends at our house. Each event was much fun!

2. A good session with the doctor. I had my yearly physical Monday and was able to discuss some concerns that, for whatever reason, I hadn’t wanted to bring up before, but we were able to have a good discussion and he gave me some practical solutions.

3. A friend indeed. A friend at church who has taken a special interest in Grandma, always greeted her at church, and has visited her on occasion, was asking me about her on Sunday. She hadn’t heard that we were planning to bring her home, and as I was telling her about it and admitted I was struggling a bit with having my peaceful solitude at home “invaded,” I got unexpectedly emotional. She didn’t judge, just hugged and understood and said…I don’t even remember what, but it helped. 🙂

4. A word in due season. Either the morning we were to bring her home or the morning before, I was seriously wrestling with how I’d be able to handle it, and God gave me just exactly what I needed in my morning devotions and gave me a calmness of heart.

5. A smooth transition for Grandma. We moved her home Wednesday, and she seems to be doing well so far. Change, even positive change, can be hard, especially at her age and situation, but she seems happy and peaceful, and she’s very patient with our bumbling attempts at her care. The home health aide has been great with her and we all seem to connect well. The nursing home gave referrals for a physical therapist, a home nurse to visit a couple of days a week (they came yesterday), a speech therapist, and an occupational therapist (still to meet them). I was very glad – otherwise we, or at least I, would have felt set adrift after leaving the nursing home. We have been very pleased with all of them so far. Health care workers who are compassionate, caring, and competent are worth their weight in gold.

I’m understandably behind with reading and commenting on blogs, but I hope to catch up this weekend, when some of the extra therapists and such won’t be here and it will be a fairly regular day – at least as far as I can foresee just now. 🙂

Friday’s Fave Five

Another busy week has passed – I’m going to need a break from summer break. 🙂 But I appreciate having the opportunity each Friday to stop and think about the best parts of the week. Without Friday’s Fave Five I might let those blessings sail by without as much thought and thanks as they should generate, and I might forget to look for them in the weeks that are more problematic or heavy. Thanks once again, Susanne, for hosting this!

So here are some of the highlights from this week:

1. Mexican food. We hadn’t had any in a while – out, that is. There are a few dishes I make, but chimichangas aren’t one of my specialties, and that’s what I love to get when we eat at a Mexican food place.

2. My favorite All Meat pizza. There is a little local pizza place that Jesse and I love but my husband doesn’t care for. One night when Jim had an evening meeting, Jesse and I got a pizza from this place. Always nice to have a night “off” from cooking, especially unexpectedly on a week day, and this is one of my favorite things to have on that occasion.

3. Picking up my latest stitching project again. I had laid it aside….oh, I think maybe during Christmastime, and it has been such a busy year since that I just haven’t been inclined to get back into it. But for some reason I was inspired to this week, and once I get going I feel driven to keep at it. Here’s what I have so far:

photo(10)

4. A successful outreach cookout. Our church has been breaking up into small groups on Sunday nights to go through Tim Keller’s Gospel in Life series. Part of the emphasis is that the gospel isn’t just for salvation, but it is supposed to affect every area of life, and part of the emphasis is on community. The cookout was partly for members to get to know each other better but mainly for an opportunity to invite visitors. Rain was forecasted but thankfully did not appear, and the lake view next to the pavilion where we were was beautiful. There was a good ratio of visitors to church folks: if everyone had brought visitors, we each would likely have been taken up with our own visitors, without as much opportunity to interact with each other. As it turned out we sat across from a couple who were neighbors of one of our group and had a thoroughly enjoyable time chatting. I have to admit as an introvert that this kind of thing is intimidating to me, and I was feeling overwhelmed when I first came and saw a lot of people, in particular a lot of people I didn’t know (our “small” group is one of the biggest), but thankfully God gave grace and it went very well.

5. Your warm and thoughtful comments on my post about bringing Grandma home.

Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks for a giveaway to celebrate my 3,000th post and upcoming 7th blog anniversary. I’m not sure what I will do for it yet, but I’m pondering!

Friday’s Fave Five

It’s hard to believe the summer is half over already. I wonder if the rest of it will be as busy as the first of it – probably so for us as we have three birthdays in July and August. But each week has its highlights, and here are some from this week:

1. Sunlight! We’ve had way more rain than usual this summer. I fact, this cartoon going around Facebook seemed apt:

Rain

But we’ve had some bright sunshine parts of this week as well, which has helped to dry things out about and was quite refreshing.

2. Cool evenings. One advantage to the rain has been that it has taken the edge off the normal summer heat wave. We’ve actually had to turn the AC down at night, and I’ve enjoyed some decaf coffee with something desserty in the evenings – I usually avoid coffee during the summer because it makes me hot.

3. New corner shelves for the closet in the craft/sewing room, and a son to put them together for me:

Corner shelves

I had been trying to figure out how to best utilize that corner, and this was the perfect solution, plus being open on two sides makes it more accessible.

4. Sunflowers are not my favorite flower, but they are kind of neat – fun, happy flowers. When this one sprouted from dropped bird seed, we decided to let it grow. I think I am going to have to move the bird feeder, though!

5. Finally getting eye doctor appointments made and completed…after nearly three years here. 😳 Jesse’s eyes have not changed much, thankfully, so he does not need new glasses. I have a prescription for bifocals if I want them, or I can just keep on with my little readers if I prefer. I hate the constant off-and-on activity with the readers (as in church, for example, when I need them on to see my notes or Bible and off to see the preacher or screen), but I’m not sure that aggravation is worth the expense of bifocals. Still thinking about it.

I could also list books this week, always a fave, but I’ve been in some particularly good ones this week. Plus I have gotten some more organizing done in my craft/sewing room, which always feels good.

We have a busy week ahead with a church activity, a birthday, a ladies’ group activity, and preparations to bring my mother-in-law home – more on that later. Plus my 3,000th post and my 7th blogging anniversary are coming up: seems like I should do something special to commemorate those, but I am not sure what yet. Stay tuned! 🙂

Friday’s Fave Five

I don’t know what happened to the “lazy days of summer.” July has barely started and I’m tired already! 🙂 But it has been a good week. Here are some of its highlights:

1. My mother-in-law’s 85th birthday.

2. Getting word that my niece’s fiance is CANCER FREE!!!!! Some months ago I had mentioned that my niece’s 19 year old fiance had been found to have multiple tumors in various places. After a surgery and then months of grueling chemo, scans last week showed no sign of cancer. Praise the Lord! He has to go back to the doctor every six months for the next two years just to check on things.

3. Independence Day. I am so thankful that our country is free and that people have sacrificed to make and keep it that way. A day off in the middle of the week is nice, too. 🙂 Our neighbors planned something of a block party that went well despite frequent rain. I only knew two neighbors before, so it was nice to meet and get to know others. We ended the night with a family game of Settlers of Catan.

4. Getting some overdue phone calls made. For some reason I am getting terrible about that, especially in regard to appointments. I finally determined to just sit down and plow through all of them.

5. A hopeful prognosis. One of those phone calls was to an orthodontist. Jesse’s previous orthodontist in SC had recommended waiting until he finished growing to try to begin work on his needs. He had also said he would likely need surgery to remove part of his jaw to correct his particular problem, which to us sounded like a drastic measure (though we don’t question his judgement – he had been great with our older two boys). The orthodontist we saw here said there is a good chance we can correct the problem just by removing some extra teeth and positioning others. They took x-rays and such, and we won’t know the best course of action they’ll recommend until we see them again next week, but it’s a great relief that we might be able t get away without that kind of surgery. Plus it is just good to get the ball rolling on all this.

Hope you have a great weekend! It’s due to be a rainy one here, but we’ve got lots of indoor projects we can work on.

Friday’s Fave Five

Another week has flown by, and I don’t have much to show for this one. I think I am recuperating from last week when we had family here and were doing something almost every day. 🙂 Here are some favorite parts of this week:

1. Fresh, clean sheets and pillows plumped up from being washed and dried. One of my favorites of life’s little pleasures.

2. A good doctor visit for Jesse. I am ashamed to say he has not had a physical in the three years we have been here, and several before that were only sports physicals. Thank God he has been remarkably healthy. We finally got that done, and except for his lab work being a bit low in a couple of areas, easily remedied, everything is fine.

3. A belated Father’s Day. Jim didn’t want to open gifts or anything when my family was here over Father’s Day, so we focused on my step-father that day, and honored Jim this last Sunday. It’s fun to have the family all here (Jeremy via FaceTime), to get him some things he was wanting and a couple of things he was not expecting.

4. Grilled ham steaks. I had gotten these for when my family was going to be here but ended up not using them, so Jim grilled them last Saturday, and because we had extra we had enough to use for several days. Yum!

5. Leftovers. I adapt some meals for just the three of us, but others I make as I always have and use the leftovers for lunch or sometimes even for another dinner. Thankfully my family doesn’t mind – depending, of course, on exactly what’s left over (some leftovers are left until they grow fuzzy stuff). We’ve had some that everyone liked this week, besides the ham, and it’s nice to have an easy meal just heating up leftovers, especially on Wednesday nights when our church has prayer meeting and meal time is a bit rushed.

Hope you have a great Friday!

Family Visit and Friday’s Fave Five

Wow, I don’t think I have ever been away from my blog for a whole week before! My step-father, two of my sisters, and one nephew from TX came for nearly a week-long visit and just left this morning. We had a great time with a balanced amount of just hanging out and talking and then going and doing some fun things. All of us except Jim, Jason, and Mittu, who had to work, drove a couple of hours to meet up with another sister, her significant other, a niece, and her daughter from SC in Asheville, NC. for  few hours yesterday, and one night we got together at a restaurant with an aunt and uncle from across town that we’d been trying to get together with for three years – we joked that it took family coming from TX to make it happen. We did a lot of talking, eating, and laughing all week.

This has been a whole week of highlights, here are five of them:

1. Visiting with extended family, of course. 🙂

2. Meeting my great-niece for the first time. She’s two and absolutely adorable.

3. Playing games. We had several rousing hands of Apples to Apples one night and Taboo another night.

4. Going to Jason and Mittu’s for dinner one night. She makes a wonderful easier and lighter version of Chicken Cordon Bleu that is one of my favorite dishes, had some neat egg salad bites for appetizers, and chocolate waffles with ice cream for dessert.

5. Dixie Stampede. A rootin’, tootin’, wild west revue type of show is not necessarily my favorite, but the whole experience  of a dinner show with the family was great fun. We had a fun, wonderful waiter. One of the food items you get is a whole small rotisserie chicken, and as he was serving those he was calling out, “Chicken nuggets!” I had seen on the web site that they don’t offer serving utensils as part of the experience, so I slipped some plastic ones in a plastic bag for us. When our waiter saw them, he said, “Cheater, cheater!” and when he was gathering up plates afterward joked about not wanting to touch the “contraband.” They serve one food item at a time (which works out well, because they serve a massive amount of food, and you’d never be able to eat it all at one time), and when he delivered the corn on the cob, he joked, “Try eating that with a fork!” They do give you a warm, wet cloth at the hand to wipe your hands.

All in all it was a great week! But I am officially giving myself the day off today, except for laundry, and I foresee a nap in my future since we got up with them at 4 a.m. to see them off. And I will try to catch up with you all throughout the day.

Another week has flown by. Whew!  Here are some of its highlights.

1. A game night. This is actually from weekend before last but I had forgotten it by Friday. Jason and Mittu came over for a game of Settlers of Cataan, which we hadn’t done for a while. It ended up being about the closest game of that I ever remember playing.

2. Crescent rolls without seams:

Barbara's Cell phone pics 198

I have a couple of recipes which use crescent roll dough rolled out, and you’re supposed to press the seams together. They rarely stay pressed, so this was nice to see.

3. Annette’s Snickerdoodle Bars, made when my friend from last week came. I think I have mentioned them before: they’re a highlight any week I make them. 🙂

4. A nostalgic breakfast. My friend who came through last week on her way to see her daughter came back through last night, and we went out for breakfast this morning. We were headed out to one place when we saw the sign for Shoney’s breakfast bar. That used to be our go-to place when our kids were babies: they’d have regular coupons, and kids ate free. So we went there for old time’s sake, and they had many of the same features I remembered.

5. An eventful phone call. A man in our church has been on a list for a lung transplant and just got the call last night to head up to PA for surgery. I haven’t heard any word yet as to how everything went, but we’re hoping and praying for the best.

I may be scarce this next week as I have family coming in from out of town.

Happy Friday!

Another busy week — I thought things were supposed to slow down in the summertime! 🙂 Here are some favorites from the last week:

1. Getting a couple of projects done: curtains and a remade bulletin board for the sewing/craft room. I’ve had both in mind for a while, so it was nice to finally decide what to do and get it done.

CIMG5853

2. A rest day. I was not feeling well Sunday – nothing horrible, but just enough to stay home from church. I spent most of the day resting and reading – got a whole book read in a day! It felt so luxurious.

3. More light. I enjoy having more light in the evenings this time of year.

4. A visit from a friend. A good friend since early married days 30+ years ago and her daughter stopped by for an overnight visit on their way to visit another daughter. It’s always so good to catch up with them.

5. A husband who knows what to do. My friend’s car was leaking gas really badly. She had just gotten it back from the shop where they were supposed to have fixed the problem, but evidently the fix didn’t work, and she had another 8-hour drive scheduled today. Everyone was tired last night and decided to sleep on it, but then my husband came up with a plan of action that would take care of the car but still get her where she needed to go. So many times in our lives he has been able to come up with a practical plan of action when I’d still be in a muddle of not knowing what to do. I so appreciate that.

Bonus: It’s National Doughnut Day at Krispy Kreme, and they’re giving away one free doughnut per customer. We don’t have one right near us (which is good, because I’d be there much too often: their “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign is an irresistible magnet), but I may have to go looking for one. 🙂

Happy Friday!

Here are some highlights of the past week – I think many of them are “repeats,” but it’s good to be thankful for blessings every time they happen, not just the first time: 🙂

1. A three day weekend.

2. A cookout with the family including grilled hamburgers and chocolate pie.

3. A leaky toilet fixed, and a hard-working husband willing to tackle it. He had Jesse work with him this time – figured it was one of those life skills he needed to have. I’m thankful, too, that we have more than one bathroom so it wasn’t much of a problem to have one out of commission for a day.

4. God’s help reaching a goal. I’ve been working on the church’s ladies newsletter and hoped to get it finished yesterday so all I had to do today was proofread it one last time before getting it printed (as opposed to racing against the clock Friday afternoon to get it done), and, thank the Lord, that happened.

5. Good visits with Jim’s mom. Since she is not speaking much any more, and when she does try I often can’t hear or understand her, it makes visiting a little harder. Sometimes she nods or shakes her head, but sometimes you just don’t know how much she is getting. Two days ago she actually laughed at something I said and then teased Jim back a little bit, and yesterday when I asked her if she’d had a good lunch, she asked me, “Did YOU have a good lunch?” Then she was able to speak quietly, but still out loud, for the rest of the visit.

Happy Friday!
