Friday’s Fave Five

It’s Friday, time to look back over the blessings of the week with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story and other friends.

It’s been a full week here getting ready for Christmas. I know I don’t have to get it all done before my oldest son comes next week, but I’d like to conquer as much as possible. One moment it seems to be going pretty well – the next, it still feels like there is a ton to do! Here are some favorite highlights of the past week:

1. The church ladies’ Christmas party. I hadn’t been sure that I’d make it, but thankfully I did. The fellowship and activities were fun, and we heard a wonderful testimony of God’s grace in very hard times.

2. Sunday lunch at my son and daughter-in-law’s. Normally they come here due to my mother-in-law’s situation, but my daughter-in-law’s mom was here for a visit, and they invited us to lunch there. Great-grandma’s caregiver was able to stay a bit later, so we were able to go. Enjoyed the visit, plus it was nice not to have to think about what to make when we got home from church! We enjoyed hosting them here a few days later. I forgot to mention last week that my wonderful daughter-in-law made hamburger pie the day we did our Christmas decorating. That was a big help, plus it was yummy!

3. The children’s Christmas program at church Sunday night. They always do the nativity story, though with different songs each year, and it’s neat to see different kids in the different roles each year. It just wouldn’t seem like the Christmas season without the kids’ program!

4. Making progress with Christmas preparations. Almost have the shopping done, am just about finished with our annual Christmas letter, I plan on addressing cards tonight, and have made a start on wrapping.

5. Beef! We don’t have it often, for health and financial reasons, but I crave it every now and then. A local store advertised roasts on sale, but by the time I got there, the last day of the sale, there were only two left which didn’t look very good. But stew meat was on sale right next to it. So I dumped that in the crockpot with potatoes and carrots and have been enjoying the leftovers for a couple of days now.

Bonus: Christmas music! I love the older carols and newer songs of the season. BBN Radio is playing all Christmas music this month, and that and listening to our own collection while cooking, wrapping, etc., has been a special blessing.

I hope your Christmas preparations are going well, both in activity and heart. πŸ™‚ Happy Friday!

It’s so hard to believe we’re into December already! Here are some highlights of the week:

1. Decorating for Christmas. It was a really enjoyable day all together. We found a new spot to get a tree (our previous place closed down, and getting a tree at Home Depot last year just wasn’t the same). Having a little helper this year was great fun, too. πŸ™‚

2. Turkey Bone Soup. One of my favorite leftover turkey dishes.

3. Not having rain and cold on the same days. πŸ™‚ The beginning of the week was rainy and overcast, but temperatures were in the 50s. By the time we got down into the 30s later in the week, the rain had gone. If the situation had been reversed – we would have had a mess of icy and/or slushy roads. I’m sure we will at some point this winter, but I am glad we escaped it this week.

4. Online shopping. It was good to knock out the greater part of Christmas shopping at home all in one morning.

5. A turn for the better. My younger two sons both work in customer service in the same online company. Of course, Black Friday and Cyber Monday generated a lot of business, which they were expecting, but some problems in their system caused trouble for both them and their customers. Jesse came home Wednesday night quite discouraged – no matter how much he worked, the number of tickets they needed to answer kept rising by the hundreds. But a server upgrade Thursday plus the end of their extended Cyber Monday sales has made catching up look possible again, and he was in a much better frame of mind yesterday.

Happy Friday! Hope you have a great week ahead.

Hope those of you in the US had a good Thanksgiving Day. Here are a few highlights of the week:

1.Β  The Galkin Evangelistic Team made our church their last stop of their fall term, and we enjoyed a feast from the Word in both music and message.

2. Central heating. We’ve had temperatures in the 20s this week – so nice to have a warm home.

3. Throw blankets. I don’t know how they make them just right, but they are perfect for cool evenings on the couch while reading or watching TV.

4. Thanksgiving. Ours was a little different this year: this was the first time our oldest son wasn’t here for it. I’ve been trying hard not to be emotional about it and to look on the good points, that he came in the spring for Timothy’s birthday and will be here at Christmas. And we did get to Face Time. Jason and Jesse both have to work Friday – we’re used to all of us having the whole weekend off. But we still have much to be thankful for: that Jason’s family was all well enough to come, after having been sick earlier in the week, that we had a great Thanksgiving feast and time with family, among multitudes of other things.

5. Silicon kitchen helpers. I had gotten these for presents earlier this year but hadn’t had an opportunity to use them yet until Thanksgiving.

IMG_1417

The left one is a pie guard, to put around the edges of a pie so they don’t get over-cooked. It worked well – smelled a little funny, but that didn’t affect the taste of the pie, and I am hoping the smell goes away after using it more. It has little notches on one end and slots on the other so you can adjust it to the size needed, and it’s easy to hook on. I always hate wrestling with foil strips and then trying to get them to stay in place, so this was nice. The other you put over a pan of whatever you have boiling and it keeps it from boiling over. That always happens when I am boiling potatoes for mashing: no matter how closely I watch them, as soon as my head is turned, they boil over. This did work really well. There was still a teeny bit of liquid that spilled over, but not nearly as much as usual.

No Black Friday shopping for us – for me, anyway. I’d rather shop weekdays when it’s not so crowded. πŸ™‚ We’re going to work on Christmas decorations this weekend. It doesn’t feel at all like it should be December yet, but maybe this will help. πŸ™‚ Happy Friday!

Here are a few highlights of the week:

1. Sunshine! It’s been overcast much of the week, so seeing sunshine later in the week was a real boost.

2. Time with Timothy. His parents had an event to go to, so we enjoyed an evening with him.

IMG_1413

Jason and Mittu got him his own little coffee cup, and when they drink coffee, he likes to pretend to drink his own and then “clink” cups with them, so here he’s sharing a cup with Granddad. πŸ™‚

3. A restful Saturday. I know why God gives babies to younger women! πŸ™‚ I was pretty well wiped out after baby-sitting Timothy for 5 hours. Thankfully there was not much that just had to be done on Saturday. I don’t often just sit down with a book in the middle of the day, but I did then. I was actually hoping to drift off to sleep and kept being awakened just as I was doing so, but it was still a nice rest day.

4. Another baby shower and fun night out with the ladies.

5. Organizing my Pinterest Food board. I was searching it for Crockpot meals, but it was so unwieldy it was hard to find anything. Originally I was going to separate out just the crockpot meals into a separate board, but I ended up doing the same for breads and side dishes. I already had separate boards for sweets, appetizers, low calorie/healthy foods, and gluten-free dishes (for my d-i-l and a few folks at church). I also deleted some duplicates and “Why did I ever pin that?” entries. Though I hated to spend the time on it, I think it will be more usable in the future.

Somehow it just hit me Wednesday that Thanksgiving is next week!. I knew it was coming, but I lost a week in there somewhere. I guess I better go turkey shopping! Happy Friday!

It’s Friday, time to look back over the blessings of the week with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story and other friends.

Here are a few highlights of the week:

1. Mexican food take-out. Love chicken chimichangas and chips and cheese dip!

2. Running into an old friend in the grocery store parking lot and catching up for a few minutes.

3. Pizza from a local business. Jesse and I love pizza from a local non-chain restaurant, but my husband isn’t fond of it. He had to be out for dinner one night this week, and though I don’t like that, it was an opportunity to get pizza from this place.

4. Single serving soup. Jesse and I were just discussing how we wished that the Bear Creek soup mixes (we LOVE the cheddar potato) came in smaller versions. The one we usually use makes more than enough for dinner one night and a couple of lunches later in the week, but sometimes you only want one or two servings. Then when I went to the store I saw just that! I haven’t tried it yet but I am optimistic it will be as good as what we’ve been having.

5. Safety. I pass through one particular intersection in front of W-Mart at least once a week: it has no traffic light and I have to turn left across several lanes of traffic, but I am usually careful to look both ways before pulling out. But one day last week somehow I missed seeing a car in the lane I was entering and didn’t realize it until he swerved, honking, around me. For some reason then he just stopped in front of me straddling the line dividing two lanes. We hadn’t hit, so I tried to pull past him, and then he pulled out in front of me, wagging his finger at me. I was behind him for several blocks, and whenever we were stopped, he’d look back at me in his rear-view mirror and make angry gestures pointing to his head, indicating he thought I was crazy, speaking constantly and animatedly (which I am glad I could not hear). I was relieved when we finally went in different directions. I wished I could have apologized, but on the other hand I was glad I didn’t have to actually speak to the guy. I wanted to say, “Look, I’m sorry. It was stupid of me – I don’t know how I missed seeing you. But everyone is okay and there was no harm done, so can we move on now?” And that was a reminder to me as well that when I am steamed over another driver’s actions, to just let it go and move on instead of rehearsing it and stewing over it way too long. So I am thankful for safety both from my dumb mistake and from road rage.

Hope you have a great weekend!

It’s Friday, time to look back over the blessings of the week with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story and other friends.

This has been a week where it hasn’t been hard at all to find favorite highlights to share. Here are a few:

1. Pumpkin carving night with the family. Here’s the fruit of our labors:

Pumpkins 2015
Timothy painted his with bath soap paints. πŸ™‚

2. Apple cider in the crockpot and my annual homemade caramel corn to go along with the above festivities.

IMG_1396
3. Baked potatoes like Red Lobster’s
using this recipe. Love those things and was happy to finally find a recipe for them.

4. A week of “finallys” – finally getting to some things that have been on my agenda for weeks, like getting a haircut, getting the rest of my fall decorations out, weeding some clothes out of my closet that I no longer wear, getting out and washing some winter clothes so they’re ready to wear, and cleaning out the inside of my car. Feels good to finally have those done.

5. This message on what the Bible calls our “flesh from a former pastor. I have heard him speak on this before in more detail, but it was nice to have the “condensed version” here. Very helpful.

How could I have forgotten to add getting back that hour of sleep last weekend? I don’t like the early evening darkness afterward, but I love that extra hour.

Happy Friday!

It’s Friday, time to look back over the blessings of the week with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story and other friends.

This week had a share of frustrations, but those are the weeks when it’s especially helpful to stop and count the blessings. Here are some of the best parts:

1. Timothy walking. He’s been on the verge of it for some time, but suddenly this week he just took off.

2. A bridal shower. Always fun, and this one came at a time when I really needed to get out of the house for a bit and enjoy being with some other ladies.

3. Fall color has finally come more fully this week. I’m afraid the rain we’ve had this week has knocked leaves off a little earlier than usual, but there’s still a lot of autumn color around to enjoy.

4. Oven meals. I usually wait til it’s a little cooler to make meals that take an hour or so in the oven (I don’t dare in the summer – the AC would never catch up), but decided it was cool enough this week. It’s nice to pull some recipes out of the repertoire that we haven’t had in a while.

5. Impromptu potluck. Jason and Mittu needed something they had left over here, and offered to bring the dinner they had in a crockpot to share. I already had dinner in the oven, but we decided to pool our resources and enjoy each other’s food. πŸ™‚

Have a great weekend! Don’t forget to turn your clocks back Saturday night!

It’s been one of those weeks that didn’t go quite like I had planned, but it wasn’t a bad week. Here are some of its best parts:

1. A good baby-sitting experience. Sometimes for our little grandson, only mommy or daddy will do, so I was hoping that when they asked us to watch him Friday night so they could go on a much-needed date that everything would go well. It did! He is at such a fun age.

2. A quick fix. I was just about over the edge with frustration with my mouse one day when my son came in and suggested the problem might be with the connection. It’s a wireless mouse with an adapter on a cable of a USB port. The cable was hanging off the back of the computer with the computer actually on top of the adapter somehow. He pulled it back up on top of the computer, and everything worked great. And now I know what to check for if it happens again. πŸ™‚

3. An illness averted. One day I was feeling draggy and run-down, even after a nap, and the next day I had some pretty strong stomach issues, but now everything seems fine. I am glad that was all and not the start of some kind of worse bug.

4. Heat. When it was 66 degrees inside and 39 outside one day, I decided it wasΒ finally time to turn the furnace on. I think I might say this every winter, but I am so thankful for easily adaptable heat at the push of a button.

5. A husband at home. Jim has had to travel a little more than usual the last few weeks, and it was nice to have him home all this week.

I didn’t get much of my to-do list done this week, so this Saturday might be a catch-up day. Have a good weekend!

Friday’s Fave Five

FFF tamara'sIt’s Friday, time to look back over the blessings of the week with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story and other friends.

It’s been down into the 50s at night and downright nippy a few mornings, and the day time has been quite pleasant and sunny. Here are some fave moments of the last week:

1 A family outing. We hadn’t had one since August, and I was feeling a little cooped up with Jim having been away a little more than usual lately, so I suggested we go visit the Mast General Store downtown and then eat lunch at a little sandwich and gelato shop nearby on Saturday. I had never been to either before and I enjoyed reading some of the history of Mast on the way. It was a fun morning.

2. A new dish towel from the store we visited. I didn’t get it just for the birds, though I like them, but mainly because it is hard to find “fluffy” dish towels any more.

IMG_1376

3. A zucchini cookie at the aforementioned shop. I’d had zucchini bread and zucchini cake before, but not a cookie. This was excellent.

4. A football game is not something I had thought I would ever have on any kind of favorite list, but we’ve watched a couple of UT Vols games lately. The first one was their game against Oklahoma, which is where Mittu is from, so she was rooting for the Sooners. πŸ™‚ UT started out well ahead in that game and then lost. We ended up watching last Saturday’s game as well, which they won. I googled a couple of basic things during the game, like “What is a first down” and a “first and ten.” Such was my ignorance. πŸ™‚ But it did help to know those things! Who knows, I may become a fan yet.

5. A few hours with no interruption has gotten to be almost a rarity these days, but I had one such glorious afternoon this week and was able to get several posts ahead on my 31 Days With Elisabeth Elliot series for Write31 Days.

Happy Friday!

Friday’s Fave Five

FFF tamara'sIt’s Friday, time to look back over the blessings of the week with Susanne at Living to Tell the Story and other friends.

Here are some highlights of the past week or so:

1. Sunny days after nearly a week of rainy ones.

2. Cracker Barrel take out. I love their sampler platter, with smaller portions of meat loaf, chicken and dumplings, and ham. The first two are my favorite entrees there, so it is nice to get a bit of both. And, of course, a slice of Coca Cola cake nicely rounds it off. πŸ™‚

3. Winning two books, one from Susan Braun which I forgot to mention a couple of weeks ago, and one from author Deborah Raney’s Facebook page. I haven’t read any of Deborah’s books yet, so I am excited to have one in hand.

4. Grace. I think we all have people whose personalities just rub us the wrong way. After one encounter with such a person (one of Great-Grandma’s new hospice people) on the phone where I came off as somewhat harsh, I was really praying that I would respond better when she actually came to the house, and, God helping me, we ended up having a nice visit.

5. Safe travels and wellness. Jim had to go out of town again this week, driving this time, and made it there and back safely, and Jason and Timothy had a stomach bug which seems to be pretty much over now. Hopefully it won’t spread to anyone else – it hasn’t seemed to so far.

Happy Friday!
