First Friday’s Fave Five of 2010!

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details, and you can visit Susanne to see the list of others’ favorites or to join in.

Since it has been two weeks since we’ve done a Fave Five, I hope it’s ok to go back two weeks!

1. Celebrating our 30th anniversary with a trip to Charleston and our kids surprising us with a little celebration when we came home.

2. All involved with Christmas. It was a nice, quiet, restful day with all the immediate family here. My favorite present: a cedar chest from my husband:

Photobucket

When I was growing up it was common for women to gave these at the foot of their beds to store keepsakes. I always wanted one but never mentioned it because we never had the space for one. But moving the sewing desk out of our bedroom into the new sewing room created space! I can’t wait to go through some things to put in here.

3. Finally making Harvest Loaf Cake yesterday! I usually make it earlier in December, but we love it any time.

4. Fireworks on New Year’s Eve!! I love fireworks anyway, and I grew up having them, but we haven’t been able to have them at home in the last ten years or so because our city doesn’t allow them. But my son and new daughter-in-law live outside the city limits! So we went to their house for New Year’s Eve and brought some fireworks.

It’s funny, it wasn’t raining at the time, or even misting, though it had done both earlier in the day, yet my camera was picking up the water droplets in the air. This is one of about five “big ones” we shot off.

Some little tanks that sent off sparkler-type fireworks.

5. A couple of get-togethers at Jason and Mittu’s house with another family from church whose daughters, one a teacher in CA and one a student in FL, both of whom worked with Jason and Mittu at camp, were visiting. Good food and fellowship and fun playing games. We don’t do that as often as we should.

My favorite clue from Taboo (a game where you’re trying to get your teammates to guess what you’re describing, but you’re not allowed to say certain key words in the clues you give them) was when Jim gave the clue, “Six minus 1 small things that come out of ladies.” All of us on his team thought, “What??!!” Then it hit a couple of us that the answer was “quintuplets.” We laughed about that the rest of the night.

Then at midnight Jason was chasing Mittu to get a New Year’s kiss, and this family’s six-year-old son asked, “Can I play kissing tag?” 🙂

I hope your New Year is off to a good start, and I wish you all the best in 2010!

Last Random Dozen of 2009

Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee created and host a weekly Random Dozen set of questions for participants to consider. It’s fun to read different people’s answers.

1. Do you find it gross to share drinks with family? Friends?

Yes, definitely.

2. What have you learned this year? (You didn’t see a question of that weight coming, did you? At least not for #2.)

Well, I am sure there have been many things, but at the time of evening I am writing this, with a fried brain, I’m not coming up with anything. If something comes to mind before I push the “Publish” button, I’ll share it.

3. When do you dismantle the Christmas decorations?

Pretty much just whenever we can get to it — we don’t have a certain traditional time, but it is probably the last weekend before everyone goes back to work and school.

4. Something you wish to accomplish before the end of 2009 is:

The monthly ladies’ booklet I’ve been working on this week. 😀 There would be a whole list of things I wish I’d gotten done, but I’ll just roll them over to next year’s list…

5. How do you feel about winter (after Christmas)?

That’s the hardest time of the year for me. All the festivities and brightness of Christmas is over (though, yes, we carry it in our hearts), it’s cold and dark, the landscape is almost colorless. One thing that keeps me hanging on is the thought that, after Dec. 21, we turn the corner and the days start imperceptibly getting longer, so I know we’ll see more daylight as time goes by. Then I love Valentine’s Day, so there’s that to look forward to, and then in March we start to see the first blooms of spring. So I keep busy and keep looking ahead.

6. Have you participated in after-Christmas sales?

I don’t usually. I went to one store the day after Christmas and was reminded why. Too crowded. I’ll scout around a little days afterward, when yes, I know there’s not much selection left, but occasionally I’ll find something.

7. Do you have plans for New Year’s Eve?

Normally we just laze around the house flipping through the different celebrations on TV, but this year my son and new daughter-in-law live outside the city limits where they can legally have fireworks! So we’re having a little get-together there.

8. Is there anything special awaiting you in January?

Mmmm, not that I know of, besides hopefully getting some things crossed off that rolled-over list (see #4) and revival meetings at our church.

9. If your life this year was a movie, what category or genre would it be? (Romance, Comedy, Drama, Thriller, Suspense, Farcical, etc.)

Documentary? Family Drama? Reality show? I don’t know. We had a college graduation, a wedding, and a 30th anniversary this year – other than that it was just everyday life.

10. How much time per day do you spend blogging? Please do not lie. I will know.

Actually writing blog posts? Anywhere from just a few minutes to several days (not 24-hour days, but some posts, like my blog year in review, were written in pieces over the course of several days). Reading blogs? Well, that’s another question….

11. Who runs your household?

My husband is the head of the household and does most of the big projects and smaller fix-it jobs, pays bills, etc.; I do the everyday cleaning, meal prep, shopping, etc.

12. Share one hope/dream for 2010.

I’ve been praying along the lines of Col. 1:9-12 for my immediate family, and praying that at least one of my extended family members (preferably all) would be saved this year.

Friday’s Fave Five

So here are five of my favorite things from this past week:

1. Getting the Christmas decorating done last weekend. Though it took us a while to find a time when everyone was off at the same time, I am glad that we still do it all together — even the married son and daughter-in-law! I know it will not always be that way, so I am enjoying it while I can.

2. Our church’s ladies’ Christmas party. It’s always a lot of fun, plus we get to see who our “Secret Sister” was for the past year. Mine was a complete surprise — I had thought for sure it was someone else. But the one I gave to figured me out. It was my good friend Carol whom I have mentioned before. Near the beginning of the year I had the wrong date in my head for her birthday — even though we have information cards with these things written down — and I got both her present from me and her Secret Sister to her a couple of weeks late. She figured out that wasn’t a coincidence. 🙂 But she was very gracious about it.

3. Winning books! I won one from Carrie and one from Linda.

4. Getting most of my Christmas shopping done Thursday. We had done a good bit online, which I prefer, but for some things you have to go to actual stores. And I do like that somewhat when it goes well. I was hoping to get it mostly done in one day anyway, but I was especially driven because for a while they were forecasting snow for Friday, and here many places close up when it snows. They changed the forecast later on, but I was glad I pushed through. Almost everyone was fairly friendly and cheerful, and I found some good things at good prices.

5. This decoration which I got on a clearance table after Christmas last year.

I don’t know if you can quite see the 3-D effect of the carolers and decorations on the front and the way the outline of it extends out. I had it on an end table in the family room, but it just got lost there. I put it on the windowsill above the sink in the kitchen, and now I enjoy it several times a day.

Bonus:

I get an e-mail newsletter from Leisure Arts, and the most recent one had instructions for a really cute Christmas tree package that they used as a favor to give pieces of fudge, but it could be used for any small gift. I haven’t tried it yet, but it is sooo cute.

Have a “merry and bright” Friday!

Random Dozen Meme

The Random Dozen meme is created and hosted by Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee. She has a Mr. Linky set up if you’d like to see others’ responses or join in.

1. Gingerbread: For or against? Discuss.

I don’t care for crisp gingersnaps, but I make a gingerbread teddy bear cookie that’s soft, puffy, and chewy that I like, but otherwise it’s not my favorite flavor. Not my least favorite, either. If it is dessert at someone’s house I’d probably have some, but I don’t crave or seek it out.

2. Is it important to you to always stay (live) close to family?

That would be my preference, but if God wants to send one of my kids half-way around the world, I trust that He would give me the grace to handle it — and I would need a lot of grace!

3. Which holiday pretend character do you wish really existed?

I can’t think of any at the moment. They’re fine safely tucked in the land of make-believe.

4. Which holiday movie best represents how you feel about Christmas or life?

Charlie Brown Christmas.

5. Is there a particular Christmas song that you’re enjoying now? Any that you’re tired of?

I’m getting pretty tired of “Sleigh Ride.” It seems like I’ve heard it too many times already.

I’ve been listening a lot to the King of Glory CD and a “generic” Irish-sounding instrumental Christmas CD.

6. What is your favorite way to remember those less fortunate at Christmastime?

Anonymously.

7. Does it upset you to see “Xmas” instead of Christmas? How about “Happy Holidays” etc., instead of “Merry Christmas?”

Yes, I don’t like seeing Christ’s name replaced with an “X” though I have heard an explanation that it is actually supposed to represent Christ. And I just posted about the Happy Holidays thing — I do believe in saying “Merry Christmas” because it is Christ’s birthday, but I don’t believe everyone who says “Happy Holidays” is a heathen or deserving of disdain.

8. How many Christmas programs are you attending this month?

Like performances, you mean? Two, I think. The children’s program at church a couple of Sundays ago and then our adult Christmas cantata is this Sunday. We usually have a school program and piano recital, but we don’t have any kids taking piano or choir this year.

9. Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Any chance of that dream becoming a reality?

It’s not likely here in SC. We only get snow once or twice a year, usually in Jan. or Feb.

10. Tell me about a Christmas present you received as a child. Pics are always nice.

The only thing I can remember is Barbie dolls, which I especially liked because my nickname was Barbie.

11. How many Christmas parties are you attending this month?

Two, our Sunday School party last Saturday and our church ladies’ party last Monday.

12. How do you keep yourself centered on the significance of Christmas?

Prayer, and I think the church-related programs help. This year I am also reading Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, a collection of 22 reading from authors as varied as Spurgeon, Whitefield, and Augustine to John MacArthur. Edited to add: A few other people mentioned Christmas carols and hymns, and those are a great blessing to me as well.

So here are five of my favorite things from this past week:

1. Going to a craft show last weekend in the town where I used to live. The show was not nearly as big as it used to be, and they included a lot of commercial vendors (had at least two booths for teeth whitening, with people having it done right there!?! OK, I guess, though I hate to pay the entrance fee for that kind of thing when I am wanting to see crafts). It was interesting to reflect on how crafting has changed over the years.

2. Going to said craft show with my daughter-in-law. It’s nice to have someone to do girl things with. 🙂

3. Getting a couple of cute things there which unfortunately I can’t show you because neither WordPress nor Flickr are uploading my photos today. 😦 It gets partway done and then stops. If I can get them up I will show them later. (Updated: I finally tried Photobucket: itworked, though the images are smaller than I prefer.) But one was a little 8″ or so tree all decorated in pink and silver. The other was a pair of 8″ or so stockings that looked like they’d been made out of quilt scraps.

Photobucket

4. “The Biggest Loser” season finale. I had been rooting for Danny the last few weeks: he worked hard, played a clean game, and there were never any negative interactions with his contestants, at least that we saw. I wish him and his family the best! We also enjoyed the series finale of “Monk.” That’s not a program we watched regularly, but we enjoyed it when we did catch it, and the ending was sad in places but sweet overall. I’m glad he finally found out what happened to his wife.

5. Double Delicious Cookie Bars, which could also be called the Easiest Bar Cookies to Make, Ever. (And yes, the irony of listing these after “The Biggest Loser” is not lost on me…) I did have a photo of them, too, which is not uploading.

Photobucket

Double Delicious Cookie Bars

(Note: These contain peanut butter chips, but they can be omitted and additional chocolate chips used instead if you’re taking this somewhere where someone might have peanut allergies)

1/2 c. margarine or butter
1 1/2 c. graham cracker crumbs
1 14-oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1 12-oz. pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 c. peanut butter chips
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 tsp. shortening (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 (325 for glass dish). In a 9 x 13-inch pan, melt margarine in oven. Sprinkle crumbs evenly over margarine. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumbs. Top with 12-ounce packages chocolate chips and peanut butter chips; press down firmly. Bake 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned. Melt 1 cup chocolate chips and shortening; drizzle over bars. Cut into bars when cool. Store loosely covered at room temperature.

I’ve also used red and green M&Ms for this for quick Christmas cookies for school or some function where I am supposed to bring something, but the candy coating does melt off a good bit. I wonder if the M&Ms could be added just after taking it out of the oven. I’ll have to try that next time.

Happy Friday!

Wednesday Random Dozen Meme

The Random Dozen meme is created and hosted by Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee. She has a Mr. Linky set up if you’d like to see others’ responses or join in.

1. Which physical trait do you now accept–maybe not love, but accept–and no longer feel extremely self-conscious about?

My nose. It’s probably my least favorite feature.

2. This week Meredith Baxter Birney, best known as the mom on the favorite 80s sitcom “Family Ties” came out of the closet, which led me to formulate this question: Who do you think is/was the best TV mom?

My favorite was Carolyn Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie. Patient, kind, thrifty, industrious, creative, sweet — all the things I wish I were!

3. Do you speak any foreign languages? Are there any you’d like to learn?

No and no. I had Spanish for years, both elementary and high school, but only catch a few words here and there  when I hear it and can’t really speak it at all except a few isolated words. There are a number of things I’d like to learn, but languages aren’t really on the list.

4. Who is your personal hero?

Jim Lubin, who is paralyzed from the neck down due to transverse myelitis, is ventilator-dependent, yet created the Transverse Myelitis Internet Club, which was a tremendous support to me, a similar subscriber list for vent-dependent quads, and an abundance of web sites for the disabled, besides having one of the most even-tempered and sunny personalities that I know of. I get so angry when I see any program on TV that seems to indicate life is over the the plug should be pulled when someone is put on a ventilator. I’m sure it is not the life anyone would choose, but people can have a productive and good life even on a vent.

5. What is one holiday food that you find extremely difficult to resist over- indulging in?

Just one? Ho, ho ho, that’s a good one. But I’d probably say Harvest Loaf Cake, which, though it has a fallish name, we make in December. Haven’t yet this year, but I am hoping to this week. It is hard to keep my hands off of it, though — I am tempted to cut a “little sliver” almost every time I go through the kitchen.

6. Tell me about a Christmas decoration that has special meaning or sentimental value.

Oh, many of them do. When my older sons were in elementary school, moms got together to make ornaments for the kids to take home at the class Christmas party, so many of those are special. A couple of things my mom gave me are special not only because I like them but because she passed away in December a few years ago:

Christmas decoration from my mom

This plays through several songs when you push a button on the back, and the lights in the church flash.

This is one of my most special treasures, also from my mom. I collect Boyd’s Bear figurines, and somewhere she found this Christmas tree with little miniature scenes all though it.

Boyd's tree house

I talked about these last year in a post titled The Island of Misfit Ornaments — our odd or offbeat ones:

These were little wax candle ornaments that we got our first Christmas together.

Melted ornaments

The brown-haired boy represented Jim, and the blond girl represented me. But one year they got a little melted up in the attic. I couldn’t even get them out of the plastic bags because they were stuck. I don’t know why I haven’t thrown them away — I guess because of the sentimental value. I do keep all candles out of the attic now!

7. How do you feel about snow?

I like that here in SC we only get it once or twice a year, and it is enough to close schools and some businesses for a day (because we don’t have all the equipment that states have who get snow all the time — it would be too expensive for just once a year use). It’s like an unexpected day off when we get it. Within that context I think it is pretty and fun. I don’t think I’d like living where we had a lot of snow all through the winter. I don’t like to be that cold; I’d be nervous about driving; and I have balance issues, so it’s nerve-wracking for me to even walk in it.

8. On average, how many hours of sleep do you get each night? Not that I’m jealous of any number over three or anything.

About 5, which is why I often take a nap.

9. Tell me about your first crush.

My parents used to tell me I had a crush on my cousin when I was two. I don’t remember that, but, unfortunately, I went through most of my childhood with a crush on somebody. That’s not really a healthy way to live. The first crush I remember was in fourth grade on a guy named George. He had a really unusual name which I am not going to put here both for his privacy’s sake and mine — I would be embarrassed to death if he ever Googled himself and found his name here. Unfortunately a lot of girls had crushes on him, and he was totally uninterested in girls at the time. One of the great mysteries of my life was that he whispered something to me one day, but I didn’t understand what he said, and I was too shy to ask. I fantasized that it was something like, “You’re cute” or “I like you.” But it was probably more something like, “Can I borrow a pencil?”

10. You’re stuck in a room for 2 hours with only a chalkboard and chalk. What will you write/draw?

Chalk is not my favorite writing instrument, but I’d probably write rather than draw. I’m not sure what I’d write, though — it would depend on my mood at the time. If I was with someone else we’d probably play tic tac toe or that “connect the dots to make squares” game.

11. Do you dress for the current temp or for the day’s forecast?

I dress for the current temp with the forecast in mind. I love long-sleeved knit tops in the winter time so I can push the sleeves up or down according to the changing temps. I am often hotter than others, so I dress lighter but keep a sweater handy this time of year.

12. Favorite Christmas movie is?

White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.

Friday’s Fave Five

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details, and you can visit Susanne to see the list of others’ favorites or to join in.

So here are five of my favorite things from this past week:

1. Eating out at one of our favorite Mexican food places last weekend. I love the chicken chimichangas at that particular place. I’ve thought about trying to learn to make them…but they do such a great job, I will just enjoy theirs.

2. Jesse’s first JV basketball game of the season. It was nice because all of us were able to be there, even Grandma. And…well, let’s just say last year they didn’t win more than they did win…and they WON their first game this week!! We started out about 10 points behind, but then we got ahead, then it was neck and neck, and then we were ahead the last quarter. It was a pretty exciting game — and I am not normally much of a sports enthusiast! I love it when it’s not a complete slaughter one way or the other.

3. Our town’s annual “Dickens of a Christmas” celebration.

4. A handy husband who knew how to fix the leaky washer — had to replace the pump, which had a crack in it.

5. A sweet daughter-in-law who made meals a couple of days when I was under the weather.

Bonus:

These cute little bottle brush trees ordered from Reflections From the Stone Nest. I think the tallest one is maybe 6″. I’m afraid I am just going to have to leave you with a link to the photo of them on her site, because after spending way more time than I have this morning, I can’t get my photo of them to upload either here on WordPress or on Flickr. But they are cute!

Happy Friday!

Random Dozen

Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee is the creator and hostess of the  Wednesday Random Dozen.

1. Which Wizard of Oz character are you most like?

The Cowardly Lion

2. When you’re deciding what you’re going to wear each morning, which item do you select first? Why?

I usually wear dresses or jumpers, so that’s about the ony thing to decide on: which one?

3. What kind of animal do you think the world could live without?

Skunks

4. How many Christmas trees are in your home?

I don’t have any up yet, but we usually have the main big one in the living room. I don’t know if these count, but I also have a little 2-ft. or so one and a tiny 6 or 8 inch one.

5. Would you prefer to be emotionless if it mean you didn’t have to feel a heartbreak?

No. I like emotion. But not too much of it.

6. Do you ever experience holiday let-down or depression?

Yes.

7. Do you like Michael Jackson’s music?

No, though I used to listen to the Jackson Five back in the day.

8. Why is it that we never judge people who have their teeth fixed for cosmetic reasons, but every other cosmetic procedure has a stigma?

I think the only cosmetic surgeries that have a real stigma are those involved in trying to look younger. Surgery with all its risks seems a drastic measure for that, and sometimes it can go woefully wrong.

9. Enjoy horseback riding?

No. I don’t like being bounced and jostled, and I am somewhat afraid of horses. When I was little my family all went riding and the horse my mom and I were on together took off running wild, and I still have that fear that a horse will do that and I won’t be able to rein it in, or it will throw me (yes, I’ve watched too much of America’s Funniest Videos) and step on me or hurt me.

10. Shoes–practical or stylish?

Preferably both, but practicality trumps stylishness. I have balance problems so have to wear flats.

It’s sad that so often it has to be one or the other. Why can’t practicality be stylish?!?

11. What was the name of your first pet? Feel free to post a pic.

I don’t remember the early ones, but the first one I remember was a collie named Sam.

12. What percentage of your Christmas shopping is done?

I personally haven’t done any yet, but for what my husband and I were planning on together, he has done about a third of it maybe? I’m not sure.

Friday’s Fave Five

FFF fall leaves 2

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts a “Friday Fave Five” in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Click on the button to read more of the details, and you can visit Susanne to see the list of others’ favorites or to join in.

1. Thanksgiving praise service. Our church moves its usual Wednesday night service to Tuesday night during Thanksgiving week since many travel Wednesday, and the majority of the service is given over to whoever wants to share a testimony. To me it is one of the highlights of the year.

2. Thanksgiving Day. Though we should be thankful year round, it is nice to have a time set aside specifically for that purpose. Plus I like that it is an untarnished holiday — no controversial origins, nothing bad associated with it, the time for family gatherings. I enjoyed the extended time with all the family.

3. Thanksgiving food. All the usual stuff, having a meal in the early afternoon so that one clean-up is over, I’m “off” the rest of the day. Then heating up leftovers or making a sandwich in the evening. Plus it was nice to share the cooking with a new daughter-in-law this year!

4. Thanksgiving Day naps!

5. Playing a few rounds of Apples to Apples Thanksgiving evening.

Bonus:

My son shared with me a fun site called Face Ahoy: it’s a collection of photos of faces that people “see” in everyday objects. Some are very cute, some are funny.

Bonus 2:

Magazine deals! Thanks to a post at Skip to My Lou, I saw that Amazon is selling subscriptions to several magazines for $5 between now and Dec. 1.

Earlybird Thanksgiving Random Dozen

Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee is hosting her usual Wednesday Random Dozen on Tuesday this week, since many will be making pies or traveling tomorrow.

1. Are you sticking to traditional Thanksgiving foods this year, or are you being culinarily adventurous?

All the usual very traditional Thanksgiving fare.

2. Tell me something concrete that you’re thankful for. (Something you can literally touch, see, etc., not a concept like “hope.”)

Music and the means to play it.
Heat at the touch of a button, especially after having been without it for two weeks.
Books.
Films.
Food.

3. You knew the flip side was coming: Share about something intangible that you’re thankful for.

Love, joy, peace, grace, forgiveness.

4. Share one vivid Thanksgiving memory. It doesn’t have to be deep or meaningful, just something that remains etched in your memory.

I think it was about 13 or 14 years ago we lived in GA and planned to come to SC to stay with friends, go to our old church and the Thanksgiving praise service the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, spend the night with them, and then drive to TN Thanksgiving morning to spend a couple of days with more good friends, my husband’s former pastor and his family. The first part of the trip went as planned with a great visit and a wonderful service. But pulling out of our friend’s driveway Thanksgiving morning, our car broke down. We had to have it towed in but had to leave it as no mechanics were working on the holiday. We rented a car and headed out to TN, stopped at a Burger King for our Thanksgiving lunch, drove over the mountains where Jesse got sick all over the rented car, and made it to our friends’ house in time for leftovers that evening. The rest of the visit was very nice: then we had to deal with the car issue afterward.

5. What is one thing that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt is going to happen this Thanksgiving because it always does, year after year?

Oh, just all the usual stuff — cooking, eating, napping, more eating. Sometimes we watch a movie or play a game in the evening.

6. Do your pets get any left-overs?

Yes, my husband, thankfully, takes on the job of getting everything off the bird that he can, and he saves a bit for our dog.

7. Does your family pray before the big meal? If so, do you join hands while seated, stand, repeat a formal prayer or offer a spontaneous prayer? Who does the praying?

My husband either prays spontaneously or asks one of the boys to while we’re seated around the table.

8. Will you be watching football in the afternoon? If not, what will you be doing?

No football. My husband and I will be napping at some point, I am sure.

9. There are two distinct camps of people on this issue: How do you feel about oysters in the dressing/stuffing?

Bleah, I am not an oyster fan.

10. Do you consider yourself informed about the first Thanksgiving?

Yes.

11. Which variety of pie will you be enjoying?

Apple and pumpkin.

12. Do you feel for the turkey?? (This is a humorous throw back question related to the 12th question in another Random Dozen!

Not really. I enjoy every bite. 🙂

Check over at Linda‘s to find more participants or to join in yourself.
